The most beautiful temple in the complex and still under worship. Everything about this temple is mind-blowing. Intricate stone carvings, decorated pillars, beautiful idols. The aura of the temple stays inside you.

This temple is a must-see in Pattadakal. Never-ending intricate sculptures in the interior. Of special note : Surya riding chariot driven by seven horses, scenes from Ramayana, story from Panchatantra too. Also, huge monolithic Nandi in the pavilion facing the temple

The Virupaksha Temple is the biggest and the most impressive of all the temples in the Pattadakal complex.
A beautifully carved toran (a decorative door hanging) atop the entrance to the sanctum at Virupaksha Temple, right above the gate. The picture gets prettier as you enter the temple. Inside the temple, are stones inscribed with details of kings, queens, and architects who laid different foundations, pillars adorned with tales from Ramayana, Mahabharata, and the life of Krishna, and a number of filigreed windows.
The famous Kailasha Temple at Ellora in Maharashtra is believed to have been modelled along the design of this temple. This temple is the only one in Pattadakal where live worship is performed on a daily basis, so we had to enter with bare feet. The other temples are just grand monuments, but where no worship is carried out in the present day, so these can be seen without taking off our footwear.
The temple area is well maintained and the Nandi in front of the Temple is really beatutiful.

Virupaksha Temple is not just one temple, but a temple compound with many temples dedicated to Shiva. While many of the small temples are worth a quick look, it’s the big main temple that’s truly interesting. An unusual feature of the main temple is instead of a typical Nandi platform in the forecourt of the temple, the platform sits on an elevated madapa of it’s one and is roughly the same height as the entrance of the temple. The tower of the temple is a Dravidian style square shaped pyramid and highly decorated. The same can be said of the walls and columns of the temple, with numerous friezes of religious and civic scenes, many of which are worth a close up inspection.
The Virupaksha Temple is the biggest, architecturally the most diverse and most decorated of all the temples in the Pattadakal temple complete and the one temple that’s a must see in Pattadakal.
This temple is also an active temple and you're free to worship in the sanctum sanctorum where there's also a Shiva priest.

The Virupaksha temple is the largest temple complex in Pattadakal and also the most beautiful. The interiors and exteriors of the walls have beautiful carvings depicting scenes from Indian Mythology and are remarkably well preserved making a visit to this temple complex a very rewarding experience.

If you are visiting Pattadakal, I would strongly recommend that you save this temple for last. It is clearly the apogee of Chalukyan temple art and it will impress even the most jaded of temple-goers.
This eighth century complex is the best-preserved of the Pattadakal monuments. Some of its carvings are remarkably crisp considering their tremendous age. The pillars, for example, are inset with sculptural reliefs of exceptional detail and beauty. Wherever you look you will find narrative panels, dwarapalas, beautiful plasters and carved festoons. The Nandi mandapa at this temple almost defies believe. The polished black Nandi is a stunning sight. The ringing bells and frequent pujas make it clear that this one is still an active place of worship. This all adds to its unique atmosphere. There is definitely a sense of the mystic which can be felt here.

The pillars inside are very ornate and each one tells a story. The scultures on the side walls are magnificient. This is the most interesting of the temples in Pattadakkal

This temple in the Dravidian style has been lavishly sculpted and has a large Nandi mantap outside it. The themes on its outside walls include episodes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and Panchatantra
