It's a stylish, beautiful town. I can understand a little bit why young people aspire to it. Yokohama and Minato Mirai have changed a lot since I visited here many years ago. My grandson chose to live here, and it has a different town feel to it from the countryside.

On Culture Day, Friday, November 3rd, I visited the ship to see the "Full Sails Unfurling" ceremony. This is done by sailors with experience aboard large sailing ships (Nippon Maru and Kaiwo Maru) as well as volunteer sailors. I was impressed by the fact that these beautiful sails are not just decorations, but are carefully designed and positioned to catch the wind and run. The full sails unfurling, which spreads all 29 sails, is carried out about 12 times a year, and the "Full Ship Decoration," which hoists international signal flags from the bow through the tops of each mast to the stern, is also carried out the same number of times, but these are only carried out at the same time a few times a year.
The history of sailing ships is long, dating back to ancient Egypt around 3000 BC. In the 15th century, the "Age of Discovery," when Europeans sailed to Africa, Asia, and the Americas, arrived, and sailing ships played a major role in international trade and naval battles. The period from the mid-18th century to the early 19th century is called the "Golden Age of Sailing Ships." However, from the beginning of the 20th century, they were usurped by steamships (steamships) that use the thermal energy of steam for propulsion, and disappeared during the First and Second World Wars.
Although sailing ships are no longer common as practical ships, they are still used as training ships to train sailors. The "Sailing Ship Nippon Maru (first generation)" is now retired, but its appearance from when it was in service is preserved and open to the public. It was built at the Kawasaki Shipyard in Kobe in 1930 (Showa 5), and during the 54 years until it was retired in 1984 (Showa 59) with the construction of the new Nippon Maru, it sailed mainly around the Pacific Ocean and trained about 11,500 sailors. Its beautiful figure was nicknamed the "Pacific Swan," and it is said that the distance it sailed during its active years was equivalent to 45.5 times around the Earth. During the war and for 10 years after the war, it was also involved in transporting coal in the Seto Inland Sea, repatriation voyages from overseas territories after the war, and the collection of remains in the Nanpo Islands.
After being retired and transferred to Yokohama City, Nippon Maru is moored in Dock No. 1 of the former Yokohama Dock and has been open to the public since April 1985. Yokohama Dock (now Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Yokohama Works) is a shipyard established in 1889 by Eiichi Shibusawa and local business leaders, and a total of three docks were built. In 1985, the area around Dock No. 1 was developed as the Nippon Maru Memorial Park, and in 1993, Dock No. 2 was renovated and opened as the Dock Yard Garden adjacent to the Yokohama Landmark Tower. Hikawa Maru, moored in front of Yamashita Park, is also a passenger ship built at Yokohama Dock. Nippon Maru will be 100 years old in 2030. The lifespan of a ship is generally said to be about 30 years, so it is a very long-lived ship. Having been exposed to the harsh environment at sea, the wooden parts have corroded and the iron parts have rusted, so careful maintenance and repairs are necessary. A crowdfunding campaign was conducted to maintain and repair the hull and restore the radio logbook, and donations far exceeded the initial goal. It is heartwarming to know that there are people all over Japan who care about the Nippon Maru.

This entire area has a lot to do and the Nipponmaru Memorial Park is within the general stroll of the entire Minatomirai area. It's available to see 24 hours a day, meaning the ship stays anchored. The lights seemed to turn off around 10pm. I am not sure if tours of the actual ship are available. You could easily spend the entire day checking out everything to see nearby also.

In contrast to the encompassing Landmark Tower and other skyscrapers nearby, this park is eerily peaceful. The lush and pleasant area pays homage to Yokohama's maritime history. More interested visitors may want to on-board the revamped Nippon Maru.
