‪Lovely canal that is still in use. Wide towpath so very pleasant for walking or cycling, there is car access to some of it just outside Ilkeston so be careful.Lots of wildlife to enjoy.‬

‪Erewash canal is a lovely place to walk along, plenty of room for walkers, cyclists and runners to easily pass, today was an opportunity to visit the sandiacre lock cottages which is typically open one day a month and well worth a visit‬

‪Jenny and I have just cycled the Erewash Valley Trail again - my third time over the past few years. It's a delightful route and well-signed all the way, pretty level with only short ascents (e.g. as one of the Erewash canal rises via various locks on the way north) and almost exclusively off-road apart from some quiet back streets as you navigate around Beeston. We chose to ride it clockwise and to start at the northern end, up at Langley Mill Basin, but obviously you can start anywhere on the 30-mile round route. Our day's ride took us south via the route of the disused Nottingham Canal through a wide section of an open valley, then along quiet estate roads through to Chilwell, the Attenborough Nature Reserve (crowded, this, especially at weekends), and then by the riverside to Trent Lock and the halfway point. From there the route turns north and we followed the Erewash Canal towpath - a delight and a great opportunity to see all the different ways householders with canal frontage have used it as part of their back gardens. Good surface nearly all the way north on the Erewash Canal section, but there are a lot of squeeze stiles and it's a popular route for walkers and cyclists etc so don't expect a fast ride. It's a lovely ride overall though and there are lots of pubs en route north, as well as a pub and ice creams at Trent Lock - and the Attenborough Reserve Visitor Centre does food too, though it's nearly always busy. Enjoy! - as we did :-)‬

‪Great place for walk to Trent Lock from Long Eaton, you've got 12 miles of canal that was finished in 1779 and its still fully navigable to craft.
Eat and drink at Trent Lock 😊‬

‪There are some beautiful walks along the canal and you can go as far as you want. Along the routes are some pubs which are okay for a drink or snack. ‬

‪We collected an 8-berth canal boat from the Peter Le Marchant Trust on the Saturday to cruise from Loughborough to Langley Mill along the canals and rivers. I took my wife who is wheelchair dependant, daughter, two grandchildren, one partner and great-grandchild. The boat is specifically modified to accommodate disabled users, complete with a hydraulic wheelchair lift. We set off having been given instruction and cruised along the river Soar heading towards the river Trent. Having crossed the river we entered the Erewash canal and went to the end at Langley Mill. The canal is very picturesque and as the water is so clear we saw many fish including pike up to a metre long. The trip was at a slow walking pace which gave us plenty of time to relax and take in the scenery. There are pubs along the way serving good food. The boat was well equipped and provided an ideal home for the week. The weather worked in our favour and we had 5 days of sunshine which made it a most pleasing experience. Even on a damp day you do not really notice it too much as you are busy navigating. This was an excellent canal to visit!‬

‪Stopping off enroute to the Peaks, we opted fore a walk through the Erewash valley alongside a disused section of canal footpath.
Met lots of local fishermen who were happy to chat.
Nice summers walk in the countryside.‬

‪As a youngster I spent many happy hours/days messing around the Erewash Canal with my friends. 50 plus years later it was quite a surpise to see how well the canal is doing with wildlife and the fascination of boats passing through the locks is still a sight to wonder at. Walked from Potters Lock to Green's Lock, pathway is easy walking, used by walkers, joggers and cyclists.‬

‪We have walked the full stretch of this canal in steady stages over the past few weeks and every time it’s been fascinating. We’ve met some very interesting people along the way whether fishing or travelling the canal in their narrow boats with a tale to tell. It’s full of history, heritage and nature .. we saw swans with 6 signets on the tow path .. a sight I’m sure we’ll never get so close to or have the privilege to see again. A large part of the canal is hidden behind people’s properties and industry and not obvious if driving nearby .. lots of hidden gems .. A thoroughly enjoyable walk, flat and easily accessible for everyone and a couple of dog friendly pubs on the way too. We’re very thankful for all the hard work that goes into keeping these canals alive for us all to enjoy. ‬

‪This place is full of wonderful remains of the heritage of working waterways and is very well worth a visit. The area is really well kept and there are a lot of very friendly folks among the boat owners and the boatyard there who will be happy to talk about the history of the place. You must have a look at the toll house and, if the opportunity is available the pumping house is amazing (although it is not always open) Take a trip down the canal as it is a really pretty canal for walking or cycling‬
