‪We took part of the Panorama to hike over slick rock and drop down to the Bigfoot Trail which we took west across the park completing a backpacking loop (that started on the California Riding and Hiking Trail) from Black Rock Campground. Trail climbs up through rim rock with excellent views. ‬

‪Gorgeous trail. Take the counter clockwise route for easy elevation. But that means that coming back there will be a steep rocky section. If you have poles you should be fine.‬

‪We were told by campers at the Black Rock campground that this time of year (July) there’s no park entrance fee & campground availability is 1st-come basis; since the hiking trail begins right behind campground #30 & it was unoccupied, we parked our car there to begin the hike. Recommendations: drive with GPS directions to Black Rock campground; once inside the campground, stop by the Nature Center to get a map to the campground, then use it to drive to campground #30 & park; use your phone GoogleMap to “plug” your parking spot for backtracking later.

The total hiking distance from behind campground #30 to the actual Panorama Loop (& the loop itself) is about 6.2 miles. Note: since the Panorama Loop doesn’t begin right behind campground #30, there will be about a 30-min hike from #30 to the loop on completely flat ground. Recommendations: from #30 use your phone GoogleMap to navigate to Panorama Loop because this portion has more trails joining & departing from it (most reviews we’d read never mentioned about this 30-min hike that was not part of the Panorama Loop).

Eventually there will be a sign indicating Panorama Loop begins here; there will also be occasional wooden posts with “PL” (Panorama Loop) to help you hike in the right direction. Note: while researching info about this particular loop for its (obvious) panoramic view of the area, we’d read that some people recommended starting the hike counter-clockwise (i.e. to the right); that is because if you begin the hike to the left, you will hike uphill 1st to get to the top; then the 2nd half is an easy downhill stroll. The uphill gradient is nothing to sweat about (no pun intended) because there are no rocks to climb over…simply a steeper hill than the other side. All that said, it’s your choice…go left to hike uphill 1st then downhill 2nd, or go right for a more casual hike 1st then steeper downhill 2nd. I wish that reviewers had been more specific about my above descriptions because personally I would have chosen the steeper uphill hike 1st (i.e. to the left 1st) because it’s easier on the knees to hike uphill than to have to constantly slow your downhill momentum (harder on the knees). Note: there is no cell phone signals but phone GPS will work just fine. Recommendations: before beginning the actual loop, use GoogleMap to pull up your current GPS position; you will see that the map has a dotted-outline of the actual loop; then turn off your GPS locator (to save phone battery). Occasionally switch your GPS back on to see your current position again; if you’re on the right trail, your dot will be somewhere on the dotted-outline.

We definitely behaved like “stupid & uninformed” hiking tourists by doing this at high noon in July in a desert! But believe us we were well-informed & had more than enough water & snacks for the hike…& sun block; I even had a wristwatch compass to keep my cardinal bearings. Note: most websites & reviews indicated it takes 3-4 hrs to hike the entire trail; we casually did it in 2.5 (with multiple stops to hydrate & snack, & a good 15 min at the top for photos). Recommendations: bring backpack with plenty of water & snacks; use sun block; wear sunglasses, hats & loose long-sleeve athletic shirts & good hiking shoes.‬

‪Access the trail from the Black Rock Canyon Campground. Trail starts either near entrance or at campsite 30. Parking near nature center is free as is access. We paid to drive through Joshua tree and hike at other areas. But there were no access fees at campground/nature center. This trail is about 6 miles and gets steep at about mile three, if you take the loop clockwise. I think that is better than having steep descent, but use your own preference. Trail is well maintained and marked pretty well, just do not cross rocks placed across trail and you will stay on track. We really enjoyed walking among the Joshua trees and other vegetation. Saw several new species of birds for us. Enjoyed a picnic under a large Joshua Tree that is in the middle of the trail on down slope (the way we walked).
We departed at 0840, which was about an hour too late for the early June heat. Three of us took 8 quarts of water/gatorade and drank almost all of it.‬
