‪If you enter from the Orange and Black Path, there is a warning sign, but it is not well situated, and because the Orange and Black Path has what we thought were some scary parts, we thought the sign was referring to the part we had already traversed. As a result we went up this trail without really knowing what we were getting into. We were lucky we were there early, had good footwear and were appropriately dressed.

Before starting this trail we did not know the meaning of scary. You cannot ascend without climbing multiple sets of iron bars, which go straight up like a ladder in some places, and twist around unseen corners of the cliff in others. There are also narrow portions of the trail where you have nothing to hang onto, and a trip or a slip could easily be fatal. The trail is generally pretty narrow and if you need a break to wipe your sweaty palms and calm down your breathing, you have to wait until the trail allows it--in many areas there is nowhere to stop. This is absolutely not a trail to do in bad weather.

The bars were actually the fun part of the trail. I felt safe on them. I did not feel particularly safe on some other parts of the trail that had no handholds, especially when I could see that some of the rocks were still wet. The views are spectacular, though you can ascend to the top via another trail.

There were four of us ranging from mid 50's to early 60's--the least athletic person hikes maybe once a month for an hour or two. None of us found the trail to be physically exhausting--the challenge is more psychological. The trail is probably doable for most people who are moderately active like us but I don't recommend for people with a strong fear of heights or anyone who has balance issues. Know that there is at least some risk--if you would never go skydiving, you probably shouldn't do this trail.

Days later we are still talking about this hike.‬

‪I have a fear of heights and this is exactly something you don't do when you have this fear. I, however, went against my sweaty palms and noodle legs and up the mountain I went. My boyfriend saw a whole new side of me and I'm wondering if he still wants to marry me. I basically scampered up the mountain and never looked down, up, to the side, heck, I'm surprised my eyes weren't closed the whole time. Great. My palms are getting sweaty again.

Honestly, it's beautiful. The rungs you climb and the bars you shimmy across could probably be better placed at some points, or more of them. Actually, can someone just let me koala them up the mountain?

Wear good shoes with grab, do not climb when it's wet (leaves and boulders will be your death, seriously), and prepare for an amazing view at the top!

And when you start descending down a different path, you'll ask yourself why the heck you didn't just go up that way to begin with.‬

‪I was terrified to do this trail before I began. I would say I am oderately afraid of heights, far more than my hiking buddies who seemed unphased. I talked myself up and worked up the courage and I am glad that I did. The initial portion of the trail is bouldering, then you climb about 0.6 miles up the mountain on a combination of iron ladders and rungs secured into the mountain to reach the summit. At the summit the views are breathtaking! When you are mid climb you feel very safe. I am afraid of heights, but the level of detail and intentionality put into the ladders and iron handlebars made me feel very safe. At no point did I feel like my life was at risk. Was I super afraid before doing this trail that I almost pooped my pants? yes. Now that I’ve done it and experienced it, Would I do this trail again? absolutely!!
Also, if you can do beehive then you can do precipice. Precipice is like beehive but 0.6 miles longer in the ascent.‬

‪This was harder and more dangerous than expected. I took my 9 year old son who is very capable and a somewhat experienced hiker. I had to give him two or three boosts. In hindsight, I would've waited until he was probably 12 years old. I recommend this hike, but it is no joke and you have to be capable.‬

‪This is not a hiking trail. It is a non-technical climbing trail. That means, while you don’t need ropes and such to climb, you will be climbing almost the entire time. There is no stretch of flat ground to walk on, you are always climbing over rocks, boulders, and or ladders. In many places you need to pull yourself up over rocks. There are helpful handholds in some places. In some places the handholds are required, i.e, you can’t get up without them. If you have a fear of heights, have knee or balance issues, or can’t do some serious climbing this is not the trail for you. This is also not a trail for young kids. You may want to wear pants or you may scrape your knees or legs as in some cases you need to climb with knees first and you’ll need a good pair of shoes with a good grip as in some places, the granite can be a bit smooth. Also, you need patience, as the trail is narrow, you can’t really pass and when we were there, we saw a few people who really shouldn’t have been on that trail, causing a huge hold up for everyone else. We came down a different trail then switched back to this one which was a huge mistake as we had to wait for the crowd going up. Also watch out for snakes. We saw one and it didn’t feel great to be forced to place your hands (to pull yourself up) in the same area where the snake had disappeared. But, with all those comments over, if you aren’t afraid of heights, have good balance and good knees and arm strength, this was a very fun trail to climb. I’d definitely do it again.‬

