‪I've previously hiked Neck Spring loop, Syncline loop and Murphy loop. If you haven't done these hikes I highly recommend the Murphy loop, which is scenic and fun. But I wanted to try something new, so I chose Wilhite.

The initial descent was steep and rocky, but the trail was well marked. For me the challenging part was when the trail turned south at 4900' elevation and skirted a steep hillside before dropping 300' to the valley floor. For this section I really had to pay close attention to the cairns. Lots of twists and turns, with narrow sections and steep drop-offs.

At the bottom you get classic Canyonlands views of buttes and washes. Some interesting rock formations in the wash. When I reached White Rim road I found a miniature slot canyon forming in the slickrock. This was fun to explore, though since I was by myself I had to make sure that I could climb back out. Hike out was fine, but again I relied on the cairns.‬

‪We had a ranger recommend this trail. We weren't looking for a 10 mile hike but she said if you turn back at the switchback it's a 3 mile roundtrip nice walk. She was right, the trail is sandy at times, rocky at others, require a small amount of rock scrambling so be prepared. We found the switchback path to be hard to find and they looked difficult to hike because of the rocks on the path and the steepness of the trail. We turned back at this point but we thought this was a great fun trail that not many people go to and that was a plus, no crowds! Bring plenty of water and weat appropriate shoes.‬

‪As part of our 4-day backpacking adventure, we hiked Wilhite Trail down (and I do mean "down") to White Rim Road. A small brown sign on the side of the road indicates where to park, and rock cairns (stacks of rocks) indicate where to hike once you're out on the trail. We didn't get lost at all, but we did have to pay attention to the rock cairns quite a bit.

We did this hike mid-week in late-May and saw only a few other hikers. It was great having the trail almost all to ourselves and really getting to enjoy nature. The first mile or so is on pretty flat ground, and then it dramatically descends down into a canyon. For us, this constant downhill got a little old, but the views during the descent and "at the bottom" were worth it.

There's shade on the descent in the canyon but not much anywhere else, so definitely wear a hat and sunscreen. There are plenty of washes to camp in at the bottom if you're overnighting.

NOTE: You must bring your own water since there are no water sources on the trail. Even if you make it to the Green Ricer, you will not be able to access water, or at least you'll break your filter trying to filter out all the silt (so we were told).‬
