‪What a find !
Having decided to cut short our walk ( New Donalds, Donald Tops), as DIY was calling , we were surprised to find so many cars parked in the tiny square in Durisdeer.
We decided to venture in , the place was packed.
We shared a table with some locals and had a lovely blether.
What a terrific spread , way too much home baked ( actually home baked, not mass produced), if only I had the large appetite of my former and younger self ;-)).
Recommend this venue , the Womens Guild 'do' afternoon tea for a few Sundays in the year.
All money is for charitable causes.

‪Marvellous information about my ancestors on headstones in this beautiful churchyard. It was worth travelling 20,000 km to visit.‬

‪Situated 6 miles north of Thornhill and 1 mile east of the A702, Durisdeer really is pretty as a picture as you approach the hamlet whose houses seems to huddle together beneath the steep hills just behind them. The first thing you notice is the tall tower of a church that seems much too large for such a small community.

Parking in the sleepy heart of the village you enter a churchyard that is truly idyllic, with the high hills and a deep glen in the background and tall trees and a bubbling stream just beyond the wall. It isn’t known when the original Durisdeer church was built, but the present one dates from 1699, was repaired in 1776 and renovated in the mid-19th Century.
The cemetery is well worth a slow exploration and again I was surprised at the number of rather grand headstones and monuments for such a small village. Of particular historical note is a tombstone, standing alongside the south wall of the church, which marks the grave of Daniel McMichael, a Covenanter who was shot at Dalveen in 1685.

Initially I was disappointed to find the church door locked but followed the directions on a sign re the Queensberry Marbles. Opening the door to view said marbles I was astounded to find a very large, ornate and beautiful marble monument and further research revealed this to be the memorial topping of a vault containing the burial vault of the 1st Duke of Queensberry as well as other family coffins. This is also the resting place of several distinguished members of the historically famous and important Douglas clan. Perhaps as I was brought up in the village of Douglas this meant more to me than most, but I can't imagine that anyone else could fail to be impressed and moved by such a wonderful memorial in such peaceful and idyllic surroundings.‬
