‪Der Tempel ist gut besucht und sehr intensiv geschmückt. Besonders schön war es, wirklich lebendiges Tempelleben zu sehen.‬

‪This is one of the oldest Temples in Taiwan, first established in 1591. Restored in 1874 but most of the current renovations are from 1936 and the building has a real sense of history to it with its aged wood carvings. The main hall is dedicated to Mazu considered to be the most revered deity in Taiwan and regarded as the goddess of the sea and protector of sailors and fishermen. The statue is said to be one brought from mainland China when settlers came across in 1683. The temple was a hive of activity and very atmospheric.‬

‪This is one of the National heritages in Lukang. Tianhou means “Heavenly Queen” in Chinese. This temple worships Heavenly Queen~ Mazu. Mazu is a Sea Goddess worship in the southeast coast of China, Taiwan, Ryukyu, Japan and Southeast Asia.

There were six original Mazus statures in Meizhou, Putisn, Fujian Province (福建莆田湄洲), the home town of Mazu. The only one remaining in the world is at Lukang. So, it is extremely precious.

The original Mazu stature of Meizhou was brought to Taiwan by General Shi Lang (施琅) in 1683 (康熙22年), and was enshrined in Lukang. The existing building was constructed in 1725 (雍正3年) .

In order to respect the ancestral temple, the gate of the temple is facing the direction of the Heavenly Queen temple in Meizhou (湄洲天后宮).‬

‪Try to visit TianhouTemple when there is a festival going on, There will be music -- a trifle discordant -- fire crackers and other celebrations. Tianhou Temple is dedicated to Mazu, who is a Goddess in Buddhist and Taoist religious traditions, Mazu is credited for saving seafarers in peril on the sea. Mazu was a real person, she lived in the late 10th century. She is venerated as Goddess of the Sea in Taiwan, especially in Lugang. Mazu temples can also be found in mainland China.‬

‪Matsu is the goddess of the sea, worshipped by Buddhists and Taoists as a god, She is called on in times of dire peril by seamen to calm the sea. The Taiwan Strait is treacherous, settlers crossing the "black water" often called on her intervention. This temple is very old, it is a feature of the historic Lukang port.‬

‪This temple is some 400 years old. It is dedicated to Mazu, the goddess to whom fishermen and sailors pray when they are in peril on the sea. Mazu was a young woman who had miraculous powers to quell storms, for which she was deified. She is held in awe by the people of Taiwan, there are several Tianho Temples on the island. Try and see a temple festival if you can, Lukang is an ancient port, it is important site for the worship of Mazu. Mazu is considered to be both a Taoist and Buddhist deity.‬
