‪We've hiked many of the trails at this park, but cannot believe we haven't hiked this wonderful new family favorite until now! We asked a park ranger what his favorite trail was and this was one of his favorites. We can see why! The very first benefit is there is actually available parking at the trailhead, even after 7 am! We came around lunch time, and it was nearly empty. There are so many beautiful family picture spots along this trail - from the various river views, the wooden bridges (not stroller friendly), the woods, the falls, the rocky paths, and the historic barn and hiking club cabin. We spent time enjoying different areas and views, saw a bear, a dear, and a few salamanders, and just absolutely enjoyed the beauty of this trail filled with variable terrain from gravel, dirt, rock, and wooden bridges. Thank you to the park ranger that recommended this trail!‬

‪This was a nice hike. It was a little less maintained than other hikes, which I prefer, because you feel more connected with nature. Youre walking on rocks, so sturdy footwear is a must. My mother (67) and I liked this hike very much. The waterfall was beautiful and the hike was moderate. Mom was a little scared crossing the makeshift Bridge over the river. ‬

‪We really enjoyed this hike on our last day in the Smokies. It was an enjoyable last day hike after doing a number of other harder hikes in the days prior. It was a steady incline most of the way up, but not steep, so a nice slow and steady climb. Poles were helpful as there are a bunch of roots and rocks and we needed to cross over some waterways. NOTE: We too missed the waterfall! It is very easy to miss. After the log bridge (which is cool) go up about half a mile. When you have to cross a little stream, look up to your left - the waterfall is up to the left quite a ways back in the greenery. We missed it and walked another mile before turning around. There is a little path up to the left after you cross the stream that takes you to views a little closer to the falls.‬

‪We did this trail with 6 children. 3 of those children were 2 and under. We only did the trail to the Whaley Barn and house and then came back. It is an incline to the barn and we did bring our strollers. It is doable with a stroller but you would have to carry the stroller up to the barn. We left ours at the bottom of the hill and came back for it. We would have loved to gone on to see the falls but our children were pretty whooped since they had played in the creek for a couple of hours before we did the hike. We saw many wildflowers and the trail follows the stream.‬

‪I have been through the Smokies about 30 times in my life. But this was my first time on this trail. I will come back often! It is past the Greenbriar picnic area (a gem in itself!) The trail will follow Porters Creek. Take a detour to some historic log cabins, one of which sheltered the Smoky Mountain Hiking Club. Other log edifices include a homestead and a cantilevered barn. At the 2-mile mark, you will reach Fern Branch Falls, a 60-foot cascade.‬

‪This trail has a great mix of terrain, creek views, history, rustic log-bridge crossing, and a waterfall. However, we totally missed most of the stuff on the way out. Missed the waterfall and kept hiking at least another half mile uphill until we finally just decided to turn around. I just happened to see it on the way back because I stopped as I crossed a narrow stream and looked around. It's at a distance and pretty overgrown in Aug, plus water isn't flowing as heavily. It's still a great falls, but hard see the full falls, given the tree cover and distance from the trail.
After doing a check on my phone, I also stopped at the farmstead (no one else in the family was interested) and knew where to look for the graveyard this time. I like this kind of history stuff, the family, not so much.
I also think we got most of our insect bites on this trail. But it feels way more remote and is far less crowded than the popular trails near the main entrances. Access is a narrow logging road I wouldn't drive at night.‬

‪First off it is hard to find off 321..gps of no help..turn at Honey bbq..after about a half mile the road turns to a gravel..dusty and "VERY" narrow road for 3 miles..at some places the road is only one car wide..had to back up twice to let car pass..you cannot go faster than 15 mph or your gonna have a head on...just before the trailhead are restrooms and a huge picnic pavilion..once there the trail is a good 6 ft wide..hard gravel path..easy walking..a steady uphill path to the top..I would say it is moderate all the way..path follows the creek and it is a beautiful very wooded and shady..no sun to be had ..very cool temp! Have fun..saw several families with small kids..great trail.‬

‪Drove all the way to this trail only to discover it was closed to all users and blocked off. I'm the planner and am typically very thorough. I even recall checking the GSNPS site. Nothing jumped out and they even had it listed as recommended for kids. Very disappointing! Later, we researched it and found it was closed on a comment section on an independent trail review site. I also dug through the GSNPS site (as again nothing was obvious about it not being opened in my original planning) and found the name of the road that lead to it was closed, but no mention of the trail. People were just kind of parked and not sure whether to walk around gate or go elsewhere, so we weren't alone in this. The road was obviously closed to cars due to a huge hole. My husband later read that a foot bridge leading to the trail was also destroyed so I'm glad we didn't hike the road a mile to the trail as we considered doing. I don't rate it as terrible or 1 star because I have no idea what it was. I rate the ease and obviousness of the park site not noting it by the trail name as many others do about closures. ‬

‪Limited parking at the trailhead, Hiking trail is mostly uphill from the trailhead. Trail is wide with gravel for the first mile to the old homestead then the next mile gets narrow, rough with roots, rocks and muddy to the falls. Exceptional views along the creek and spectacular creek crossing on a cut log with rails. Would love to hike it when the mountain laurel is blooming.‬

‪My 4 & 8 year old boys had a great time stopping along the trail to play on the massive boulders & in the river. Easy walking trail.‬
