A must see in northern Taiwan. You can see the park’s main attractions by getting on either the #302 bus (starts in Xincheng)) or the #310 bus (starts in Hualien). The buses circle the main road in the park, stopping at the main sights where you can get off and hop on another. The park visitor headquarters is located about a 1/2 mile outside the park and the buses don’t stop there.
When we went a number of the trails were closed due to rockslides or maintenance. The sights / stops worth seeing are the Tunnel of Nine Turn ( no car parking available), Tianxiang (where the buses turn around), Heilu camping zone, where you can walk a short distance to cross a suspension bridge over the gorge, and the Changchun shrine. Took one whole day and maybe if more trails were open could have spent two days.

I visited Taroko National Park in November 2022. I very much recommend getting a driver for your visit, as the roads can be difficult to drive on and it is especially helpful if you have a limited amount of time and want to maximize what you can see during your visit.
I highly recommend the driver I hired (based on many other positive reviews from others), Tonny Teng. He is very kind, knowledgeable, professional, and he made my visit to the park very easy and fun! His english is good and he will cater your day to your interests/needs.
I cannot recommend him highly enough!

Taroko National Park is a very scenic place. Not only are there towering peaks, but there are waterfalls that fall straight down, and there are many natural caves. Walk in the planned path, watch the swallows fly past you, watch the water continue to rush down. The end of the heart and eyes are only this amazing landscape, unknowingly has been climbing up. If you have time, take a walk to Taroko National Park. Use your eyes to see the scenery you wouldn't normally see, listen to the sounds of nature, and enjoy the comfort of the whole person bathed in the mountains and waters.

Took a day tour with Klook. Quite affordable and worthwhile trip. The Taroko National park and especially the Taroko gorge was the highlight of our itinerary. Very interesting and worthwhile tour. Must vist while in Hualien.

Taroko National Park is a gorge chipped out of the rock by veterans of the Republic of China (ROC) army. It is a spectacular sight. Taroko Gorge is Taiwan's top tourist attraction. Get a mini bus if you don't want to hire a car; there are lots of things to see. The National Park is the beginning of the Cross-Isand HIghway..

Has anyone booked online/experience the free Outdoor Interpreter service (english) which starts at the Taroko Visitors Centre to Tianxiang? Seems there is a multimedia presentation at this centre & another Landscape of Taroko at the Tianxiang Service Station. Wondering if they are worth attending.

These tours are good because the tour bus would drop you right at the scenic spot, so you don’t need to worry finding a parking spot (very limited) if you self drive or long waiting time for taking local bus.
Is the park opened to tourists during the 2019 Taiwan King of The Mountain biking event Oct 25?

Yes, there is bus service between Hualien and Taroko National Park. We have seen many tourists using it. Check with your hotel on arrival.

Hello, I am planning to go to Taroko National Park in December around Christmas, was going to find a train from Taipei. Did staying in Hualien go OK - or was is super busy/touristy? I wanted to do some all day hikes and sounds like I need a permit as well for that. Are you able to get permits when you get there, or do you know if you should apply on line as well? Thanks

I would rec'd staying in Hualien at least for 1-2 night esp. if you enjoy hiking. Staying in Hualien is a much slower pace than Taipei. It is a small coastal town that relies on tourism, but not overly touristy. It's like visiting San Francisco (Taipei) and Monterey (Hualien); analogy if you're familiar w/ Northern CA bay area. There is a night market where you can get local & aborigine foods; a small downtown (lots of mom & pop shops), in general the food/restaurants are cheaper here vs Taipei. We did not rent a car and relied on taxi's to take us from the train stn to our minsu; and our tour guides to/from Toroko Gorge NP.
The only trail in Toroko Gorge NP that requires a permit is the Zhuilu Old Trail. They limit the number of permits per day and you must start the hike no later than 10am (as they don't want hikers to be stranded too late on the trail @ the end of the day). For Zhuilu Old Trail, rec'd that you hire a guide to take you as they will pre-arrange the permit for you and provide you w/ a ride to/from Toroko NP from your hotel in Hualien. This is an all day activity. You can use a 2nd day to hike the shorter trails in Toroko GNP.

Hi I would like to know if you can visit the national park without a guide, just by following the trails? Do you need a permit etc?

I do not agree. There were signs along the road showing where the trails are.

Hello, we are planning to drive from Sun Moon Lake through Taroko National Park to Hualien. Any tips on must see? Also, are the trail heads hard to find? I've marked down some spots but worry about the signage and knowing when to stop.
Thanks,
Patsy

First of all, the road there is far from ideal. Be very careful and patient when you drive.
Road signages and Google map should be adequate to help you to navigate.
Several places that really impressed me in my last trip. They are:
Tianchi at Fushoushan Farm (Excellent view)
Wuling (Excellent view)
Bilu Giant Tree
Taroko Gorge
Try search them in Google map to see whether they are on your route.
Wish you a wonderful trip.
Hi, is it possible to go here for a day trip for Taipei? How far is the drive by car?

Hi Monica,
You can also take the train to Hualien and from there take the bus or what we did is to rent a taxi in Hualien for a whole day who will drop and pick u up any time and location. It is possible to do it in one day from Taipei to Taroko national park.
