Another lovely National Trust property. William Morris lived in the house for 5 years. Booked the tour which was very informative. Stuart did a wonderful job. Lots of interesting features and stories behind the building and its contents. The Red House is in a residential area but once you're inside, you're back in the 1800s. Beautiful gardens, well maintained. Only open Thurs - Sat and must book. Short bus ride from Bexleyheath Station. Well worth a visit if interested in William Morris and his work.

Strongly recommended visiting when it reopens again next year. I was fortunate enough to book on one of the tours today. Olive was fantastic and very knowledgeable, her passion not all things historical really shone through. The second hand book store is also fabulous to buy gifts and most second hand books are only 50p! I hope the National Trust reopen the cafe next year as it would be nice to enjoy a longer time here when the weather is kindness. If you haven’t been to the Walthamstow William Morris Museum I strongly recommend visiting there also! ❤️

Not great
We had to book on a tour of the house which felt quite rushed, we were hurried along to get through without enough time in each room to absorb the detail. When I asked to go back to read the information in the back room downstairs we were told we were not allowed back in after our tour. The tour guide was knowledgeable. We also didn't get to see the 4 x 15 minute projections showing life in the house as outlined in the brief guide leaflet.
No NT cafe !!
Toilets outside
The scaffolding (outside the whole of the back of the building) is going to be moved to the front shortly.
There's a second hand bookshop in the lovely garden with some nice mugs and pottery and postcards... cash only.
It says its 15 minutes walk from the station but it was a lot longer into the deepest suburbs of Bexleyheath. We spent ages getting there from central London and left disappointed.
There's 3 original pieces of furniture and some decorative elements but if you want the feel of a Morris family house you'd be much better visiting Kelmscott Manor in Oxfordshire which has tons of original and repro decoration, lovely grounds, staff and a tea room!

Tucked away from the far-beaten track in Bexleyheath. It can be quite a trip to get there without a car but is worth the journey. The beautiful gardens and the stunning house are the first sights you can see. Exploring the outside before entering the tour is go time for photos and finding hidden areas. Finding the well was a particular highlight. The tour staff are passionate and give an in-depth tour of the house that provides a fascinating history of William Morris. The tour lasts a good 40 minutes and tells William's story well. The tour costs a reasonable £11, but there are often free tickets available in the media for the National Trust. Once the tour ends you can continue to explore and visit the second-hand bookstore. Unfortunately, there are no refreshments available, so come prepared with drink and food. On a sunny day, it is a magical visit.

The Red House was William Morris' first home as a married man. It was buit to his specifications and has some of the original furniture and fittings, including stained glass windows. There is a large garden which was also part of the project. Several of the pieces of furniture were intended for the spaces they occupy and therefore not taken when they moved. It has a "home-made" feel about it.
At present there are only guided tours of the house which must be booked in advance. The guides are knowledgable.
I did not feel there was enough in the house to make a return visit likely for some time.

Very pretty but not good. They seem to think COVID is still rife (May 2023). Not as good as it used to be,

This is a totally beautiful place to visit. My parents and I had a great tour of the house and the gardens were lovely too. A big shout out to the lovely volunteers there today as well, so helpful and nice.

Somewhere I really wanted to go and it didn't disappoint.
Tucked away on the suburban streets of London this was a fantastically interesting house with quirks and much to interest. The wife and I had a really great experience thanks to the great volunteers and staff who led us through the visit. Apologies for not remembering the names of the brilliant people we met.
Certainly worth booking to visit!

You need to book this visit / tour but it is so worth while. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and interesting. Apart from the house being very interesting with lots of ordinal works of William Morris the garden is very pretty.

How long do people spend at Red House
كُتب بتاريخ 22 يونيو 2019
I think 60 to 90 minutes should be OK for the house. The garden tour takes about 20 minutes.

Thinking of visiting the Red House and wondered if I can park in a side road near on a weekday? Thanks
كُتب بتاريخ 10 أبريل 2018
There is limited parking on the roads around the red house but watch out for the parking restrictions. It can get very busy especially if it’s a sunny weekend

Think they do a light lunch between 12-2. And tea\coffee & assorted cakes the rest of the time they are open

Hi, how long in advance should I book a guided tour?
thanks
كُتب بتاريخ 10 فبراير 2016
I booked the week before, but some people arrived same day and came on the tour. I did the first tour of the day as wanted to visit other places in the area too.

How would we get to Bexleyheath using public transportation. We would be coming from KingsCross/St. Pancras station.
كُتب بتاريخ 19 مارس 2015
Hi
Same answer as above to get to Bexleyheath. When you get to Bexleyheath take the 422, B11, B12 or B15 bus to Upton Road/Broadway. It is then an 8 minute walk to the Red House. It is well signposted.
