Very interesting place. Talked with Herb who is a park volunteer and he was full of great information! Would visit this place again.

I visited here a few years ago before the restoration effort began. I remember tears in my eyes, because it seemed that the historic buildings would soon fall to ruins. But the restoration team has already preserved many of the resort homes along the loop, and the rest are scheduled to be preserved, too. I particularly like the little "mother-in-law house" that sits alongside someone's main home. Be sure to walk over to the creek, too. The main club house along the creek can be rented for special events, such as weddings.

So cool. This was a resort in 1902 that was later abandoned. Historical findings show that humans lived in Elkmont 8000 years ago. You can drive past the buildings if you want but we parked and went in a few of them. Neat!

I have been traveling to the Smoky Mountains my whole life and have never heard of Elkmont! We visited a local winery where we were told by another visitor about this place. She had never been, but had managed to find some information on it online. We looked into it as well and decided why not. THIS was the absolute highlight of our trip! The town is rich in history and though renovations of these cabins have begun, they are simply trying to preserve them, not change them. We walked every cabin that accessible to us and about half way through we stopped a park volunteer to ask a question. Best thing we could have done! He was able to tell us so many facts and even had pictures on his iPad from the time the town was thriving and active! Brought the whole experience to life for us. This is a place we will visit again as renovations are still underway and all cabins couldn't be toured. It is a must see.

The best part of looking at all the old houses was listening to the ranger talk about the history of the area and the houses in particular. It is hard to imagine that this was a "vacation" area for the elite of that day. Definitely worth the drive and the time to walk the street to see the houses being restored.

Very cool spot with beautiful nature all around the abandoned houses. Some of the houses were being restored while we were there, but it wasn't too much of a bother. We walked down to a path where you could cross the river on rocks and explored the area a bit. Super fun!! Would love to come back and learn more about Elkmore history!

I think calling this a ghost town is not correct. It is an area that was basically abandoned once the National Park bought out the residents so there are buildings that are in disrepair but they are working on restoring them. When the restoration is done, I hope to explore the area and get a feeling of the history of Elkmont. It is a little off putting right now with the sounds of generators and power tools but it should be nice when it is done. There are actually 2 different areas, Millionaires Row and Daisy Town which is where they are working now and you can actually drive down the road and see the homes from your car. This is an area that is off the beaten path a little and very worth checking out.

We love Elkmont and its history. We've visited Gatlinburg since the ’80s but just discovered Elkmont in 2009.
Now we’re there with family every year.
Thanks!!!

This was my favorite part of the entire trip!! I love stepping back in time and imagining what it was like to live in the past. They are restoring several houses to what they would have looked like when they were lived in. It was not crowded at all and we were able to take our time looking. There are restrooms on site. I look forward to going back and hopefully exploring the area more.

Carol, I see in your review you were going back with your 80 year old parents. I am traveling with my elderly parents with mobility issues. I was wondering could you drive the paved road at the Elkmont Ghost town?

You can drive on the road... there is a parking area at the beginning and end where there are bathrooms... it will be very difficult if your parent is in a wheelchair to explore the cabins...

Are the buildings (cabins & cottages) labeled or numbered in Elkmont Ghost Town? If we're walking around there would we be able to know what we're looking at or any of the history about a particular building? Also, is there a charge?

There is no charge, it is self guided. They have little informational pedestals around to give you some history. They are currently renovating a lot of the old resort cottages, so I'm sure they will have more labels and information in the future. My cell phone didn't get much of a signal up there, but I was able to pull up Google maps which was very helpful in finding locations of certain buildings and landmarks.

We will be in Gatlinburg 11/18-11/25...will it be open?? Last year during Christmas we tried to get there and the traffic was horrible and hours of waiting, we turned around. Have been wanting to go there for a long time

Next time go threw wears Valley! It takes you over the mountains threw the back side. No traffic at all.
What is the physical address to put in the GPS?

I'm not sure! Sorry. If you get a map from one of the ranger stations it will have Elkmont on it. Once you get to Elkmont go to the campground and follow he road until it dead ends into a parking lot. The town will be to the right of the lot.

We are going at the end of July and my family and I would love to visit this old town. Could you give some directions on how to find it? I hear it's hard to find? THANK YOU!! :)

It was very easy to find. It is about 7 miles from the Sugarland's Visitors Center. You'll see signs for Elkmont Campground. Just follow the signs. It's paved and there is easy access to the houses. It's like taking a step back into time! Well worth the visit! Enjoy your vacation!
