‪We arrived early and had the place to ourselves, very peaceful. Our two young children loved exploring, we also went out along the river bank and to the local church, lovely castle and village.‬

‪Free to enter and wonder around- very peaceful!
The church is full of character too!
It would be a great place to visit in the summer.‬

‪Its was the first of the three castles we were planning on visiting on the Herefordshire Monmouthshire boarders, each one a gem off the beaten track but worth exploring, make sure you visit the river bank and the church, lots of historic articles‬

‪It’s alright. Out of the “three castles” if you need to drop one I’d drop this one.

It’s nice but not as nice as the other two. It was busy when we arrived and seemed to be a meeting place making it even busier.

On the plus side, it’s free, there’s free parking (although limited) and pretty, so worth popping into if you’re passing.‬

‪I do wish Cadw would not quote limited opening hours for their unstaffed sites. In this case the castle is clearly open "all reasonable hours". The least impressive remains of the Three Castles, with 3 interpretation boards. Worth stopping, but not making a major detour.‬

‪These small castle ruins are free. They belong to the National Trust and are looked after by Cadw. Ideal for older children/couples and friends to run around and explore. Good historic information signs and nice grounds to picnic and play in. A river runs beside it and there is limited free parking, although I’ve never not been able to park. It adjoins St Bridgets church which looks very quaint and old.‬

‪Next stop was Skenfrith and we most ignored the sat nav's earnest entreaties to take 'short cuts' and stuck to the main (B!) roads. Skenfrith was actually signposted although the parking was on a steep grass bank that I wouldn't fancy using in the wet. We all needed some refreshments so walked down to the village hall where the dogs had some water and we had bacon sandwiches and Alice had a whole tub of a chocolate ice cream. The joys of being indulgent grandparents!
Next to the village hall was St Bridgets church, sadly locked up but apparently dating from the reign of bad King John. The castle was a squarish curtain wall with a large round keep in the middle. The information boards were great for putting the building in context and the Watergate gave an idea of the original river location. Alice and I watched people swimming in the river for a while (in disbelief in my case!) and then continued our wandering where she spotted a snake, with better eyesight than Deb or I!
After walking down to the river again, twice so Alice could count the steps each time, we walked back to the car and drove home.‬

‪We did this as part of a trip to see the Three Castles (this, White and Grosmont). Parking is available here but no other facilities are provided. This doesn't quite have the many features White Castle has or the amazing photo opportunities both White and Grosmont do, but this castle is still worth a visit. The walls still stand a reasonable height and give some understanding of what the original castle may have looked like. The tall keep also does this, standing out in the ruins and making a good subject for photos. Other than the keep and walls there is little left of the castle besides foundations of former buildings. But the best part is the location. There's a small doorway which leads to a small wooded area besides the River Monnow. The raging river and the calmness of the woods creates an interesting atmosphere, one of a peaceful nature typically seen in abbeys such as Neath and Tintern. Our visit was rainy, which meant that the site couldn't be fully appreciated, but overall a small castle that is worth to see for the backstory and atmosphere.‬

‪We went to the Bell at Skenfrith for lunch and had a quick walk around with the dogs after. A lovely spot to picnic and interesting ruins, although you cannot climb the walls. ‬

‪Parking can be a problem but do try and stop here. Although the castle is in ruins and you can not walk upon any of the walls its well worth a visit, agin information boards give you an understanding of what it was like. Surrounded by lovely green space where you can enjoy a picnic or just sit and relax. Take a short walk along the river and perhaps enjoy a tipple in the local pub. Great for a free entry site.‬
