Crater Lake rim is at about 1,880 meters. While there is a road that goes all around the lake, the winter snows cover it in about 10meters of snow. The North Entrance is closed currently and will not open until mid April. Most people who go to Crater Lake in the winter go there for snow shoeing or snowmobiling. There are tours available from Medford, Oregon, but I doubt that they will be as many during the winter as most people visit Crater Lake about July - September when the roads are fully open. If you only have a limited time in Oregon, I would suggest visiting somewhere that is at a lower elevation or visit later on in the year. Agree with Absolutely. However expect the unexpected. At altitude and late in the year it could snow. Be prepared.

Yes. I personally find it the better view and offers a lot more. Check for reservations at the lodge. Take the time to hike a little at some of the turnouts. Enjoy!

We were up there a month ago, so there were no fires at that time near Crater Lake. I would look at the Crater Lake Webcams just prior to your trip and determine if it is worth it. You could also try calling the ranger stations out there and see what it might be like when you are up there. I can't post links, but do a google search with the search words of (crater lake cams)

The only major fireworks event would be at the Jackson County Expo located in Central Point, Oregon or Ashland, Oregon 4th of July or Ashland 4th of July both sponsored by their respective Chamber of Commerce .. check their websites for times and events

You can totally travel around Crater with a large vehicle like that; it will be slow going and the drivers behind you will want to tear their hair out because they will be trapped behind you on the single, no-passing roads around the lake but they are built to accommodate your type of transit. Double check that your camping area has space for such a large rig though; often camping areas are restrictive on the specific sites based on the gear you have. Safe travels!

I was there in September, and there was about 6" of snow on the ground, temps in the low 30's. The snow made it even more beautiful!!

We've always driven our own car. The roads are clearly marked, well paved and easy to navigate; this gives us the chance to stop and go as we see fit. Tours are arranged through private companies, not the NPS, so you would have to do the leg work on those.

You can attempt it but you won't get very far since the roads are closed. nps.gov!
