I spent a week in February 2023 in Spanish classes at Habla. The people and teachers were very friendly and fun. We had students of all ages from various backgrounds and places. If was an enjoyable social atmosphere and I plan to return for a week of private tutoring and a family stay to really amp up my Spanish. I would have enjoyed more opportunities to just practice conversation instead of mostly classroom study.

My experience of Habla consisted of 6 days of private tutoring with Gaby. She is a kind and patient teacher. I was able to participate in a couple of cooking classes, along with a trip to the grocery store and to a museum. All interesting. Habla is conveniently located, Merida is very safe and simple to walk or find a taxi. My Spanish is improving bit by bit.
The next time I am there I will want to mix group classes with private lessons because the other students were also friendly.

When I arrived at Habla at the beginning of January, I was VERY basic in Spanish. I knew some present tense conjugations, grammatical genders, some everyday vocabulary, and some colloquialisms…but I couldn't really SPEAK. One month of intensive classes later, I was having full-blown conversations in Spanish about Mexican mythology.
While no language course is a magic wand that will make you fluent, Habla gives you the tools and attention you need to put in the work yourself. I worked with three excellent teachers— Gabi (beginner), Estela (intermediate) and Rodrigo (advanced). The teachers focus primarily on communication, and will correct you gently when you misspeak, but won't interrupt you every other word like some teachers. They also eat breakfast and lunch with the students, so conversation practice is a blank slate.
Coursework is manageable, and never take-home. All work is done in-class, and utilized communally, so you never find yourself in a corner working on pointless exercises by yourself.

My husband and I took 2 weeks of classes at Habla in November. We enjoyed the classes and learned so much that we returned for another 3 weeks in January. We were impressed by our teachers. All are very well qualified. We worked with Rodrigo and Mar and enjoyed all our classes. The classes were always interesting, not only did we improve our Spanish but we learned about the culture, the history, etc. of the Yucatan. Our favourite meals, while staying in Merida, were the ones served to us at the Habla! Carla went out of her way to make sure we had tasty and healthy food every day. We enjoyed conversing with students and teachers during our meal breaks. Gaby and Estella taught other classes while we there. But all of the teachers conversed with and helped everyone during mealtimes and activities. Lori helped us with grammar questions and was always looking for ways to improve our experience. Anna Maria was in the office and was always a pleasure to talk to. Don Jose helped around the school and with Carla showed us how to make things. (such as tortillas and chocolate). It was a great experience and we are already working on plans to return again.

What an amazing place! This is my sixth Spanish language school in Latin America over the past 15 years and it is by far the BEST! It is a perfect combination of language learning, intellectual challenge, and social interaction. Highly motivated and innovative teachers, interesting themes and activities, fantastic food, great students to mingle with. I spent a month here and wanted to stay longer. I will definitely return!

Spending a week at Habla taking Spanish classes was a great experience. Staying in Merida and going to Habla were such a great way to build on my knowledge of Mexico. I definitely prefer doing something like this to staying in a resort where it’s basically impossible to learn the language and culture.The teachers use methods that are very engaging. My 11-year-old daughter loved it as much as I did.

Great learning experience in a small group setting for 2 weeks.Our teacher, Mar, was excellent. The 2 workshops were very enjoyable. So good we’re returning in January for 3 weeks.

If you have an interest in learning Spanish (from any level) and having a fully immersive experience both intellectually and culturally, Habla is right for you.
I could not recommend Habla more highly! I had never taken a Spanish class before and over the course of 10 weeks (longer than the average stay but beyond beneficial, February 2022 - April 2022), I was fully able to comprehend, read, write, and speak with ease and comfort. The instructors at Habla helped me go from 0 Spanish knowledge to fully conversational in such a short time due to their intentional, thoughtful, and engaging teaching styles. I worked with 4 different instructors while at Habla - each had their own way of teaching and the variety helped me learn how to speak and understand in a multitude of ways. I felt comfortable yet challenged every day. Weekly cooking classes and museum visits (and a dance class one of the weeks!) added to the experience as well.
Lunch every day is prepared by the chef, Karla. Each day has different and delicious local foods - I enjoyed every meal over the 10 weeks I was there (50 lunches and almost all different!). The admin staff are all wonderful and extremely helpful for non-Habla activities too - for example, Ana was able to help me find and book weekend trips that aligned with my interest and items on my bucket list.
As a mid-twenties solo female traveler, I felt safe in Mérida for the entirety of my time there. Habla made it easy to make friends (both with fellow travelers and the teachers themselves) and the city itself is very tourist friendly. Mérida is a phenomenal city and Habla is a must. I cannot wait to go back!

I can't recommend Habla enough. I did the in-person Spanish immersion program for two weeks in March 2022 and LOVED it. Lore was my teacher for both weeks and she was incredible. She was very patient, knowledgeable, and personable. She was open to my requests for learning specific things and I never felt like she was judging me (even when I was struggling). Alejo and Ana were fantastic as well, very welcoming and great at keeping everything organized. The food was delicious - Carla is quite the chef! Everyone I met was wonderful.
Overall, I felt I learned more in 2 weeks with Habla's immersion program than I did from a semester of Spanish classes. The cultural aspect gives more meaning and context to the language which deepened my learning and retention. I also appreciated that every day we read, wrote, spoke, and listened to Spanish. I will definitely be taking classes with them in the future.
If you're contemplating classes with Habla, take the leap! You won't be sorry.

I started Spanish online classes with Habla as a beginner and because of my wonderful teacher and Habla’s interactive model, I quickly built a strong foundation for grammar and became confident in speaking conversationally. I visited Merida for Habla’s Spanish immersion program and fell in love with the city, the school, and the whole Habla family. This is a genuine and amazing community that anyone looking to improve their language skills must connect with. I made friends I’ll stay in touch with, learned so much about Mexican art, history, and culture, and ate incredible food every day while I was there on campus (the best vegetarian options I’ve ever had!! ¡Gracias Carla!) I wouldn’t change anything about my experience and i strongly considered not getting on my plane home. I am taking some time to practice all the Spanish I have learned on my own now but will be returning to HABLA when I’m ready to start studying formally again and of course next time I’m in Merida. If you’re reading reviews trying to pick a school, you’ve found the right one, reach out! I’m so grateful for all the things that have happened for me since i did. This is a group of fabulous and inspiring people doing something truly special and unique, don’t miss out :)

My 13 year old daughter and I are planing to spend the last week of July in the city center and attend your school for Spanish lessons. How far are you from the city center? We will probable take a taxi to the school.

Hola Tracey, we are happy that you will join us this Summer. I recommend the first day to take a taxi to school. Ana will send you before your classes start an email with directions on how to get to Habla for the taxi driver. It is not hard to get here from downtown. Once you know your way you can decide if you want to walk or take a cab or ride the bus. By taxi it will take, depending in what part of downtown you are staying, about 10 to 15 minutes.
