I was looking for an opportunity to volunteer and found the Vineyard Ministries online. Before this experience I didn't even know or could have imagined that people were living and working at the dump. When I first heard we were going to make sandwiches for people at the dump I thought it was for the garbage workers. Once we got to the dump and parked the big yellow bus suddenly so many people, men, women, children, started running towards the bus for their sandwich. I am so grateful that the Vineyard continued this operation even during Covid to bless these communities that need it the most. Of course we took all the necessary precautions like masks, gloves, glasses. There were only about 5 of us on the bus and we gave out the sandwiches through the windows so we didn't have to get off the bus.
I would highly recommend this experience to people of all ages. If you are visiting or living in Mazatlan and have the time and the heart to do something that may seem small, like making and delivering a sandwich, but actually has a huge impact on somebody else's life, please visit the Vineyard Ministries and volunteer. Their doors are open to everybody!

We took the kids with us for them to experience preparing sandwiches, bottled water and snacks for the school children and the needy rummaging through the freshly dumped garbage. This is where they seek food and materials needed to build a shelter. The Church took all of the volunteers and the freshly prepared meals out to the elementary schools in the low income neighbourhoods where we handed out the food to the young kids. They had been taught to lineup when the bus comes once to twice per week. Al was our host and is so knowledgeable and provided us with a history lesson not to mention recommendations for restaurants. We had arrived at the church at 8:45 am and back by about 2:30 pm. It was quite a drive out there on these unpaved dirt roads but well worth the experience especially being able to volunteer our time to help those in need.

When did we go back to calling it the Dump tour? I thought the Compassion Care tour was much more, well, compassionate. Anyway. My family has been coming to Mazatlan for better part of 15 years. We started going out with La Vina when our kids were 3&4. They're now 15 & 17. They've grown up in their attitudes around tending to others, and I suppose that is what it is about. Teaching compassion. Anyone is free to join the church and help out. They meet usually once a week, sometimes I think when the snowbird season gets busy it becomes more frequent. Check in at the church. They'll let you know when. You show up at the church at around 9:00. No experience needed. We gather, make the simplest of sandwiches. Tortas. A torta bun, swipe of mayo, slice of sandwich ham, slice of american cheese, and wrap it up. Into the bag goes an orange, sandwich and maybe a cookie. Others are filling water bottles. See, no experience needed. Then we all get on the bus and we're off to share love with others. Make new friends. Maybe touch the life of someone new, and maybe have your life touched as well. It's not just the dump though. There are colonias (neighborhoods) that are visited too. There are also different mission work opportunities that are often available too. Matthew 25:37-40

I came to Mazatlan for three weeks and went to this amazing experience 2 weeks. It’s really a humbling experience. We fed 5 areas today. We met the friendliest and most grateful People. You will get to bless the people with food and you will get hugs, high fives, and get to hold babies. I was able to feed a bunch of the dogs in one area today. An amazing experience to give back.

If you have a teenager whose idea of deprivation is an iPhone 5S when her friend has a 7, take them on this tour to see how the other half lives. And do some good at the same time.

My husband and I have decided that moving forward whenever we go on vacation we will 'give back' in some way to serve God. I mean, He has blessed us to be able to travel so it's time we serve Him during that time. Vineyard Ministries was a great way to do this while in Mazatlan. They were located about a mile down the road from the El Cid Marina we were staying at.
You start in the morning by making sandwiches and packing up lunch bags and bottled water. You then view a short film on what you will be doing and where the bus will take you....the City Dump, makeshift living areas, several other Ministry locations and a school which was our last stop.
The Dump isn't actually where people forage for food, but a place where workers collect whatever they can find to sell and make money -- plastics, cans, clothing, etc. I learned on this trip that Mexico does not offer its people any gov't assistance.
The highlight of the trip were the stops where we could interact with the kids. When they saw the bus they all ran to where they knew it would park and immediately formed an orderly line. Loved interacting with them and seeing their smiles. A very humbling experience. Bless those who give of themselves to keep it going, they're doing a great job.

