Popularly known as the "Red Church", for obvious reasons, St Molios was built in 1889 by the architect Sir John James Burnett.
Although a relatively modern church, it is interesting to note that St Molios was built to replace a previous church at Clachan that had effectively been deserted by its congregation who had historically felt allegiance to the House of Hamilton. By the year 1843 however, the island had been subjected to the hugely unpopular clearance of whole villages to suit the whims of the present Earl and the people of Arran showed their disaffection in the only way they could, by rejecting the established church in favour of the newly formed Free Church.
No longer could the Duke automatically command the loyal support of the islanders. Churches were emptied, and the Shiskine congregation repaired to the 'preaching cave' at Kilpatrick, taking with them William McKinnon as their preacher and pastor, a cottar who had been hard hit by the brutal land reforms. In 1886 a decision was taken to build a new church and building was completed 3 years later.
Internally, the church is dominated by the splendid exposed woodwork of the ceiling, which reminds me of the ribs in a wooden boat and which perfectly matches the wood of the pews and the wall panelling. The other most interesting aspect of the design is the use Romanesque or Norman arches in the construction of the windows, which suggest a sense of antiquity that is much greater than the church’s actual age.
The most interesting feature on the outside is the gravestone with the effigy of a monk that is now set into a buttress of the west wall, and protected from the elements by a glass screen. Original legend was that this was an effigy of St Molios himself, but that is now considered unlikely as the effigy is very similar to others found at Saddell Abbey on Kintyre which date from the 14th or 15th centuries and are much later than the time of St Molios.
