‪My wife and I love the peace and tranquillity of the Newt. May we also give a special tribute for Charlotte at the Gate House. She is always a breath of fresh air and a great ambassador as she and the other staff are the first port of call and sets the tone for your visit. We always ware a mask at the reception as a sign of respect for the staff as they ware one to protect us.
Also Maria at the Story of Gardening makes the best cups of coffee on site and is always very polite and friendly.
I don’t know how much they are paid but they all deserve a bonus for there hard work and kindness during these hard times.
I’m sure most visitors would agree.‬

‪lovely gardens, not so helpful staff and overpriced drinks
really not worth £48 membership fees

‪We stayed at the main hotel for two nights.

What we liked:
- Everything was beautifully designed and presented. Vast sums of money must have been spent renovating the hotel and grounds and it is all very new and shiny. The spa was especially delightful.
- Lots to do on site. Lovely walks around the grounds and gardens.
- Service. We had a problem with our initial room (room 2). It was above the bar and we could hear bass from the music from 12pm onwards which was very annoying. The staff member at reception arranged for us to move to a new room and was very efficient and helpful.
- Food. Two great dinners at the Botanical Rooms and a lovely lunch at the garden cafe.

What could have been improved:
- Breakfasts. I’m not fully vegan but I often choose plant based options - there were no plant based options on the menu, which was disappointing. There also weren’t enough newspapers on offer for guests (and so option to have one delivered to your room).
- No sommelier and limited wine list. Given the prices of some of the wines it would have been good to have someone who could offer advice on them. There was a heavy emphasis on flogging wines from The Newt’s partner estates in Italy and South Africa which got quite annoying.
- More honesty about Hadspen House’s connections with the slave trade. Portraits of the previous owners of the house, the Hobhouse family, adorned the lounge but the short history of house provided in our room failed to mention that they bought the house with a fortune acquired through the kidnap, transportation and sale of their fellow humans. We can’t change history but we can be truthful about it and stop brushing the unpleasant parts under the carpet.‬

‪We had a stay at The Newt for 4 days over the Christmas period. Magical, absolutely epic in every way. The house and grounds are so comfortable and welcoming.. throughout we felt absolutely at ease and genuinely happy. The spa/ pool on both sites are superb( we stayed in the Farmyard this time- arrived by Golf buggy and what fun that was) and special mention to everyone single meal we ate.. truly delicious and full of technique and skill and local finest ingredients. But above all of that.. it was the staff.. you guys are the real difference. I’d love to mention names but it’s almost impossible to single anyone out. One of my favourite Christmas periods in absolutely one of my favourites places in the world. Very, very impressive guys.. a huge thank you for having us! Jamie, Becky, Alfie and Monty‬

‪Sadly disappointing after many lovely past visits. Food good but service and muck up on our order.
Our reservation was for 3 adults at 10.45am, restaurant was about 3rd full. Sat down, ordered drinks. Waited 15 mins for them to arrive then ordered breakfast. Asked for it in two parts:
Cinnamon roll, toasted roll, and granola to start with followed by field mushroom on sourdough crumpet and 2 English type breakfasts with sour dough toast. After waiting another 20 minutes the young waitress turns up with the two cooked English breakfast! I explained we hadn’t had our ‘breakfast starter’ yet. The waitress went to the kitchen and came back and said the chef had got food in the wrong order and would go and get the rest. She came back with the toasted roll and cinnamon bun but no granola! Again I said I had ordered the granola to have as a breakfast starter before the cooked order. The waitress went off again saying it was on its way! I explained that by the time I had eaten my granola the rest of my family would have finished their complete breakfast and I would be eating my field mushrooms on my own. Reason chef got muddled and they were very busy! Still only 3rd full. In hindsight we should have sent the two English breakfasts back and insisted it came with my field mushrooms and after we had eaten our breakfast starter as we had stipulated when ordering. I finished my granola and then waited another 30 minutes for my field mushroom dish to arrive (after asking twice). So I sat and ate them with my family looked on.

I appreciated the gesture of not being charge for the field mushrooms but the whole experience of enjoying a leisurely breakfast with my family in beautiful surroundings was far from satisfactory.‬

‪The Newt - recommend staying for at least two nights as The Newt’s grounds are very large with plenty of activities.

Our room (Hadspen Cosy Room) - spacious room, bright and modern. Convenient location to the main restaurant and bar and only short walk to the spa.

Dinner at botanical rooms was great and recommend farmyard kitchen for a more casual lunch (can drive a buggy to get there). live music in the drawing room before dinner while enjoying one of Newt’s cyders

Large number of activities and walks to enjoy - cyder tour and tasting, garden tour, cyder farm tour, story of gardening. The Spa area is great (only downside is that limited to 45 mins per visit)

The staff and service was slick and professional‬

‪After a long awaited wait to visit its a shame it wasn’t better. Staff were really not that friendly and certainly didn’t make us feel welcome.
Food was ok but always luke warm which was disappointing. Not sure we will be rushing back.‬

‪As Annual Members we visit on a regular basis. However the service the cafe was extremely poor yesterday. We waited 20 mins in the cold to order coffee and cake and then waited again while a young cafe assistant made our drinks.
Whole operation very poorly managed and not acceptable. In the end we were presented with 2 luke warm Mochas

‪Having been a dedicated member of The Newt for over a year now, I was extremely disappointed by the customer service we were met with today. Having seen a sign advertising mulled cider for sale, my mother asked one of the bartenders if there was any left. The girl laughed and then, avoiding eye contact, said under her breath, "Ugh... I don't know", and then proceeded to continue with what she was doing, not offering my mother any further assistance or finding out if there was, in fact, any cider left. This abysmal customer service is not what one expects when paying a monthly membership for this establishment and £10 for the drinks, (which we eventually got after having to ask another member of staff). Whilst the grounds are amazing, the abrupt customer service really lets The Newt down and taints the place as a whole. Customer service really makes or breaks one's experience, and ours was certainly broken.‬

‪A wonderful 4 day visit to the Newt gave us time to explore and see most things , bearing in mind there are 4 seasons we will defiantly need to revisit, we have only done the winter 25% of the experience.
A lot of time effort and money has been put into the Newt, and it shows, it’s Disney level of attention applied to the gardens, shop, cafes. There are a lot of things to see, excellent places to eat and numerous tours. We really enjoyed the Honey tasting and learned a lot about honey , it was a bit surprising that there was so much depth to it. Like most things here it’s been considered, planned and executed well.
The Story of Gardening is another really good display and activity, we allowed a couple of hours to do it, but 3 or 4 hours would do it more justice. Tip the cakes in the cafe at the Story of Gardening are some of the best on the estate.
There are nice shops with some expensive items, but also some surprisingly good value purchases too.
Staff are excellent, genuine, helpful, engaged , real, they make the experience better still.
Some things are well labelled , well described, others are not. A route planner would be helpful if you are limited for time.
The best tip I could give you is to allow enough time or just limit what you do and come back for more , it’s not a place to rush around, some parts are quite steep too.
We are really looking forward to returning when the gardens are in bloom.
Defiantly a place you should visit.‬
