Having used NineOneSix as the sole provider of winter skills training for the University of Stirling Mountaineering Club since 2010, I can say that the persistent high level of instruction has allowed this arrangement to endure every year since.
The instructors put specific emphasis on ensuring that members are practised at safe travel above the snowline, whilst also tailoring training to meet individual goals of each person. This over the past few years has noticeably increased the knowledge and general state of practice of winter mountaineering within USMC. Due to this success instruction from NineOneSix is now an embedded part of our Winter Meet, which is the largest trip the club runs each year.

We were looking for someone to not only guide us on a decent loop in Torridon but who also has the local knowledge to be able to suggest other routes and provide tips for future trips to the area.
We did a bit of research and Nine One Six came up. Did a bit more research looking into Jim's experience and qualifications and he seems to know his stuff! As others have said, he is highly qualified, trains the local MRT and has edited a book on the area. That should do it...
Spoke to Jim Sutherland on the phone and instantly knew we were not only in good hands but he's a top bloke. He gave us a couple of available dates, discussed what we wanted and our skill levels and fitness and went through several options.
Fast forward to the day and while it was wet, windy, cold (in August) AND the midges were out in force we had a superb day. He'd taken on board my sons fitness and skill level and had the perfect loop of Beinn Damh planned.
We started off having a coffee in the Torridon Inn, our meeting point, then headed out along the estate trails by the coast for a nice loop that bypassed the main road, we headed down a couple of short technical trails which were great fun and also gave Jim and idea of our abilities. We then headed over the road and the real adventure began.
The climbs were varied and even when slogging along the side of Loch Damh which was muddy and wet, it was still technically challenging so great fun. The views were amazing and the descent back down to Torridon Inn were brilliant. Varying from loose and rocky which really kept us on our toes to great big slabs of rock to traverse and then later on a lovely rocky section through the trees.
As a qualified UKMBLA Level II Leader myself and fairly experienced rider (although I do seem to fall off a lot and seem to spend a lot of time hitting trees) I was extremely impressed with Jim's guiding. It's not just about leading a group but also having local knowledge and we were treated to stacks of snippets about the area ranging from the geology of the area, the history of people and places, other quality trails, other trails that looked amazing but were not worth doing due to the conditions (and this is why we booked Jim, there's nothing worse than arriving in an area you don't know and riding the wrong trail when you could have been somewhere else having the time of your life).
Once back in the Torridon Inn, Jim got in some lovely warming coffees and went through the ride, asked for feedback and spent time showing us other good loops on the map. All good quality info for our next trip.
All in all an excellent day. Jim is a top bloke and knows his stuff. I will keep in touch and we are also both following each other on Strava. If you are looking for an experienced Mountain Bike guide in the area give him a shout. You won’t be disappointed.

Jim took our two boys rock climbing on slabs with the most amazing views. They had a great session - so did I and I was only watching! He also led us on an amazing family bike ride in the afternoon - stunning views and great company. Many thanks to Jim for the warmth of the welcome and the fun of the day.

Have just had a week's hiking the Torridon Munros, in a group of four, with Jim Sutherland as our guide. Jim is a top notch guide. Not only does he have the obvious technical skills and local knowledge (he is, after all, the training officer for the local mountain rescue team, and a co-author of the Cicerone guide to the area), but he is personable and takes the time and trouble to address clients' particular issues. I have now completed all the Munros in this area, which would not have happened without a guide, and Jim is the obvious choice for this area.

We (Ben, Bobby, Mark and Will) enjoyed a wild day learning some winter skills in Coire an Laoigh on Beinn Eighe in March. The weather was aweful however this did not put a dampener on the spirits of our fantastic guide Duncan.
A day which we all loved and will remember forever evern though violent gusts of wind carrying machinegun fire hail peppered us all day!!!

Always wanted to do the Liathach ridge and Jim was the perfect guide. Friendly, loads of great advice, challenging route choice and good banter. Would definitely recommend him and use Nineonesix for other stuff.

I've just returned from a week in Torridon. My Highlight were the two days spent with Jim (within the Torridon Walking Festival, on 12 and 13 Oct), first being introduced to the Basics of Scrambling, on a lovely day out in Diabaig. I learnt a lot in a short time, helped by Jim’s enormous experience and skills, as well as his ability to suss out what us clients were capable of, and what we still needed to learn. But most importantly he kept stretching us to get the most out of the time available, while always providing a safe, relaxed and fun atmosphere.
Then the next day we put the training to excellent use on a Mountaneering Day on Beinn Eighe. Again: I got maximum learning experience and enjoyment out of it.
For years I wanted to get some training to feel more comfortable on the inevitable scrambles on the Scottish tops, but also to get a base for enhancing my abilities to take on tougher challenges in future. Glad I’ve finally done it. Couldn’t have been with a better instructor.

As part of our recent trip to the area, I booked through "nineonesix " to take on Beinn Alligin. Jim was excellent in monitoring the weather & recommended moving the walk back a day to take advantage of the clearing weather and it paid off superbly, with a beuatiful clear morning and stunning 360 degree views. Because of the change, Jim was booked elsewhere and arranged for Melanie to act as guide instead, travelling down from Gairloch for an 0700 start!!.
She did a fantastic job of getting me to the top- and back again and was great company for the morning. We plan on returning to the area in a few years, and will certainly use 916 again.
