My family booked a fishing trip during our trip to Cancun and fishing is not my thing. So I was looking for something to do during the day. I stumbled upon the Mayan Musuem of Cancun and was glad I did. Located a little on the north side of the Hotel Zone I was able to walk from the Marriott Cancun about 25 minutes. Once I arrived I started to notice this was definitely geared towards locals more than tourist which was great. They had maybe 25% of signage in English and 100% signage was in Spanish. Luckily google translate is super easy to use. lol. I absolutely loved the the pottery and history of all the exhibits. It is amazing how things 2000 years old can still be so absolutely beautiful. Walking outside around the ruins was really cool as well. You can feel the history around you. I spent about an hour and a half in the museum but for $5 usd you can not beat the expereince if you love history.

This was a fun inexpensive outing. It wasn’t crowded. We highly recommend checking it out. The artifacts were amazing. It was nice learning about the local history.

This is a great little museum - great value for the money and time! There is a small archeological site on the premises that was very informative and interesting! Recommend doing the outdoor portion first (earlier in the day is cooler) and then heading indoors for the air conditioning/exhibits . We were there 2-3 hours!
Easily accessible by public transportation in the hotel zone!

What a treat! I was expecting a small museum with a minimal amount of exhibits but I could not have been more wrong. This is a very well done museum with a lot of surprises. First there is the building itself... designed in the mode of Wright's Guggenheim in NYC the spiral ramp to the top floor provides interesting vistas of the surrounding jungle area. When you reach the top level, you arrive at the main museum. Your first view is some of the earliest artifacts along with a introductory time line of the different ancient civilizations that existing in the Yucatan. The examples of the pottery and carved stone are of high quality for a collection of this size. It was a an unexpected treat to lean about the different tribal kingdoms, the developments over time and the methods of trade between them from the northern borders to Honduras and even Cuba.... I did not expect to hear that there were vessels that were capabel of making the trip that far for trading routes.
The real surprise was the archeological site that is part of the museum complex. THERE's A Pyramid! Not to mention a dozen other lesser sized buildings. Plus there are iguana's about every 3' so watch your step!
I have to say that the small gift shop is nicely stocked with quality merchandise and not just the standard "tourist" fare.
We visited for about two hours and probably could have stayed longer?

Lots of great Mayan Art and Artifacts to see and the San Miguelito Ruins are on the property and give insight as to how the Ancient Mayans lived on the Coast.

This was a good value. We spent about an hour between the museum and the archeological site, after visiting El Rey. There is a good variety of artifacts, and a good explanation of their significance. The archeological zone was serene and peaceful. Even if you do not have too much interest in the ruins, it would be worth it just for the walk. It felt like an oasis in the chaos of the hotel zone. There is some wildlife (an iguana surprised me on the trail), which my kids liked. I felt like I learned something about pre-Hispanic Mexican culture.
This place is easy to spot - it is on the east side of the street, and there is a big sign, so you can tell the bus driver to stop.

This museum is closed Mondays! We found this out the hard way- lol. Not sure how we missed that! Glad we went back another day as there are so many interesting pieces to see from many areas. It cost 70 pesos per person for entry. There is some English descriptions but not a-lot. We were familiar with some areas and history so we could piece together what was written. This is a large facility as it includes ruins outside that you can also see. We could not find a guide to tour us- but we managed on our own. I would bring good shoes, water,- bug spray & a hat for comfort when touring outside. Highly recommend this site to visit -allow 2 1/2-3 hours . Small gift shop on site

Does anyone know if this museum has reopened? It closed due to Covid outbreak in early April 2021.

We purchased tickets on site, just inside the entrance area in front of the gift shop. I do not remember the price of the tickets but it was not unreasonable. Have a good time and take good walking shoes.
que precio tiene la entrada?

We want to visit the museo from Fiesta American Villas and would like to know how far to travel and time? Also is there a cafe or a place to buy snacks?

It should be about a 15 minute drive. Note that you'll need to go past and make a u-turn at one of their turn-around spots when you go there. I do not think they have a snack bar, however the museum is small and you will be able to take it in within a couple of hours and then resort to one of the other food options along the hotel zone.

Do they have English guides? Or can they connect us with a knowledgeable local guide who could lead us? We went on our own before and felt we missed a lot.

Sorry, we do not know if there are guides or not. We do recall that English language signage has improved since the first year.
