‪Did the 4D3N Mt Mulu trek in Mid May. It was a strenuous but generally safe trek. i would like to express my heartfelt thanks to my guide Mr. Christian and our porter (a very young man in his 20s) for making the trek possible and enjoyable for us. Christian who speaks excellent English is a very experienced guide and possesses a wealth of knowledge about the history, culture, flora and fauna of the area. He took great care of us during the hike, making sure that we were sound and good throughout the hike. Ask for Christian to be your personal guide if you happen to visit the national park!‬

‪This is a 24km trek, with almost 50% near vertical walking. Take advice from the Park Rangers before attempting ‬

‪Gunung Mulu NP is a must-stop when you are in Malaysian Borneo. Great nature and very impressing caves. The best tour is the deer-cave tour with the bat exodus at its end.
We stayed in the NP accommodation (Rainforest Lodge) which is very convenient as all the tours also start here. Rooms are quite new and provide all you need for a short stay. Bring ear plugs though as the walls are quite thin. ‬

‪The Park is an amazing place, a combination of river travel, cave visits, walks, treks and scenery along with firnedly helpful staff that help make a visit. Many of the attractions are remarkably well organised (carefully illuminated board walks) but you can, with organisation, go off onto marked forest paths and get closer to the astonishing forest and rivers. It is worth noting that some of the cave visits are in places strenuous - and the canopy walk isn't for those who don't enjoy heights (by its very nature!). We were lucky, timing our trips around the tropical weather as when it rains - it rains - and the one thing that can frustrate is the visit to the Deer Cave for the bats which when it is clear is astonishing.‬

‪Arrived at Mulu from Miri at around 230 pm .Met Adam who arrived from Kota Kinabalu. We proceeded to check in at Dcave homestay just a few hundred meters away. We headed to Mulu Park headquarters to register .Met the guide Mr Harry a Penan chap and got some briefing later on about what to do and should not do not.Unfortunately there was no porter for me which was quite annoying as the Mulu Park management didnt managed to get one. This later on was a real deal breaker as it would affect the outcome later. My gear was already about 19kg and brought down to about 16 kg.Hmm still wasnt' sure if it was too heavy . I was thinking yeah ok bring it on.Hell boy was I wrong! While my friends Adam and Simon decided to go see some caves. Second day at around 830 am we had a short briefing and checked our gear. Decided to lessen my gear to another 2 kg to about 14 kg after a talk with Robert another experienced guy and out host who had went up summit countless time .Met up with another 2 dudes from France and continued out journey to camp 1 from camp 3 from Mulu Park at 9am. Reached camp 1 at about 1140am . Had lunch at camp 1 and set off to camp 3 at about 1 pm.Reached camp 3 at about 830 pm in the evening after an exhausting climb with steep inclines .Anyway was quite fun to use my headlamp in the night ,but it wasn't everybody cup of tea.
Stayed a night at Camp 3 as didn't looked liked we could reach back in 4 days with this snail pace, disappointed but its better to listed to our experience guide. In hindsight should have lighten my load to even less as possible the backpack was really slowing me down the steep trails.I was cursing all the way up and legs cramp on both legs countless times. I reckoned then no wonder the porter didn't turn up as it was really tough to carry any load whatsoever .Looking at my gps app it took about 27km from start which was really unexpected. The old signs was incorrect and totally off by kilometres, total bummer! No wonder many websites had probably incorrect data.Next day woke up my whole body was aching like hell .Hendry our guide wanted to bring us up to misty forest but looking at poor Simon I decided not to go as he hadn't eaten the previous night. He looked really exhausted and I was doubting my legs.Anyway Adam went up and took some great pictures of some sunrise with 2 French chaps .After hearing how the trail was it probably was a correct decision. Its just not going up its going down too which worried me even with a lighter backpack. On the third day at around 814am embarked back with a heavy sigh and reached camp 1 in about 1240pm.Had a cool bath in the refreshing river and lunch. At 220 pm we took off and reached Mulu Hq at 5pm using a short cut amounting to about 18km. Wow the other trail was longer by 9km .Looking back we nearly made it and were already looking forward to climb up again next year .Anyway i managed to lose about 8kg and was a great preparation for tmbt soon in kk in a month time.‬