‪Challenging hike, but so worth it! You need to be in good shape, wear good shoes and I recommend gloves too. Take your time so as to not make a careless mistake that could end in injury. Focus on what you are doing, and not how you could easily fall. The metal bars along the way are a big help. The trail is overall very well done, could use a little help in deciphering which way to get down. We ended up having to walk along park loop road for a while.‬

‪We've been to Acadia many times, and whenever we wanted to ascend the Precipice trail, it was always closed due to the nesting of the Peregrine Falcon. This year, we arrived a little later than usual (end of August) and were delighted to learn that the trail was open (since mid August, actually).
The trail offers a combination of a rather fun/challenging climb (rungs and ladders. Plenty of), as well as amazing views of the islands surrounding Bar Harbor.
You need to be quite fit to hike(/climb) this trail, and to have sufficient muscle power in your lower, as well as upper body.
Don't need to be a professional rock climber or be Marathon ready though. Just use your common sense.
If you only time to do one hike in Acadia - do the Precipice trail. You will not regret it.‬

‪Amazing hike/ climb. Beautiful views from the summit. My kids (10 and 12) made it up without a problem. It had rained the day before so there were some slippery spots. Even with that, everyone loved it!!
Important: we mistakingly went down the back of the mountain (Beachcroft trail) instead of the North trail to orange and black. This was near vertical with wet/ slippery surfaces and we had to go down a lot of it on our rears. We also came out near the Sieur de Monts parking area which was no where near our car. Luckily the Island Express stops there and got us back to our car. All in all we loved it and will come back!‬

‪Another Acadia "must do" if you are in shape. We went up Precipice to Champlain, then over to Gorham Mountain and exited to the South of Thunder Hole. We walked back via Ocean Path Trail and stopped at Thunder Hole. It was a long route but was mostly a descent after Champlain so was fairly easy. We started at 7:45 on a cloudy, foggy morning and had the trail almost to ourselves. Reached the summit fairly quickly, stopped for breakfast and within 30 minutes the fog had burned off and we were rewarded with spectacular views. So don't let the weather scare you off.‬

‪We went during October foliage. Early start makes less traffic and better parking. If going Oct 1-15 this hike is just outside the area that requires reservations, so ignore all the "turn back if you do not have reservation" signs because you can exit all the way up to the checkpoint. Wear shoes with GOOD tread, bring water, and avoid if raining or if you fear heights. Your heart beat will get going at points, so don't dress too warm. This is truly an exciting climb on huge boulders, vertical walls with iron rungs, and narrow paths along steep sheer cliffs. Blue paint dots trees and rocks to help mark path, which is nice because the Posted map at trail head is terrible. We went just over 600 feet height to the marker direction of “Orange and Black Trail”. Here, we diverted onto that trail. However, you can continue further up Precipice trail ...but it gets much steeper and longer, and leads to North Ridge Trail. We had other agendas for the day, and felt the hike filled all our expectations, so we diverted to Orange and Black Trail at the first sign. As for difficulty, I'm healthy, but not in any amazing shape. My short reach definitely appreciated having my husband’s hand on the first set of iron rings, but it was fine after that, and once it started descending, as long as your shoes have good dread so you don't slip, it gets pretty easy. We went VERY slow, very sure footed, and took time for pictures, so the 2.3 mile circle took us just under 2 hours. The last ¼ mile has you walking on road back to car. I would use all trails map or some app like "map my run " just so you can see our path. I saw two young ones about 12 years old on hike, but it’s definitely NOT for kids or anyone that may be clueless or immature in understanding the danger that exist. Once careless footstep could cost your life. That being said, it’s probably one of most memorial hikes ever and if you divert onto Orange and Black trail at the first sign, it doesn't take your whole day. If you have a chance, give it a go !‬
