Nice easy trail. It was interesting to see how much the earthquake caused the ground and fence to move.

My husband and visited the Earthquake Trail on a recent trip down the West Coast. We had previously been in the area but had missed this. Truthfully, we didn't miss too much. This is a boring and easy paved trail. There isn't much to it but it was really amazing to stand on the actual San Andreas fault and to observe the area where it tore apart a fence. I wouldn't go out of my way for this but it's a cool thing to see if you're in the area!

Short trail to the San Andreas fault line that shifted a fence-line 16 feet during the 1906 San Francisco earth quake. Fascinating to see the fence itself and imagine the forces necessary to move Point Reyes nearly 20 feet from the mainland. Educational signs are posted along the trail as the birthplace of seismology.

The Earthquake Trail is at the Bear Valley Visitor Center where there is the largest parking lot in the park. The trail to see the San Andreas earthquake fault is an easy paved trail that is a loop and easily accessible for everybody.
The visitor center was closed because of Covid but the bathrooms were open.
There are blue posts that mark where the exact San Andreas Fault is located and a fence which was moved 16 feet during the 1906 earthquake. It is quite spectacular to actually stand on the exact San Andreas Fault and to see the movement of where the fence split during the 1906 quake.
All along the trail there are many placard signs many of which are written specifically for kids. This is a great place to teach your kids about earthquakes and geology.

This area has some of the most important geology in the world. This is where the San Andreas fault lurched 20 ft to the North in 1906.

Earthquake Trail is an easy, level six-tenths of a mile, half-hour loop with Interpretive signs about the San Andreas Fault Zone, which it traverses, which infamously shook San Francisco in 1906. The Trail starts from the Bear Valley Visitor Center parking lot; picnic tables (subject to COVID-19 restrictions) and restrooms with sinks and flush toilets at the parking lot. No earthquakes near this trail for over 100 years!
It's common to see deer in the meadow from this trail.

This was actually a bucket list item for me. To see the fence that was split by the 1906 earthquake. The signage is designed for kids so as an adult you may want more. But still, 100% worth the visit.

The Visitor Center was great and very informative. There is a lot of great hiking---easy to more advanced. Nice picnic area and the actual "Earthquake Trail" is very manageable and informative. Ended up to be a very fun day with family!

This is a nice, easy hike starting at the Bear Valley Visitor Center. It wanders through the trees and demonstrates nature's power with evidence of the ground shifting earthquake. Stop at the visitor's center to talk with one of the many helpful rangers. Plenty of parking and a good jumping off point for other trails into the interior.

Depending upon your fitness and interest levels, this is a 15-30 minute, self-guided tour. Parking is available at the adjacent, Visitor’s Center. Feel free to charge your car, if necessary. Restrooms are nearby. Interpretive signs dot the trail and inform the visitor. Rangers are available inside of the Visitor’s Center to answer your questions and provide a basic map. Overall, this is a seismically significant walk.