This was my 3rd trip with La Vina (the vineyard church) to help with their 'compassion tour' to the dump and poor colonias.
The tours run 2x weekly (Tuesday and Thursday) during the high seasons when there are lots of tourists/expats in town to help. The tour starts at 9 am helping make sandwiches and fill water bottles to take out on the tour, which lasts about 2.5 hours .
During the tour you visit several locations and deliver the food and drink while learning about the people and their lives.
It's an extremely humbling experience to see the struggles the people endure and how much of a blessing these tours and the church itself is on their communities.
While being a very sad experience, it is also so rewarding to know your few hours of help is so appreciated & needed.
Very much worth taking a few hours of your time to experience.

My 5 year old son and I participated in this tour in early Dec 2015. It is very much worth your time. We met at the La Vina church at 900 am. (Go through the side door-right side of building if you are facing the front of the church) There was approx. 15-20 people helping out. First we filled a lot of water bottles-I didn't count them but guessing about 150. At the same time others were making ham and cheese sandwiches guessing around 150 as well. Then we watched a short video presentation on what the feeding tour is all about. We then boarded the bus and drove through several colonias. The group leader pointed out a lot of interesting facts about Mazatlan and its people throughout the tour. We stopped at a couple colonias, where we fed several children. They would run to where the bus stopped and line up in anticipation. We would get off the bus (I think there were 8 of us that went on the tour) and give each child a sandwich, an orange, and a bottle of water. My son and I had brought pens and pencils along, so we handed these out as well. I have never seen anyone so excited over so little! We then drove through a few more colonias before stopping at the dump and giving the workers (poor people scavenging through garbage for anything they can use or sell) a sandwich, orange, and a bottle of water. We also brought along several pairs of gloves and a few hats. Again so excited over so little! I wish we had brought more as not everyone received a pair. On the way back we stopped at a school where we also provided food and water, as well as stopping at one of the newest La Vina churches/feeding center for a brief tour. I have visited Mazatlan several times and done a lot of tours, but this was one of the best! Highly recommended. Its free (there is an opportunity for donations) Both my son and I were impressed and we both enjoyed it. Take a few hours of your vacation and give back to the less fortunate. The leader was very informative.

Take a bus tour with volunteers from La Vina (Vineyard) Fellowship of Mazatlán. See the poor of Mazatlán eke out a living scavenging from the city dump. Bless them with a bottle of water and sandwich which you helped make before heading out. See some of the "feeding stations" that La Vina has set up throughout Mazatlán (up to 18 now). This is not a gawkers tour but an educational and spiritual journey into the life of some Mexicans in Mazatlán.
I have taken this tour twice. It deeply affected me and taught me to be more generous.
Tours are about 5 hours long. Donations pay for the expenses. Show up at 9 to help make sandwiches and fill water bottles. The bus leaves at 10. Check with La Vida for which days the tours are running.

Probably way more info then you expected but better more than not enough.
We ended up volunteering one day while we were there. If my memory serves me correct, the ministry is on the main thoroughfare. I thought TAdvisor entry made reference to the days that they do this. We just went down one morning (9-10) and started searching for a way to speak to someone, the entrance is down the right side i think. There was a young lady there who headed up the feedings.
The group makes the sandwiches, and the day we were there each bag had a sandwich and 2 sandwich cream cookies. Sandwiches are made in an assembly-line fashion.
Uber is readily available.
They discourage handing anything else out.
It was an excellent way to give back! It certainly puts things in perspective for you.
We took pens, pencils erasers etc with us and we used an Uber to the boys orphanage which is on the southern part of the city. Uber is so reasonable and reliable, we use it all the time in Mexico or abroad.
FYI no matter where we go in Mexico, we always take school supplies, pens, pencils, colored pencils, crayons, erasers. Just a suggestion, as it is very much appreciated. We visit different schools to make our gift and we ask that they share with other schools if possible. During our last trip to PVR in November 2019, the elementary school had been broken into reticently so they really appreciated the crayons, pencils etc. Speaking with the director, he told us that they will greatly accept anything. including paper, coloring books etc.
In case you're not fluent in Spanish, download google Translator app. It's a great way to learn and communicate.
I hope this helps to answer any questions that you may have and if you have more just ask and I'll reply asap.
Safe travels! :)

Greetings! We would like to know where would we meet? Do we simply go the the address on the trip advisor listing?
What time does do we need to be at the meeting place and the duration of the activity? Is U**r readily available in Mazatlan for transportation needs?
is there a website/ contact email to see what other things we can possibly bring with us such as pens, pencils, erasers, etc for the children?
we appreciate any information that anyone can provide for us.
Thank you!
