I visited St Nectan’s church whilst on my way to Hartland Quay. This imposing building, known as the “Cathedral of North Devon”, has a 39m tower so is hard to miss.
The church is dedicated to St Nectan: a hermit and missionary associated with early Christian sites in the fifth and sixth centuries. The current church building dates from 1360, with the font belonging to the previous building. The font is thought to date from 1170.
The most striking feature of the church is its painted wagon roof. Also of interest is that the church is the burial place of Mary Norton who wrote the children's book “The Borrowers” (something I can remember seeing dramatized on the TV many years ago).
The church was well worth the quick stop.

Wow what an amazing church built I believe in 1368!
It truly is beautiful inside an out and only a stones throw from hartland harbour and hotel.
I attended as guest to a wedding and what a wonderful place for it to have been held.
The vicar Jane skinner and her team were so kind and friendly to everyone. It was a very special service.
I found out afterwards at the reception held at the superb anchor pub in hartland ( see separate review ) that this church relies solely on donations from locals and charities - unbelievably nothing at all from c of e!!!!
The only way they can keep it safe and keep it going is from hours and hours of the poor vicar and her team writing to charities detracting from the time they would like to spend helping the people who truly benefit from their support which in this day and age is so truly needed and valued.
So please can people to leave a donation when you visit!!
This is a real heritage jewel and in my mind would be devastating if lost.

Wished we’d had more time. Well worth a stop even if just to look at. It has the tallest tower in Devon. Very large church considering where it is.

Wow, wow, wow. Finally the real deal. Stunning huge church far bigger than expected, tallest Tower in Devon. Amazing screens, ceiling and rustic wood pews. Grave stones back to 1650's, lots of connections to Hartland Abbey in the valley below. Amazing graveyard, old old graves, with many stories. A fine example so do not miss it.

The outside of the church is very impressive with it's huge tower, and the inside is pretty impressive too, there's also loads of information about it's history.
When we went some ladies from the congregation were serving tea, coffee and a selection of gorgeous homemade cakes which we all thoroughly enjoyed. They also provided some activities to keep the children interested. Definitely worth dropping by if you are in the area.

What am amazing church. Obviously you'll see the huge tower from the outside but do go in.
It has a wonderful ceiling, a 16th century large rood screen and somewhat bizarrely, a chair that Emperor Haile Selassie sat in on the mid 1930s! (He had been exiled in Bath).
Don't miss the small staircase up into a room with a copy of the Magna Carta! ( Immediately opposite the entrance, next to the north door.

We passed this church a few times on our various journeys so decided to stop and have a closer look. The church has the highest tower in Devon and is quite beautiful inside, parts of it are very old but that adds to its character.

I didn;t get the chance to go inside and see the church since the car park was full but this is one enormous church for what seems like such a small parish - until of course you realise that it covers the wider area too.

Why such a huge church in this tiny hamlet? ... because it's the parish church for nearby Hartland ... and it's on the Hartland Abbey estate (great to visit the house and garden). Dubbed the cathedral of North Devon ... it certainly is a solid and interesting piece of architecture and it contains mainy intersting memorials and gravestones. Great as part of a circular walk from Hartland Quay to Docton Mill and back.
