Luogo estremamente suggestivo dove domina l'acqua.

Lovely formal Italian style garden set on various levels with many fountains. Very impressive. Set in parkland. Many steps.

This is perhaps not the most showy garden of the Renaissance (Villa d'Este in nearby Tivoli probably surpasses it in magnificence) but it's certainly a "canon" of such gardens: with it all subsequent "water architectures", from Versailles to Peterhof, will reckon.
This happens because the garden is typically Renaissance, not only for the exaltation of regular geometric shapes, but also for the richness of the allegories to which the garden alludes.
Allegory, as is known, is a rhetorical figure through which the author expresses a hidden meaning, different from the literal one. Here the physical datum is a set of architectures, sculptures, basins and bodies of water harmoniously gathered together. The allegories are consequences of the guiding idea, according to which human ingenuity exerts its action on nature - and in particular on water - bending it to its will, which is oriented towards "civilization" purposes.
The water is therefore here not a mere accompanying or embellishing factor, but it's itself architecture; and it's also a founding element of the allegory.
In addition, the various parts of the garden would perhaps symbolize in succession the four elements of water, earth, fire and air.
But let's return to the allegory of civilization. The natural and "wild" state of the water is symbolized by the "Fontana del Diluvio", the highest, located on the top of the slope, and heading the aqueduct that supplies the garden. Here the water initially flows from the rock.
This is followed in order by the "Fontana dei Delfini", symbolizing sea water, and the "Fontana dei Giganti" (earth?). But what connects these two fountains is perhaps the most evocative element of the whole garden: a sequence of spirals hooked to each other, within which the water flows rapidly and "chirping", with sculptural elements recalling shrimps, in clear connection with the former owners, the Gambara family (in Italian "gambero" means shrimp).
From the "Fontana dei Giganti", passing through the "Mensa del Cardinale", the water reaches the "Fontana dei Lumini" (fire?); and from here, finally appeased, the symbol of the triumph of the human mind over nature: the "Fontana del Quadrato" (air?), at the center of a pattern of sixteen squares, four of water and twelve of garden.
For the project, the name of Jacopo Barozzi (1507-1573) is mentioned. He is known as "il Vignola" after his birthplace (near Modena), and he is author, among other things, of the famous, nearby Villa Farnese in Caprarola. He allegedly worked together with Tommaso Ghinucci, the hydraulic engineer of Villa d'Este in Tivoli.
As can be seen, we are at the top of the architecture and art of the gardens of the full Italian Renaissance.

Hello I want to visit Villa Lante, Bagnaia near Viterbo. I found information online regarding an older train service that runs between Rome Flaminio station and to Bagnaia on the FC3 but it appears to run 5 times but only on Sundays. Is this correct? It is said to take longer than the trains but the scenery is to be enjoyed on the way. Has anyone travelled to Villa Lante using this service?
