A feeling of a serious accomplishment tackling this stunning down.
It’s like “The Shire” from LOTR on the top, with lush green grass, hundreds of Buttercups growing, strange directional wind formed trees, and breathtaking 360 degree vistas.
Run by the National Trust, and totally free, (paid parking). The friendly and knowledgeable National trust lady Amanda, was happy to talk about the best routes, and the points of interest whilst on the top of the Down.

Aside from the stunning beach (dog-welcome all year!) and wonderful hilltop walk with glorious views - there is also the National Trust visitor centre and cafe. We visit several times a month - the cafe has the best pasties for mikes around. This last visit (Feb 2023) we found the visitor's centre was being used to showcase some of the NT's restoration work in wild-life habitat. A really engaging member of the NT team (Amanda) was using VR headsets to help visitors enjoy being 'close up' to otters and other wildlife. Amanda's passion was infectious and her knowledge impressive. Thank you to Amanda and the the NT as a whole.

This spit of coast juts out into the Bristol Channel which allows fantasies views in every direction. At 400m at its peak if affords stunning views around a full 360 degrees. Both the metalled track and wide grass paths make for easy walking. It’s a stiff climb up from the car park, but we’ll worth it when you get up to the plateau. It’s about a 3 miler to walk the circuit.

What a beautiful day for a walk on Brean Down beach! Gorgeous views wherever you look. We seemed to be the only people taking advantage of the dry and sunny weather. Marvellous lift to the spirits!

Usually the walk along Brean down is peaceful. Today there were a herd of young bullocks roaming the cliff tops. They were rather frisky and stampeded down the hills towards the cliffs near the steps, a family with young children had to move dangerously close to the steep cliff edge to avoid the herd. Why were they stampeding...to get to the farmer who had driven up the path in his truck to throw a handful of pellets at the cattle before driving away. I guess he was aware of the potential disaster he almost caused.
Later on our return the cattle were approaching people coming up the steps. Near the cliff edge.
This is a disaster waiting to happen.

What we didn't realize is that most of the surrounding area was just one huge caravan park topped off with the worst Pontins in the country. The fragrance of chips and beer, wobbly people and chavs on L plates and huge zorsts.
To be fair though the NT café right at the end was nice and the trails well marked.

It was very windy when we visited (Bristol Channel gets really windy so be prepared) but sunny so after a power-up coffee and cake in the NT hut we first climbed up to the top of Brean Down. There’s either a steep flight of stairs or a more gentle path. Once you’re up, it’s an easy and enjoyable walk with fantastic views of the coast. There’s an old fort on the other side of the hill, you can explore it for free. There’s lots of wildlife to spot too. We went to the beach after doing the hill walk, it’s a long flat beach where dogs can have a runout.

Had a great time visiting Brean down, walked all the way to the old Fort, was great views of Brean and Weston Super Mare. The dogs enjoyed the walk but we kept them on their leads for their safety.

We went a week ago and they weren’t open. Not too sure if they are now tho.
Hi planning a trip to brean from gloucester, will be getting the train to weston then the bus does anyone know how much the bus is at all that would be great

sorry no, I drove, but Weston is very close to brean- I support the comment about the safety above re the mud flats- be mindful- once there though, it is wonderful beach to walk
Is there anyway to park here after 6pm? Seems like the only car park shuts but we're planning to visit when the sun starts to go down. Thanks :)

I think you can park in front of the bird farm. Why not climb up to uphill church and watch from there .....the view is the same and parking free.

Yes. The number 20 bus goes to Brean Beach from Western-super-Mare. From the bus stop it’s a 10 walk to Brean Down.

It would seem that this is not an idea place to visit if your mobility is impaired, is that correct? I understand that there are many steps to negotiate, is there any alternative route?

If you are going to the beach then you drive down into the beach and park, we paid £3 there are steps if you wish to climb up, I didn't as I don't like heights!

I visited Brean Down yesterday and have always paid for the parking but as we took out membership with the National Trust we parked as normal in our usual car park. This morning we noticed a slip of paper underneath the back wiper asking us to pay the parking in the shop. Now confused as I was under the impression it was free for NT members or did we park in the wrong car park? Is the NT car park the smaller car park on the right or the larger one on the left? Never used the cafes so not sure which is Cove Cafe.

As long as your NT windscreen sticker is displayed, it is free parking for members in both car parks. I left my initial application for membership on my dashboard until I received my card and sticker. If it happens again, speak to the manageress in the cafe, as that is NT owned. Hope this helps.

Do national trust members pay to park
Yes the car park is free for NT members, and as pointed out previously you need to display the parking sticker. It can get very busy at popular holiday times. It is also possible to pay and park on the beach. We tried the NT cafe and it was fine. Hope that you enjoy Brean Down.
