‪The hike to Hen Wallow Falls is approximately 4.5 miles. It is a very secluded peaceful trail. It is not too strenuous, just lots of roots and rocks that you need to watch out for. The waterfall is very beautiful at the end. I would call this trail moderate just because of all the rocks and roots.‬

‪Passed the crowds at Laurel Falls and Alum Cave to do this less crowded hike. It did not disappoint. Overall hike is about 4.5 miles, there are some rocky and some root sections, but not too terribly strenuous. There are some neat log bridges to cross the stream.. There was one short steep section getting to the falls. We went after lunch, took about 3 hours total with a long snack stop at the falls.‬

‪Hen Wallow Falls is a side trail off of Gabe's Mtn Trail and is a 4.5-mile out and back hike. As soon as you step off from the trailhead (about 40-yards west of the Cosby picnic area) you are instantly enveloped in the forest; Hemlock evergreens and the winter spins of large Tulip Poplars are everywhere, but the thing that catches one's eye are the abundance of Rhododendron. The trail is a steady, gradual, uphill climb, gaining 920-ft over the distance of 2.1-miles. There are large tree roots and stones over much of the trail; all water crossings have either some type of bridge or stones to aid in crossing. The park guide list the hike as moderate in difficulty; I would think anyone in decent shape could easily complete the hike. We encountered a dozen groups while on the hike, but this was only in passing and we always were able to travel at our own pace with the feeling for the most part, that we were the only ones on the trail.

At the 2.1-mile marker there is a wooden sign directing you to a descending trail on the right to Hen Wallow Falls. This is the steepest part of the hike down to the base of the falls. As usual, you hear the falls well before you see them, but eventually you round a corner on the path and there is the waterfall. Hen Wallow Falls are listed as 90-ft high. It said to be 2-ft wide at the top where Hen Wallow Creek becomes the falls and fans out to about 20-ft at the base of the falls.

With the exception of the hike up from Hen Wallow Falls to the trail junction the return trip is all downhill. Expect to devote NLT 3-hours for the hike.‬

‪The trail was rocky and many tree roots that made the trail hard to walk. The trail was mostly uphill. We are an older couple and really didn't have any troubles other than the roots and rocks. The waterfall was well worth the hike. I would recommend giving yourself enough daylight hours to get back. As were were coming back we passed several people going in without much daylight hours. I don't know if they had to turn around or hiked in the dark. Would not recommend in the dark.‬

‪Plenty of other reviews describing the trail - I pulled my phone out the take pictures - amazed to have 3 bars on my phone. I don't recommend burying your nose in your phone, but still a nice surprise.‬

‪Today we hiked Hen Wallow Falls trail and it was very nice. We saw a deer on the trail as well as a couple of really cool trails. The falls are definitely worth the hike. Also, if you go in the morning, the trail is not that crowded. Finally, the trail has a lot of roots and rocks. I highly recommend this hike!‬

‪Did this hike last week during a drought they hadn't got rain for over a week but as you can see the falls were still running. Not quite like it would other times of the year but still a worth while hike. We got there early to take advantage of the morning temps lots of roots and rocks to step over and the trail does climb and descend a few times over the course of the hike. For the short distance I would say its moderate hike to those who occasionally hike. Nice area around the falls to sit and have a water and a sandwich. The Cosby campground was spotless and well maintained. We parked in the Cosby campground picnic area there is a bathroom there and its was spotless cleaned as well. I will be going back this winter and will do this hike again to see if I can catch it when it full and really flowing.‬

‪Great hike if starting by 7 in the morning. Gets crowded after that. Climbing up getting there but downhill on the way back.‬

‪This hike was much less traveled than most, and since we stayed on the Cosby end of Gatlinburg, we could avoid all of the Gat. nonsense with tourists. An easy-to-park spot and a beautiful 2+ mile hike (one way) ends at some lovely falls with plenty of big rocks for sitting int he sun or enjoying lunch. Wear hiking boots (lots of mud and rough terrain) and bring water!‬
