‪My husband and I loved this hike! The only access to the trail is via boat. The trailhead has a large dock with room for several boats. We were the only ones on the trail during the morning of our visit. The park service lists the hike as strenuous. I’d considerate it more moderate. The trail is a little over 4 miles round trip. We spent a little over three hours total in hiking, including about 30 minutes relaxing and fishing on the shore of Locator Lake. Since VNP visitor’s centers are currently closed due to COVID-19, we couldn’t get a key to access the canoes kept by the lake. We’ll look forward to a paddle on another visit. My husband did hook one fish from the shore. Wear good hiking shoes as you are up and down several rock outcroppings over the length of the trail. The trail is primarily through the woods and crosses several wetlands areas. It is narrow in some areas but always easy to follow. The elevation changes and the vistas across woods, wetlands and the lake made for a delightful morning. We’ll do this hike again on our next visit. A bonus- vault toilets are available at the trailhead and at Locator Lake. There is also a picnic table and fire ring at Locator Lake if you want to carry in a picnic.‬

‪The locator lake hike is ok. It’s only accessible by boat, and the dock is small.

There is a restroom at the trail head. The trail can be muddy, and buggy, so come prepared.

You can hear lots of wildlife, especially beavers.‬

‪You boat to the trail head and it's 2-3 hours one way. Great views and lovely forest trail leads to a lake at the interior of the Kabetogma Peninsula. There are canoes and rowboats to use on the interior lake, but must be rented/reserved and key picked up from the Kabetogama Visitors' Center. To reserve a head of time: go to recreation.gov --> search for Voyageur National Park --> camping permits --> select 'backcountry canoe/boat only' from drop down menu --> and then select Day Use rowboat/canoe from "campsite" drop down menu.

Bring bug spray! Vault toilet at trail head on both ends. I would rate it a moderate hike. Some steep uphills, but also easy flats. Pretty rocky, so I had to watch my footing often. There are cool board bridges set up across the marshes. We saw beavers and a dam. A rewarding hike!‬

‪Dock your boat at the trail head & prepare for a lovely hike on this remote trail. The closest public access is at the Woodenfrog State Campground on the shore of Lake Kabetogama. Highlights are the beaver dam and the hiking trail has beautiful views and ends at a pristine lake that can be canoed. But plan ahead and get the key at the visitor center if you want to canoe it! So peaceful and quiet, we only saw 2 other people in the 4 hours we were on the trail. Be quiet and take more time and a good chance to see a moose in some of the marsh lowland area. Approximately 80 moose are reported to live on the Kabetogama Peninsula.

This would definitely be considered a moderate hiking trail and plan enough time accordingly. Typically I would do a 2 mile trail in about an hour, we gave ourselves 2.5 hours to stop for a snack and it felt pushed and we could have used a little more time. For this steady hiking and you may want to plan to take breaks and photos give yourself 3-4 hours (or leave your plans open afterwards so that you can stay longer if you'd like to do so).

This trail has a public restroom at the trail head and also at Locator Lake- no running water. A picnic table at Locator lake too.

The trail is well marked and in places quite rocky with steeper inclines and root ruts. Bugs can come & go, so I recommend you wear long sleeves and pants even in the thick of summer to help fend off the bugs. A hat with bug net would be wise to bring, but we actually had no need of one and did not wear bug spray either. So you might want to wait to "dope up" with bug repellent.

I highly recommend this hike and there is definite bragging rights when you can't drive right to the trail head, but need to boat to hike! Happy Trails!!‬

‪We took the hike to the lake and it was very buggy. My friend got eaten up - welts on back of legs etc. I luckily had long pants and shirt sleeves so didn't get bit as bad - just a couple on the hands. But got bit by horsefly on lip and it swelled up. bugs kept going for my eyes. The view at the end is nice but once you stood still the bugs attacked. Plus the visitors centers closed on Sunday and Monday and we did Monday so couldn't use the canoe in the smaller interior lake like we had planned.‬

‪Pack plenty of water and a snack for your hike. You'll go through bogs, beaver dams, hilltops and end at Locator Lake. Before you go go to the Kabetogama Visitor Center to rent a canoe to paddle around in while you are there. You should also pack your swimsuit and take advantage of a great lake to simw in.‬

‪I am in my late forties, my son and I hiked into Locator for a day of fishing. The hike was long for me although my son (22) handled it with ease. My son and I caught lots of nice northern, several around 30" and had one 40 plus right up to the canoe. My son used a spinner for awhile and caught several very nice large mouth bass. Worth the hike. We canoed through several lakes and back during our stay.‬
