As you enter the lake (facing the Tetons) walk left. Left side is more demanding, so you still have the energy for the rest of the hike. Flowers and the aroma that was present on the backside was incredible! Talked to many pealing the trail. Great conversations. The water was so clear and pristine! Saw many cutthroat trout in the lake. HUGE!!! This place even has a rock that you can jump into the lake from about 18-20’! No worries it’s deep! Simply put ENJOY!

We visited the Laurence Rockefeller Preserve which of itself is very intersting given the insight and forsight of Rockefeller. We then took the Lake trail which is a circuit. You go through beautiful forestsThe hike begins with a short walk across a sagebrush flat to reach the LSR Visitor Center. Beyond the visitor center the trail enters a mixed forest dominated by spruce, fir and lodgepole pine.
The Lake is the destinatio but the journey is also scenic and intersting. We saw a Moose and its calf. Bear spray is necessary . The walk is very intersting and unlike Jenny Lake or Taggart Lake is quiet with not many people walking around

Part of the trail was closed off due to bear activity, but we still enjoyed our walk. It was fairly easy going and the reward of the lake made it totally worthwhile.
On a late September afternoon, it was very quiet and parking was easy. We were lucky enough to see some elk on the return leg of the walk.

Jump Rock is dangerous and you are miles from help if you get hurt.
The park service reported about a rescue:
"At approximately 3:30 p.m. on Monday, (August 8, 2022) Teton Interagency Dispatch Center received another call from a party reporting their friend, a 22-year-old female, had hurt her back after she jumped into Phelps Lake from the rock feature known as “Jump Rock.” The patient was unable to walk more than a few steps. Park rangers were flown via the Teton Interagency helicopter to Phelps Lake to evaluate the patient. . ."
Plus, you are role models for kids watching who might try it. Please reconsider jumping from jumprock.

We had a wonderful experience on this trail! We went with our kids (12, 10, and 9 years old) and it was the perfect length. Everyone was ready to be done when we arrived back to the visitor center. We didn’t do the Jenny Lake trail, but we loved this option because there were WAY fewer people around. The ranger who met us in the lot was wonderful. A great experience was had by all!

Bumpy dirt road to get to the trailhead. Steep narrow trail. Beautiful overlook area. I recommend it if you don't mind a steep hike.

A hike rated as "easy", the hike to the Phelps Lake Overlook is a 2 mile round trip walk with 395 feet of elevation gain. Our kids (ages 5 and 11 at the time) and my parents in their 70's were able to do the hike.
Once you reach the overlook, you can turn back or continue on 1.4 miles further to the sandy beach area. A few of us went on a bit and I'm so glad we did because we spotted a moose in the lake! We turned back though when hikers ahead of us spotted a bear. We were not prepared to get face to face with any kind of wildlife on this trip!

Absolutely stunning at first light. Lots of bear activity when we visited in October 2021, so the trail was partially closed for safety. Still definitely worth visiting. Not too hard or steep of a trail at all.

Really nice snowy hike with plenty of trail options. I started a bit late to do the entire loop trail all the way around, but still had an awesome time. Highly recommend.

With other trail heads in the area totally packed, we were mostly alone on the first part of our Wednesday morning hike to Phelps lake. The calmness of our hike was in stark contrast to the busyness of Jackson or Yellowstone. The parking situation limited trail overload at the closed conservatory, But this was nowhere near an issue at 7am. It is a fairly easy hike, especially for the beauty!

Many of my friends said the parking area gets full. What time do you think we should arrive by?

If the Rockefeller preserve is closed, where can you park? We will be there this Spring before the preserve opens.
Thanks.

Marilyn:
I'm not sure whether the preserve opens when the road opens. Or, to put it another way, I'm not sure whether the opening of the preserve is dependent on the opening of the road. Let me put it a third way: I know the road is still closed now; there was just an announcement about it being open for winter uses -- cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, etc. -- but it isn't plowed and open for cars. The opening of the road for cars, and the opening of the preserve, may be connected.
If that's the case, it would be a bit of a hike from the Moose Visitor Center, or some of the other buildings there, just to get to the trailhead. It would, no doubt, be glorious, but it would be a couple more miles in, and out, added to your hike.
Hope you have a great trip. We can't wait to get back there in June!

I plan on hiking Phelps Lake and jumping off of Jump Rock in Mid-May. I've heard the water is pretty cold, but is it safe to take a dip?
كُتب بتاريخ 7 فبراير 2018
It's absolutely safe to take a dip. When we watched people doing it this past summer, they gave us two pointers: 1) don't hesitate -- just do it! and 2) don't dive, and don't put your arms out to the side; just jump with your arms close to your sides. You'll come up fine, you'll swim the ten yards to shore, you'll get out, and you'll feel exhilarated!

This will be my first destination when I get to Jackson. Is the center, park and trails open year round? I will be traveling up in Nov or spring.
