Easily one of the most beautiful temple complexes in Fukuoka. During fall, the yellow-golden to red leaves create a harmonious contrast with the pagoda colors.

…but just as striking with its varied architecture, specially the multi-level pagoda. The enormous main hall is also pretty spectacular, as are the huge monument stones at the side/back, which are covered in growth, giving them a surreal quality in the middle of a city.

Beautiful temple with nice surroundings. The 5-storey pagoda is also worth a visit. When we were there the temple was closed for inside viewing.

It is a 10-minute walk from Hakata Station along Taihaku-dori, and foreign tourists flock to Kushida Shrine and Tocho-ji Temple, especially in the morning. Admission is free, but you can enter the Fukuoka Great Buddha, one of the largest wooden seated statues in Japan, for 50 yen. Under the pedestal, there is a tour of hell and paradise, and you might even touch the wheel of fortune! Old Tamonten and Jikokuten statues are enshrined in the back left of the Great Buddha Hall. The five-story pagoda is made of pure cypress wood, so take a commemorative photo in a position where the building behind it is not in the picture. What is not well known is that the Jikokuten and Tamonten at the mountain gate were made in the Heisei era, and they are greeted in Yamakasa style with headbands instead of helmets. For history fans, there is a five-tiered pagoda for the grave of Kuroda Tadayuki and five other people who died in the line of duty, as well as the Daishi Hall, which was the original main hall in the Edo period. The five-story pagoda and Daishi Hall are not open to the public, and the main image of the statue of Kobo Daishi Kukai and the Thousand-Armed Kannon are usually not open to the public, but free volunteer guides are available to show you photos and give you explanations, so make use of them.

Few hundred meters from Kushina Shrine there is the Tochoji Temple, also one of the oldest temples. The red pagoda is truly impressive as well as the Buddha black pine statue inside the temple. The gardens serve as an amazing relaxing and tranquil place away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

A charming temple complex with a five-storied pagoda. You can enter the temple for free but there's a small entrance fee to see the impressive Great Buddha upstairs.

３月２６日。新幹線で博多駅に到着して、駅近くのホテルにチェックイン。初めに向かったのが、祇園駅近くにある東長寺です。
東長寺は「博多大仏」が有名なお寺ですが、今回は、ちょうど満開に咲き誇っていた桜をたっぷりと楽しむことができました。鮮やかな朱色が神々しい五重塔と満開の桜とが素晴らしかったです。

福岡大仏が有名な東長寺は、福岡の地下鉄の祇園駅近くにあります。私たちがこちらのお寺を訪ねるのは二度目でした。ですから、有名な福岡大仏がお目当てではなく、境内の桜を愛でにやってきたんです。
私たちが訪れた日は３月26日。2023年の福岡の桜はちょうど満開を迎えていました。東長寺の境内にも大きな桜の木があって、その満開の桜と艶やかな五重塔のコラボが素晴らしかったです。
