Despite its name, this is not a particularly scenic trail. It winds back and forth in an area of low vegetation to a rocky outcropping that overlooks a valley. Not much to see on the way there, and pollution and smoke prevent you from seeing much when you arrive. The top is somewhat interesting in a cap of granite where you can scramble to find various vantages. A moderate hike, little shade, no facilities.

This hike came recommended to us by a park ranger. We headed here from Lodgepole Campground - about a 45 minute drive up Generals Highway. This hike is located on the other side of the road from the King's Canyon Overlook. It is a short hike - two miles out and back with a reasonable bit of elevation gain (420 feet). You are rewarded with wonderful views of the King's Canyon in a panorama that spans more than 180 degrees from the vista section.

I decided to due this hike to capture the Sunrise and I was extremely happy with the decision. The trail was well defined and easy to follow even in the dark. The parking lot and trail head were easy to locate as well. There wasn't too much elevation involved and still provided great views.

The Buena Vista Peak hike is 2 miles RT (3.2 km). It took us (seniors) 40 minutes to go up and 33 minutes to come down. It was windy and chilly on top, but we found a large rock in a more protected area and spread out to enjoy the sunshine. The views on top were beautiful on the clear day that we hiked. You are at 7603 feet on top! You are out in the open a lot on this hike, so be sure to have sunscreen sunglasses, and a hat that won't fly off. There were patches of snow when we were there the last week of May. This hike is located off Generals Highway and closer to the Grant Grove end of the highway.

Deze hike is erg rustig, toen wij deze deden was er letterlijk niemand anders. De hike begint makkelijk, maar wordt steeds steiler. Het pad is in het begin vrij duidelijk, later wordt dit wat vager. Toch zijn wij zonder verkeerd te lopen op de top gekomen, waar je een prachtig uitzicht hebt.

Small parking area at the trail start. 1 mile up, up, up till you get to the peak at the top. Make sure you walk around the rocks at the top to see all the views. Great place for photos!!

The view if very nice, although there are better views in the park. However, if you want to do a small hike, this is for you. The trail is not marked at all and it is very difficult to know where the trail goes. We saw about 50 small lizards on this trail and they are running all over the place which was cool.

This is a great short hike with not much elevation gain to great views. It is worth it to spend a little time at the top to wander around on all the big boulders

We came up with a group from the nearby Monticeto Lodge just as the sun was setting. It's not a tough trail until the very top. And, yes, you can easily lose your way, even with an experienced guide. It's not that going up is hard, it's coming back down (especially after sunset) that is night impossible with no marked trail on the sheer rock bald at the top (the side-path stones don't get you all the way up to the top).
But we eventually got down and having seen the sun set up there and doing the bottom portion by artificial light, all was good.

First of all, I am a little confused about the comments about having a hard time finding it to the top. When you get to what appears to be the top and you can peer over the mountain for the first time into the valley, the trail continues off to your right. It is not as well marked here because it is mostly granite on top and not dirt, but there are rock markers that lead the way. Even without the markers if you just keeping walking up in that direction, you will find the top in a relatively short amount of time. We did this hike with a 3 year old and a 6 year old and the 6 year old lead the way!
That being said, when you make it to the top, there are some slight drop offs so it you have little ones, you definitely want to keep a close eye on them. Other than that though, the views are great! We went on a cloudy/foggy day last but the clouds cleared a bit so we could still see the views here and there.
We also really love all the boulders along the way. The kids would continually jump off trail to go exploring so they had a lot of fun. I would highly recommend the hike for families or anyone who wants a relatively short and mellow hike with great views.
