‪You have to go to Zapata National Park. If you are an outdoor enthusiast, nature lover, avid birder, scuba diver, fisherman, etc GO HERE! There’s an extensive amount of activities and places to explore. It’s Cuba’s largest national park and the various ecosystems and wildlife are a once in a lifetime opportunity to see.

We explored the park with our guide Kiko (CANNOT SAY ENOUGH GOOD THINGS ABOUT HIM, HE WAS UNBELIEVABLE). He’s been a guide for 10 years and has an exceptional knowledge of all the wildlife and particularly the rare birds that call the park home.

We drove to Santo Tomas (a remote village of 30 people in the center of the park) in a 4x4 Jeep Willys before sunrise. We say a nightja along the way! Once we arrived in Santo Tomas we took a canoe into the canal where we saw the Pygmy Owl, the Zapata Wren, Zapata Sparrow and other birds. Afterwards we drove to Sopillar where we saw the Northern Flicker and other endemic birds. Lastly, we went to Las Salinas, where we saw large flocks of flamingos, pelicans (brown and white), kingfisher, osprey, herons and cranes.

Kiko was very flexible and let us stop for espresso in the morning and take a detour to the Calibri garden where we say the smallest bird in the world, the bee hummingbird! Everyone should go to Zapata and the surrounding towns of Playa Larga and Playa Giron.‬

‪Die Krokodilfarm wurde zum Erhalt der einheimischen Krokodile angelegt. Ein Besuch lohnt sich, denn in Freiheit möchte man dem Rautenkrokodil nicht wirklich begegnen.‬

‪Fabulous Birding with Kiko in Zapata‬

‪Had two brilliant days birding in Zapata with Kiko (Yonadys) as our guide. Kiko had great English, great knowledge, and took us to the heart of the swamp, to Las Salinas, to Soplillar, and to other sites in the area. We saw so very many birds - the endemics, the tody, the trogan, screech owl, pygmy owl, all the water birds, and very very much more. (A few of the pictures of these are attached.) He'd organised our transport and knew all the local people, and had been in touch before we went out with him via WhatsApp - so we were always well informed. He came straight over to where we were staying the day before to make sure everything was sorted out. Also very amusing and easy to get along with, and seemed to enjoy it was much as we did. We've stayed in touch since too.‬

‪We visited the beautiful Parque Natural Montemar, which was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2001. It is located in Zapata peninsula,
It’s a large area of salt pans, t’s a large area of salt pans, marshes and mangroves with many crocodiles.
It’s a paradise for birdwatching! and a good spot for catch-and-release fishing!‬

‪We went in March, but it was already quite dry. We saw a few flamingoes, egrets, cormorants and roseate spoonbills. Recommend going earlier in the season.‬

‪Al llegar a guama con los muchachos hay que entrar al criadero de cocodrilos, pueden hasta cargar uno chiquito y despues ir en lanchas hasta la isla donde esya la aldea taina, un paseo inolvidable para toda la familia‬

‪Nous y sommes allés avec notre chauffeur Yodanis de pur turismo Por cuba, et nous avons rejoins le guide qui connaît cette zone par cœur Eduardo, il nous a emmené dans une bel endroit avec beaucoup de végétations, un vrai moment de bonheur, entre grottes de chauve souris, des grottes où on peut se baigner, et pas de moustiques malgré la magrove, n y allé pas seul car ce n est pas recommandé, demandez eduardo‬

‪Сомнительное удовольствие‬

‪Благо, что посещение деревни - только часть экскурсионной программы. Претендуют на ознакомление вас с бытом аборигенов, их традициями.... НО по факту - это просто ряженные, исполняющие незатейливый минутный ритуал и вымогающие у вас чаевые (пока не дашь денег не выпускают из шатра, физически удерживают, не дают пройти). Мы были в шоке, пришлось откупаться. Как только ты заплатил - ты им не интересен, делай что хочешь, гуляй самостоятельно по острову. В кафешке можно угоститься черепахой и крокодилом (как они утверждают), но мясо изначально мелко порезано, не знаю, доверять ли.... Нашли там потрясающее растение, которое сворачивает листочки при прикосновении к нему))) Растет под ногами белой статуи, поищите это чудо)))‬
