Interesting little railway byway, especially the section from Bere Alston to Gunnislake over the viaduct at Calstock and around a steep twisty route to Gunnislake.

A cheap, reliable and scenic journey from Plymouth to Gunnislake. Where we went on to discover some lovely local pubs, river walks and abandoned mines!

I travelled the Tamar Valley Line on an overcast day and even though the weather was not fantastic I was BLOWN AWAY by the magnificent scenery.
I got the train from Plymouth to Gunnislake. When I visited there was a two hourly service running so make sure you check the times of the trains or you could have a long wait.
Leaving Plymouth you pass through the suburbs and over the dockyards and soon go under the mainline and head up the Tamar valley. It's a very pleasant run up to Bere Alston where the train reverses to head up to Gunnislake.
Before you get to Calstock you go over a viaduct and get some beautiful views of the river and the village. Get your camera ready!!! After Calstock the journey slows down as you have to stop for a couple of crossings and then you get to the terminus at Gunnislake.
I got a Devon Day ranger which gives you unlimited travel on the railways in Devon from 9:30 onwards for the day (Mon-Fri and no time limits at weekends). It was only £14.50 for an adult when I travelled.
The train I travelled on, like much of the GWR fleet, had free wifi which is handy for posting those pix to social media.

Only £15 for 3 of us return trip to Plymouth, yes all of us! - off peak - amazingly good value. Spectacular views of the Tamar Valley and the River Tavy; a fabulous way to see the countryside, Devonport dockyard, and going under the big Tamar Bridge too. The train starts off facing one way but reverses up to one of the stations, and then proceeds the last part of the journey backwards. A fun surprise. And there are tunnels and viaducts and water on all sides so its great for children too.
Beware of travelling after schools as it is busy - the train fills up with teenagers going home, all beautifully mannered, well behaved, lots doing their homework on laptops, and a credit to their schools. Good to see that is not only a tourist attraction but a proper commuter train too.

Scenic it is not.
The first ten minutes from Gunnislake would be scenic if you could see through trees.
A modern overly hot train and if you return from Plymouth at 16:36 it’s basically school transport.
There are literally 100s of more pleasant train journeys in Britain.
On the plus side it is very cheap, go figure.

A great little scenic trip to from Plymouth that is a must to save on the winding roads. Prices are very reasonable and the scenery is stunning (until you near the old industry of Plymouth’s suburbs). The kids were kept occupied by the bridges and tunnels too.

Had a great time on the diesel train from callington to Plymouth. The train for 3 adults cost around £12 for a return journey and that’s not per person, that’s for 3 people. We’re comparing the 50 mins journey to an equal distance on a railway in Kent and the cost is nothing in comparison but the service is hugely different in a good way. The route is brilliant and goes over three bridges, all with fantastic views. The journey was smooth and the children onboard were even given activity packs - colouring books of trains and bridges with crayons. The staff were very friendly and all together was an amazing experience. Would definitely recommend this service and would love to do this again.

I didn't use the Tamar Valley line, but visited Calstock at the end of May, on my 1 week holiday in Devon. I wanted to see the viaduct, and from different forums I found that the best way is from the village. Hence I popped into the car on a bit rainy day to find it. I remember the rain stopped and just when I was somewhere on the top of A386, it became foggy from one minute to the other, but I have never seen that thick fog in my life. Surely I could see just 4-5 meters ahead and it was a bit scary being only myself in the car. It took about 10-15 minutes or so, and first in my life I saw what means to be lost in the fog. I guess that can be ordinary to the locals, but for me it was new.
The village is very steep as we go down to the valley to reach it. Little, quiet, very pretty village by the way, and though it is lovely with a tourist's eye, but walking around I have seen many "on sale" signs on the doors and gates. I can imagine, it's not the best place after summer season, especially if someone is commuting, and also not too close to bigger towns. I just walked by the river bank taking a few pics of the viaduct, but hardly could take one without boats or crane in the view, because some construction was visible on the other side. Spent no more than an hour in the village and headed to Cotehele, which was the main attraction of the day. There is a bigger car park at the community center, and luckily free toilets, too. Also, a restaurant/pub/inn just next to it.

Picked up this lovely restored train in Gunnislake and rode it into Plymouth. What a delighful ride, for just few Pounds we were able to view the Cornwall & Devon counryside in a historic old rail environment. I strongly urge those who love the old trains to take this ride along the Tamar Valley and enjoy a bit of nostalgia riding through some of the prettiest country in Western England

Hi . Looking to take my father on the train at august bank holiday. He is not very mobile. Looking to break up the trip and stop off on the route. I gather it is 2 hours between trains - where would be the best place to stop off and have lunch and look at a few shops? I gather calstock is nice but reviews suggest it’s very steep. Could anyone give me some advice? Thanks Paul

Can you take dogs on the train?

Yes, might want to make sure they are on a lead.
Is it accessible to my husband's mobility scooter?

Hi Pauline I am so sorry I have not been on Tripadvisor recently and therefore missed your question. Certainly at the stations themselves you can get to the platforms (ie Plymouth has lifts and gates you can go through and Gunnislake has a slope that goes from the parking area to the open-air platform) however, I don't know about actually getting on to the train itself. Sorry I can't help more.

Thinking of taking my 3yo and 2 yo kids on this to kill a day as they love trains.
Is there anything to do at gunnislake for kids that age? Maybe a play park etc?
Thanks
Yes-----There is the Donkey Park with play barn and café just up the road at St Anns Chapel.
There are Trip Advisor reviews which are mainly very good.
I have been there and thought it well worth a visit ( but unfortunately expensive.)
However if you leave the train at the first station ( Calstock ) and then walk down to the quay, there is a free play area ,brilliant ice cream shop and lots to see , especially the view of the viaduct.
Hope this helps
Brian
