Held on Saturday afternoons on the edge of the Shonajhuri forest, this market is a riot of colors!! Clothes and Sarees; Accessories (and being made to order right there by artisans); handicraft items and so much more and prices which is maybe half or even less from the cities. One feels bad to even bargain because the asking price is so low :-).
And not to miss the Santhal dance groups, whom you can join and dance to your hears content to the beautiful rhythm.

Also known as Sonajhuri Haat is a typically modern-day village 'haat' or market place. Variety of local handicrafts. Watch out specially for foldable teapoys and stools for a cheap deal. Light bargain required. The artisans are quite fair it was felt. Groups of locals do the traditional dance where you can also participate for a fee. Its supposed to be open only on Saturdays but many vendors are there the whole week. Before buying go around to know the prices. And car parking is a pain esp in the evenings. And never park in the vicinity of the haat, and definitely not on a weekend. You wont be able to take out the car because the hawkers lay their wares everywhere right from the road.

Held on weekends, this market assemble weavers, embroiders, potters, etc in a beautiful setting of red earth and tall trees. Santal groups of dancers and musicians perform here and there. It is a most delightful sight. A great place to spend the day, have a picnic or have lunch at the restaurant.
The prices are much lower than elsewhere in India.

Just returned from the Sonajhuri after spending Thursday to Monday , The Haat now a week-end affair. Exhibitors are camping since Friday noon culminating on the Saturdays grand show (noon to evening).Few sellers continue camping till Sunday, for late comers. The beauty is to roam for tit bits ,Baul Songs&Dances ,and Folk dance by many local villagers .Street foods ,tea, cold drinks, water are available in abundance. In and around accommodations are available but better to stay in the Bolpur city and come by local transport .Though the Saturday is the pick day ,one can visit on Friday afternoon & Sunday morning for marketing of local handicrafts cheaper than the permanent shops in Bolpur. Be ready with currency of 10,20,50,& 100 only.Because of many shops the selling by individuals are very limited.
Hope you understand my narration for lay and casual visitors. Thanks.

The Haat is a big attraction. It's only on Saturdays from 2 pm.So ideally spend the weekend in shantiniketan of u r traveling so that u don't miss the Haat. As it draws huge crowds there is no entry placed for vehicles from 12pm to 6 pm.
