There are several old churches in and around the Ardgay/Bonar Bridge area. If you have time to spare drive the ten miles up to the Amat Estate Ardgay and visit the Church where the poor took refuge during the clearances over two hundred years ago. Although they were penniless and homeless they refused to shelter inside the actual church but did take refuge for a while in the churchyard. Some of their names can still be seen scratched on the church window. Speak to the Amat Estate Office if you wish to fish in this area.

The church is usually locked but there are contact numbers on the door. The lady whom we rang had to be collected from and returned to a nearby village but this small inconvenience is rewarded by a great deal of knowledge and enthusiasm. The church contains a Pictish grave marker which is somewhat weathered but in the right light fairly easy to make out. The main figure shows two people riding on a horse or donkey who are generally thought to be the Holy Family on the flight to Egypt. The churchyard contains some interesting memorials.
