‪long drive, rough road, not much to see as trees cover view the whole way. way longer than an hour unless you have a high clearance vehicle. at the end there is a beautiful creek and bridge, but you can access that from the other direction and not be stuck on a ONE way road for hours!!‬

‪This is a road that will take time to get to the other end, but worth it. Make sure you have plenty of gas and water. I was in my Tucson and a couple places were sketchy as far as rocks jutting and potholes, but it is doable. Very scenic, especially when you get to the stream that runs along side the road. When we got close to the end that is one way, a car came in the wrong way. They said they didn't see the big "do not enter, one way" signs. We had a nice picnic by the stream, wish we had more time to spend here. Make left turn at fish hatchery to go into Cherokee.‬

‪We stayed at Balsom Mountain Campground. The ride to camp ground was beautiful. Watch out for the elk. Several viewing areas. ‬

‪Drove off the Blue Ridge to the picnic area on top of the road. Nice area with a scenic overlook. To our surprise a herd of elk were on the side of the road but had moved on when we returned to the parkway‬

‪Plan on a couple of hours to complete this entire stretch once you leave the Parkway. You can figure on averaging under 10 mph over the length of the dirt portion of the drive, unless you are in a real off-road vehicle or just don't care what you might do to your ride. The road is almost all downhill and other than the water-filled potholes and various other obstacles, it can be driven in almost anything. We saw several family sedans the afternoon we drove the road. We went in October and many of the leaves were down, so the views we better. We saw maybe a half dozen other vehicles the entire length of the road and only small animals. You do run beside a nice stream as you near the bottom, but for the most part you are just enjoying the drive down on a mostly unimproved trail. It is very quiet and serene. Just take your time and enjoy the ride. As others have said, turn left when you reach the end of the road and you will come out in Cherokee. We took a right on 441 and went over to see the elk at the NP visitor center. Not a drive for every taste, but if you want off the beaten path, this one will work just fine. If you like this one then treat yourself to the drive out of the Cataloochee side of the park that goes back to Cosby, TN, just outstanding.‬

‪Some of the reviews below are misleading, like the one saying it takes an hour to make the trip. No way! I just drove this road as fast as I could in a Lexus NX300 SUV, and it took 1 hr 40 min. This road is not like any dirt road I've ever driven. It has many potholes and jagged rocks that could damage your tires. You can't see the jagged rocks due to the shadows and leaves. Most of the trip I was only able to go 7 mph. You could go faster in a real off-road vehicle, pickup truck, etc. I would not attempt it in my Honda Accord. And definitely don't make this trip in a car with low profile tires.

Having said all that, the trip was a pleasant one, although very long. There are some nice photographic opportunities near the end where the road parallels a stream. I wouldn't do it again, because it was a long, torturous trip.‬

‪If you are up for a somewhat off road adventure, this is for you! This primitive road took about an hour to follow. We saw waterfalls and smaller wildlife (birds, chipmunks, and squirrels) on our way down the mountain. It looked like we took our Toyota Camry off roading when we were done (it had been raining before we went). Max speed is 15 MPH depending on your comfortability.

Once we reached the paved road, we were able to capture the mist coming off of the river that runs through. Magnificent!

When you reach the end of the road, be sure to turn left. There aren't any signs to guide you. Notice that the signs also have Cherokee language under the English language!‬

‪A local friend told me about the Balsam Mountain area and the drive. She was right. There was no one around. The drive is a long one, but it's well worth it. It's very peaceful and enjoyable. You drive along side a stream near the end of the route.

One thing to know. There are no signs when you get outside the park boundaries at the end. Turn left when you reach the end of the road by the trout fishery.‬
