‪Betty's Hope was established in 1674 and was the first sugarcane plantation on the island. It is now an open-air museum which tells the tragic but important story of colonization in the region, the importance that sugarcane was to the economy and the role that slavery played supporting the industry. I unfortunately arrived on a Saturday to discover that the museum is closed on Saturdays and Sundays so plan your visit accordingly. However, I was still able to view the twin windmills from outside the closed gate. It was both a beautiful and haunting sight. ‬

‪Visited on a Saturday morning the place was officially closed, but a kind member of staff let us in. Quite a sobering place to visit and quite moving in parts. Needs further investment to bring the full horror of slavery to light. Given its relevance to the island and the rest of the region‬

‪Betty's Hope is definitely well worth visiting. The entrance fee is $US2 which you put in an honesty box. Make sure you bring smaller notes as there is nowhere to get any change. The windmill has been very well preserved and shows the different accommodation for the slaves and managers of the plantation, which is quite moving. There are several interesting things to see outside and there is a small museum inside. It would be good if they had signs inside the museum to show you which way to walk round as it wasn't clear. I would recommend a visit of an hour to see everything.‬

‪I love to see the history of the places I visit and this was on my list. Even though it was in it's early stages of reconstruction, the museum room was very informative. A sad subject slavery but it has to be told so that we understand the hardship and misjustice that those people went through. A very interesting place and it was nice to know that our entrance fee was going towards preserving history. Please visit.‬

‪We visited one morning and straight away were accosted by the “women under the tree” who insisted we pay them there. I don’t think it was legitimate paying them there… as we were then asked to pay inside and the lady inside said that was the only place to pay! So be warned… I’m not 100% sure the ladies outside are actually giving that money to Betty’s hope…! Anyway, we refused to pay again and the lady was ok and didn’t force us, so she must be used to it. She did double check how much they asked us to pay (which makes me think they’re not legit).

That put a bit of a sour note on the visit but apart from that, it was informative and interesting.‬

‪We toured the museum house and walked the grounds. The foundation of the house was visible, lots of trees and on the hot day the shade was appreciated.‬

‪The ladies under the tree outside have NO CUSTOMER SERVICE whatsoever. The lady wouldn't even speak .‬

‪Really interesting place. Made us ponder on the inhumanity of the human race. Shocking to think what our ancestors thought was acceptable and normal and everyone should visit and take time to reflect.‬

‪I found this a really interesting place. It gave a small insight to the history of Antigua and the Sugar business as well as the slave trade.
A very poignant place that was tasteful and thought provoking.
The only standing buildings were the windmills and part of the refinery.
Not expensive to visit, I think it was EC$5 per person in an honesty box. Worth a visit if you have a spare hour.‬
