‪The trail here is steep, steep, steep. Even I was cussing myself out for wanting to make it to the lookout. The reward is 360 degree views of the “heart of Glacier.” It was foggy today so the views were muted on the east side, but clear on the west. If you make it and the weather is clear, the views will be literally once in a lifetime. Also take your bear spray!!!!! We had 2 separate encounters with a bear here, and it charged the part of our group that set out after us because they didn’t want to do the tough hike. Just remember what to do. It stopped and then just went to the creek and started playing. ‬

‪View Swiftcurret Mountain from Many Glacier Hotel or hike to the top via Swiftcurrent Pass. Either way, you will not be disappointed. ‬

‪This 14 mile hike is a challenge. It starts out with a 5 mile relatively flat and easy trail but then climbs 2500 ft in the last two miles. Knowing that we would be ascending as the heat was building, we started the hike at 8am. There is little protection from the sun as you climb in elevation. But all the efforts are rewarded with amazing views of lakes, waterfalls and glaciers. We encountered mountain goats, ptarmigans, marmots & pikas. We chose to hike to the view of the chalet on this adventure because of the heavy wild fire smoke. Once we crossed the continental divide the smoke was overwhelming. On the return hike, we slowed down and enjoyed the alpine lakes & waterfalls. If you are a seasoned hiker...this hike is a must do!‬

‪It's about a 2500 elevation gain, but all of it is in the last 3 miles. So 4 miles of flat past three lakes, then switchbacks up to the pass. The last three miles are well worth it for the wondeful views.‬

‪Between 2000-2015, I hiked to the summit of Swiftcurrent Mountain about a dozen times. Without question, this is probably the most scenic hike in the park. It is also one of the toughest.

The most common routes are from Logan Pass or Many Glacier. The Logan Pass (Highline Trail) is 7.6 miles to the Granite Park Chalet with minimal elevation gain. Views are almost unrivaled...anywhere. From Granite Park Chalet, the trail begins climbing towards Swiftcurrent Pass. Watch for the trail intersection near the pass (often marked by discarded backpacks and exhausted looking hikers). The last mile to the summit is a grind. The lookout appears and reappears like an alpine mirage. The winds can be stiff as well.

The Many Glacier approach is about 8 miles with close to 4000 feet of elevation gain. The prevailing philosophy in the CO Rockies is to start hiking early to avoid PM thunderstorms. In Glacier, my philosophy was to start about an hour after (0900) the first wave of hikers (0800) to avoid encountering or getting charged by Grizzlies or moose. There is nothing fun about encountering these animals on the trail so let somebody else have the National Geographic-"esque" photograph.

From Bullhead lake, the trail climbs steadily towards Swiftcurrent Pass. With ever expanding views of the Swiftcurrent headwall, this might be some of the most amazing hiking in the lower 48 states. The trail is tough but well maintained.

From the pass, hike the final mile to the summit and enjoy a stunning view of the Northern Rockies.

Upon your return to Many Glacier or Logan Pass, I encourage you to savor huckleberry ice cream from one of the local camp stores. A handful of Advil or a jump into one of the cold, mountain lakes will thwart muscle cramping. Enjoy...

‪Long day but worth every mile. Saw a momma grizzly across the lake with her cubs so be aware and be loud. The switchbacks will take part of your soul. Getting to the top though with the overlook is something I'll never forget. If Buck is around in the residence, try and cook up a conversation with him. He has summited nearly every peak in the park and has the craziest knowledge. Don't get to the top of the pass and quit. Go all the way up. There is an outhouse up there which is nice. Not crowded once you get to the switchbacks, a lot of the early traffic is to the lakes. ‬

‪This hike is absolutely breath-taking!! If I could only do one hike in Glacier this would be it! I found this hike through several hiking blogs and decided it had to go on my itinerary.
Due to time restrictions and easier accessibility we started this hike by parking at "The Loop" along Going to the Sun Road. This is the best option for people staying on the west side of the park. It is also possible to get to the summit via Logan's Pass and the Highline Trail; however, is route is longer (albeit very scenic) and Logan's Pass was closed when we visited over 4th of July. The other option is taking the long Swiftcurrent Pass Trail from Many Glacier.
The Loop Trailhead to Granite Park Chalet starts at 4,297ft and ends after 4.2 miles at 6,650ft. Although the trail starts rather un-scenic, after a mile or so the views of Heaven's Peak and the surrounding mountains are breath-taking.
It took approximately two hours to get to Granite Park where we ate lunch and then continued on Swiftcurrent Pass Trail towards the Swiftcurrent Lookout trail head. It is approximately 2.3 miles from the chalet to the top of Swiftcurrent Mountain. There are 36 switchbacks on the lookout trail and it is strenuous work but COMPLETELY WORTH THE VIEWS! If you have problems with vertigo or heights stay off this trail! Once you reach the top the views are indescribable! There is a small fire lookout at the top along with views of the Great Continental Divide, Swiftcurrent Glacier (1,000 ft below), and endless lakes. Pictures can't do it justice. If you are up for a challenge with a huge reward, this is your hike!!‬
