Bikes sure are great. Very fun to ride around the lake. The paths can be crowded though. There are a few steep parts I had to walk for and you aren’t allowed to bike over the dam.

There are dedicated pathways for much of the route round the lake which makes for a pleasant and rewarding activity. One thing worth considering are the weather patterns around Sun Moon Lake. Generally, the clearest part of the day is at dawn and after lunch in particular the visibility worsens. Our hotel host confirmed this to be a regular weather pattern.
We set off from our hotel at 5.45 am and saw the lake at its most beautiful and serene before day tourists had arrived. We set off in an anti-clockwise direction from Shuishe for four reasons, 1) the track is almost deserted, 2) it is flat almost all the way around, 3) there are good spots for the sunrise and 4) it avoids a closed section before Wenwu temple that directs you onto the hilly main road. We hired simple pedal cycles, there are lots of bike shops around town.

Riding around Sun Moon Lake is my favourite activity from our visit to Taiwan. It was a lovely thing to do. Views and scenery were beautiful.
We hired e-bikes from Giant which made the hills a lot easier. The Giant bikes were really nice and the service at the Giant centre was fantastic. Also we could pay by credit card which I don’t think we could have done at some of the other shops. There are bike rentals everywhere.
I would suggest going early or choosing a quiet day. We arrived in SML on the Sunday which was really busy and used the ferry to visit some of the attractions. We hired the bikes early on the Monday and it was so much quieter than the Sunday. It took us 3 hours but we did not stop much.
The roads were less scary than I thought they would be. They were not super busy and drivers were quite considerate. We rode clockwise which meant we were mostly on the lake side of the road and seemed like a better way to ride. Also, when we go to the last off road trail, there were stairs amps which was not so bad to get the bikes down. I would not want to have pushed the bike up (which we would have had to do if we had ridden anti-clockwise).

Mostly beautiful bike route on separate paths along the lake. In general, the roads are well manageable, car traffic is mostly considerate, there are some drivers who are in a hurry and overtakes in the curves.
We recommend to run the tour clockwise.
Between the township of Ita Thao and Xingshan Visitor Center you have to drive on the road, an alternative that leads directly before the first tunnel right to the lake, requires many pushing passages due to stairs.
Beautiful spots along the route are very well signed.
It is only 30km with a few hundred meters of altitude, but you should consider the temperatures and humidity.
We looked at the various bicycle rental shops in Suishe and can highly recommend "Giant & Liv" at the back of the Suishe Visitor Center (visible from the large parking lot).
We recommend to run the tour clockwise.

我們在「百世客」租借車況還不錯
環潭腳踏車步道除了接近水社霸的車道因為沒有護欄強制規定要牽車通過外
其餘車道都可盡情馳騁
車道規劃完善、坡度起伏不大、視野開闊到處都是拍照的好風景
是CNN讚許的世界級美麗自行車道
一直到終點月牙灣的階梯前
單程騎騎停停約二小時
值得一試

公部門應該要完成環潭的, 目前這兩段就已經很讚。

日月潭風景好是大家都知道的，大家也知道日月潭可以騎腳踏車，可是大部分都不知道不能環湖。因為這一段不算長的腳踏車車道必須雙向通車，但是還需包含行走散步的遊客，不寬的木板腳踏車棧道，讓人騎起來有點緊張，跟宜蘭梅花湖比真是天壤之別。希望以後能開發拓寬+還能環湖+單向通車就安全舒適多了！

Cycling on a rented bike is a must do activity in Sun Moon Lake and is very popular. Sure beats walking as the lake is quite big. We booked our bikes online and cycled from Shuishe to Xiangshan and around. We met many fellow cyclists. On one of the boardwalks, we need to get down and push our bikes as cycling was prohibited. Weather was pleasant but sunny. Enjoyed this activity and got some exercise too. This bikeway is quite scenic.

バスで日月湖に着いたあと、自転車をレンタルして湖の周りを走りました。なお、レンタサイクル屋さんはバスが発着する観光センター周りに沢山あります。観光センタのすぐ隣にあるおみせは高い値段をふっかけてきましたが値段交渉をして安くなりました。少し離れた場所のレンタサイクル屋さんの方が交渉は楽かもしれません。
水社バスセンターから向山エリアまで行きましたが、サイクリングロードはキレイに整備されておりとても気持ちよく走ることができました。途中、写真撮影スポットもちゃんと準備されており、よく出来ていると思いました。向山観光センターの往復は3時間もあれば問題なかったです。

日月潭沿湖規劃有非常良好的自行車步道，最熱門的是由水社碼頭往向山方向這一段，但是由水社往觀霧碼頭方向，繼續延伸往伊達邵碼頭方向都有沿湖邊非常棒的自行車道兼步道，沿路風景優美，並沿途有觀景點，觀景點還有看版解說，整體規劃與維護的非常好。

Hi any recommended bike rental shop? and hows the price?

I rented my bike from GIANT. The rental was TW$600 for both the electric and regular bikes. I only found this out when I returned the bikes cos my husband took the ebike (smarter decision) and I took the regular. I found it abit odd, but I asked after I did payment when I returned the bikes. So, if you do rent from GIANT, get the price right. But, there are many bike shops along the start of the bike path, and all the prices are similar for those shops....around TW$200. The only difference is the quality of the bikes. I think it is ok to rent these bikes if just to bike round the lake.

I noticed tandem bikes on the bikeway and parents pedaling with kids on the back. . Unfortunately, I can't remember exactly about the seats because I wasn't looking for it :). The streets in town get very full with traffic and tourists but the bikeway, especially in the morning, will be just fine. Lots of places to rent bikes. So just go have a look when you get there. My Giant was 200 Tw$/ day.
