Cute little town, but very packed with tourists. Even on a drizzly day! It’s fun to buy a lantern and write your hopes and wishes on it to be sent to the sky. Afterwords have some xialongbao.

Ever since I saw it on some retirement savings commercial several years back, I had been fascinated by the sight of hundreds of glowing paper lanterns floating up to the night sky. That was a major reason I convinced my husband to take a private tour of this area northeast of Taipei. As we drove toward Pingxi, we saw the lanterns dot the sky from afar. It was already magical.
We stopped at the foot of an old stone footbridge and immediately saw the lantern kits waiting for enthusiastic tourists like me to launch them. For NT$250, my husband and I were able to paint our own wishful messages on the four different colored panels each representing a category of wishes. It was just before the election so you can well imagine what I wrote. A guy assembled it for us and took us to the railroad track to launch.
He lit the flame that carries it upward, and we let it rip. Such a cool sight. A marketplace of food stands and souvenir shops surrounds the tracks which we were free to cross since so many lanterns were launched. Our guide Chiao was generous to buy us a couple of local specialties, peanut butter ice cream wrapped in a handmade crepe and chicken sausage with melted cheese on a stick. Most people take the train from Taipei to get here, but hey, what can I say? I'm a princess.

We enjoyed Shifen Old Street a busy and bustling tourist spot situated along the Pingxi Rail Line.
This area has a rich coal-mining heritage.
The main street has an array of shops and restaurants.
It claim to fame is the sky lantern lightings where visitors can inscribe their wishes on sky lanterns and release them into the sky.
We watched many get released into the air, like a hot air balloon.

Traveled to Shifen with our Taiwan guide as a part of our day trip to Yehliu Geopark, Jiufen and the gold mining museum. The Shifen portion just involved doing the lantern release, which was just one of those goofy tourist trap things. In our view it wasn’t worth the extra drive from Jiufen, but others might think it’s essential to paint stuff on a paper lantern and then watch it fly away for about five seconds. In our case it was late afternoon. Might be little more fun at night to see the lanterns go up. Also, it was windy so the lanterns were getting blown away quickly. But all in all it’s just as fun to light and release the Chinese lanterns back home! Recommend skipping this if you need to save time on your Taiwan itinerary.

While he was going to Jiufen, he went well enough and enjoyed raising the lantern. If you are going to go to Jiufen in the evening, it is enough to go the afternoon before that. Reservations were made in advance so we could raise the lantern immediately in a long line. Reservations are recommended in advance. We still recommend the ornate 8-color lantern for raising the lantern.

I think the old-fashioned streetscape remains. There were quite a lot of tourists and it was lively. The train had just arrived, so I think we were at a good time. To send a balloon made of paper flying, first write a wish. I wrote about health and home safety. The structure is pretty simple: put oil paper inside a red balloon and set it on fire. It feels like a balloon. I'm glad that my wishes flew far away. I was glad to do what I had seen on TV.

I visited the Ten Buddhas in a heavy rain. After a two-hour wait for a train to return from a warning of heavy rain, the service was suspended.
I couldn't get any Ubers or taxis anymore, and I followed the flow of locals and found a local bus running and packed, but I was able to get out of Taipei in about an hour and a half.
Even on such a heavy rainy day, the lantern seemed to be raised, and the lantern that fell into the turbid river was washed away. Even if you don't use plastic, you wonder what the environment is like.

One of the most interesting experiences here is the releasing of the sky lantern which bears your handwritten wishes. Different stalls offer different kinds of lantern ranging from a single color, four-color, and eight-color. Each color has its own meaning. Apart from this activity, there are food stalls and souvenirs around the rail tracks.

Join Klook to view Taiwan’s nature, its save, had guardrail. The bridge also big, the place so many good place to got photo, i love it.

It’s a bit too touristy but still has its charm with the central emphasis being those wanting to release their lantern. It’s not cheap but not too expensive yet everyone seems to enjoy the endeavour. Food stalls are nice but bit pricey and there’s this ridiculous train running through the middle of the town where people are releasing lanterns just 30 seconds before. You just had to be there.

hi, i notice that the sky lantern looks really beautiful when the sky starts to turn dark. What time does the sky turn slightly dark at Shifen Old Street? Thank you in advance

Hi I'm planning a half day trip out of Taipei in November with the missus and kids to Shifen just for the lanterns and of cos the food. Does anybody have a public transport option or a driver to recommend? Thanks in advance!

Half day can be a little short of time considering the travel time to and from that can last almost an hour each way not to mention a traffic. I would recommend to check from "Klook" specially if you're travelling with kids, less hassle rather taking your own way to go Shifen by bus which I'm not sure if there is direct bus from Taipei Main Station.

I hope to see the Ping Xi Lanterns Festival this year but I will only be arriving on the 14th of September 2019 and I heard that the mass light up will be on the 13th. I know you can light up lanterns at any other time but I want to see the huge amounts light up the sky. So my question is, will there be substantial crowd lighting up the lanterns over the weekend or would it be just for that one day? Will the other festivities also finish on that one day?

It is a must or will always be recommended in every tourist itinerary to at least experience this activities whenever your in Taiwan so it is expected to have a handful tourist anytime of the day, everyday.

バスかタクシーで九份から瑞芳（ルイファン、Ruifang）駅まで行き、平渓線に乗って十分へどうぞ。瑞芳駅から十分駅まで30-40分で到着です。一時間に一本くらいしかありませんのでご注意ください。

If we're not interested in lanterns is it still worthwhile to go to Shifen? We'll definitely be going to Juifen.

Is it alright, if you are OK to view how such a village looked in the past near a currently serviced train service.
If you are a little more adventurous, you can hire electric scooter to reach the shifen waterfall within 5 minutes.

ミニランタンを販売している土産物屋さんの店頭でおじいちゃんが筆ペンで文字を書いていたのは見ましたが、書道家かどうかは分かりません。
店の名前までは憶えていませんが、十分にある観光向けのお店は線路の両側に100mくらいまでしかありませんので現地に行ってからでも十分探せると思います。

Hi, we have 1.5 days and am wondering if we should use Taipei as our base to travel to jiufen, shifeng, Yeliu, shilin night market, rouhe night market and maybe also danshui. We will be coming from Maoli on a Fri late morning and will be leaving Taiwan on Sun noon. There are 5 of us with a few seniors, one of whom is 70+. we plan to book a vehicle to bring us around. Any recommendation? If possible, would love to visit sun, moon lake.

Yes, you can use Taipei as your base. I would recommend you to charter a mini van or vehicle for 5 of you for this 1.5 days. Jiufen, shifen and yeliu would need nearly whole day. You would most likely be only able to go to one of the night markets. Depending on how many hours is your 0.5 days, you may be able to visit Danshui. Sun Moon Lake is very unlikely in 1.5 days. As you have seniors and you have to walk in all the places, especially upward walking in Jiufen, you may have to forgo a couple of places. Enjoy your trip.

Is it better to book a cab tour (NT3500) from Taipei to Jiufen and Shifen or take the train and bus option (which are much cheaper)?
We have a group of 5, which 4 of them are over the age of 55.
Any advice?

Go to klook website and there is a mini bus that cost S$21 each two ways. Just to let you know that at Jiufen you will need to climb around 150 to 200 steps up.

Hi Donald, I agree if you find other place to stay, as Shifen itself is easily reached by train, which attraction is right by the train station. It's a nice place for 1-2 hour or so.
