‪Don't go looking for the Big Stump once you are on the trail, because the sign on the trail refers to the stump as Mark Twain. But there is no warning and you could wander for hours looking for Big Stump without knowing this. The Big Stump Trail is poorly marked, so be careful. And don't be misled into believing that there are remnants of a sawmill, because there aren't. In fact, other than the fact that you can walk up steps on the stump, the whole hike is anti-climactic. Also take a picture of the trail map at the trailhead, because the easiest (less elevation) way out of the trail is not back the same way you go in, but it can't be described here. You have to be on the trail. Otherwise, lots of the same big trees you see everywhere else in the park. Picnic tables, bathrooms and water at the trailhead, where there is also a large parking lot.‬

‪At the bare minimum, parallel park in the little pullout on the side of the road just beyond the Big Stump Entrance to Kings Canyon National Park. A very short hike down the hill will bring you to the Mark Twain Stump, the famous one with the stairs. It's truly incredible to see just how big these things really are! You and twenty of your closest friends (in a non-COVID year) could easily fit on a freakin' tree stump!

If you have more time, park at the Big Stump Picnic area and take the trail downhill to the meadow below. When you come to a small fork in the road, take the path to the right, which will bring you to Shattered Log, which is a really cool way to hike across a trail! There are multiple big stumps to climb on, and at the end of the trail you will come to the Mark Twain Stump from this end. I know the trail crosses the road and continues in a big loop around, but we chose to turn around and come back, this time taking the other fork through the "Feather Bed" and looping around on the opposite side of the meadow. Old Adam tree was particularly gnarly and cool.

When you get back to Big Stump Picnic Area, there are fairly new concrete tables under covered canopies, and also a fairly new restroom with electricity and running water. A picnic there in the shade was a nice way for us to wrap up our hike.

You will see many hikes that show you skyscraper Sequoias, but this was the only one that showed us so many unique and varied stumps. Don't miss it!‬

‪We took the loop hike around the stumps. It was sad to see them, knowing the the giant trees were taken down.

The hike is fairly easy. You even get to climb a short flight of stairs to go on top of one of the stumps.‬

‪Really great trail to walk - fairly flat and easy, with opportunities to see some wildlife (small furries and mule deer in our case). We went over the shattered log on the way, also very interesting.

It was quite sad to see the stump - humans chopping down an old, beautiful tree in its prime can never be a wise, compassionate or kind thing. However, standing up on the stump does give you a good perspective of just how giant the girth/width of the trees are, so it is interesting in that sense.

A really enjoyable walk and experience.‬

‪It is hard to imagine how big this tree stump is! How huge the tree must have been! Been there for a long time too!‬

‪Its so hard to see these trees maybe even older than the general sherman felled to prove that they exist. These stumps look so old. People cut them down to prove to the east coast that these freak trees do exist. Some lumberjacks used to compete to see how fast they can cut these trees. Its so important to see this part of the park as it sheds light on the stupidity of human beings. 2000 years to grow couple hours to cut!‬

‪Just past the Big Stump entrance station, park at the pullout on the right, then cross the road and walk less than 100 yrds to the mark twain stump. It is amazing to get to stand on the stump and realize how big these trees are. And how sad it is that we cut it down just to send pieces to museums. Definitely a highlight, but we were glad we did not walk the entire trail.‬

‪Big Stump grove is a few miles outside of the Grant Grove Village on Hwy 180. Here you will find a fair sized carpark, picnic tables, bathrooms and two mile loop trail leading to the meadow where you will see quite a few giant sequoia stumps, the result of logging in the late 19th century.

We walked the trail in April. Much of it was not yet cleared of fallen trees from the winter season and certain sections still under snow. We walked all the way to the Mark Twain tree, which is a giant stump with a staircase, allowing you to climb to the levelled trunk of the old tree to better experience its size.

At this point, snowmelt had caused a stream to run through the meadow cutting us off from the rest of this loop trail. So we turned and went back to the carpark.

In the end, sort of sad seeing so many massive tree stumps and reading the information panels describing logging in the area. What a shame to have lost the majority of the grove of sequoias here. We were happy to see a few survivors of the logging era amongst the forest during our hike here.‬

‪To visit the basin you must walk the two-mile loop. The first part of the trail descends about 200 feet before it levels out. The path around the basin is easy and enlightening. Do not miss the Mark Twain, which is found along a short spur just off the main path.‬

‪After touring the big live trees it's sobering to visit the Big Stump Loop Trail. Highlights include the Mark Twain Stump and other large stumps you can explore. The trails are well worn but not well marked. There is not much fear about getting lost as the area is pretty tight and trail Spurs generally dead end at a Stump or other cool feature. Described as a 2 mile loop this is a good place for families and Sequoia enthusiasts.‬
