The lovely 2 x 3.5 km hike that begins at the shores of Lake Louise and climbs steeply uphill—passing Mirror Lake and leading up to Lake Agnes—is best done at around 7-8 AM.
We started at 7:30 AM, hiking up with just a few other hikers around us. The air was cool, the forest was completely still, and it felt like we had the long climb all to ourselves.
On our way down 1.5 hours later, the trail was packed with people and horseback riders going up in single file. The air was warm and dusty, many were playing loud music, and the entire scene had transformed into a massive circus.
As you can see from the photos, Lake Louise, Mirror Lake, and Lake Agnes are all wonderfully photogenic in the morning.
At the top, it’s a delight to enjoy a cup of hot tea from the teahouse and eat your packed lunch by the shores of Lake Agnes before heading back down or continuing up to the Beehive.
By the way, anyone in decent shape can manage this hike, which follows a wide, well-maintained trail. But as mentioned, it’s a relatively steep climb up and a correspondingly steep descent back to Lake Louise.

The hike is just over 7km to the teahouse and back. You pass Mirror Lake (the big beehive) alone the way. It took us 1hr 40mins to reach the teahouse and 1hr 15mins to return. The trail is listed as "difficult". Though many people (around 1/2) wear specialized hiking boots and use walking poles, we saw people of all ages (up to mid 70s) and body-types who successfully completed the hike with nothing more than sneakers and shorts.
We did not go into the teahouse. Our only comment is that a line started forming 30 mins before it opened. On a related topic, parking at Lake Louise fills fast in the summer months. The lot was nearly 1/2 full when we arrived at 530am.

Lake Louise is beautiful but you do not experience the full color unless you see it from above! The hike to Lake Agnes not only gives you amazing views of Lake Louise, but also the surrounding mountains. We did the hike with three kids (ages 6,8 and 10) on June 5th. Crampons were very helpful on the last 1/2 mile, especially when descending. The teahouse at Lake Agnes is an added bonus as well. This was our second favorite hike in Banff (Johnston Canyon to Ink Pots).

Located near Lake Louise in Banff National Park, the Lake Agnes Trail is a 4.6 mi/7.4 km out-and-back hike with an elevation gain of 1,259 ft/383.7 m. My wife and I completed this hike on a chilly and overcast day in mid-October 2023. This trail is rated in most guides and publications as being moderate to moderately challenging, but as a 69-year-old experienced hiker, I definitely found it to be more in the difficult range. We did not carry bear spray as this is a very popular trail with a great deal of foot traffic, which made the likelihood of a bear encounter much smaller.
To reach the trailhead, park your vehicle in one of the public parking lots for Lake Louise (these lots fill up quickly, so arriving before 9am is recommended). NOTE that there are no restroom facilities along the trail until you reach Lake Agnes, so you might want to use the public restrooms near the parking lot. Once you are looking at magnificent Lake Louise, turn right and follow the paved promenade; look for the fork to the right as you reach the end of the grounds for the Chateau Lake Louise. There you should see a small sign directing you to Lake Agnes. Take the paved trail heading up the hill toward the forest.
Once in the forest, the trail eventually becomes hard-packed dirt and progresses ever upward. NOTE that the trail’s uphill grade is relentless; there are very few places where it temporarily levels out, so take your time and take rest breaks when needed. At around the halfway point, just before a switchback, there is an opening that allows you a great view of the turquoise waters of Lake Louise. Continuing your uphill trek, you eventually reach Mirror Lake, a popular rest stop for hikers. The fog was so thick this morning that we couldn’t see more than a few feet of the lake, but it still provided for a welcome respite.
From Mirror Lake there are signs that point the way to Lake Agnes. For a while, the trail is uphill but in good shape, but then you come to a stretch where the trail becomes extremely rocky. In addition, the trail is also used by horses, so we also had to contend with lots of fresh horse droppings as well. After you pass that section you will hear a waterfall, which is your signal that you are almost there. Next to the photo-worthy waterfall are stairs that will lead you to the famous Lake Agnes Teahouse.
The teahouse was closed for the season, so we found a place next to the lake to rest and relax. We could barely see the lake, as at this elevation (7,005 ft/2,135 m) we were basically sitting in the middle of a cloud. However, at one point the clouds dramatically parted a bit and we were able to catch a glimpse of the impressive peaks that surround the lake.
Typical of my reaction to difficult hikes, I grumbled all the way up about how hard it was and how tired I felt, but once I got back to our car I admitted I was glad we did it. It was a beautiful hike and well worth the effort.

The lake itself is beautiful, but there were just far too many people on this hike for it to be enjoyable. I've never realized how loud and obnoxious people can be until this hike. We did it right after sunrise, so early in the day. Can't imagine what it would be like the late morning or early afternoon. I would not recommend this one.

Let me start off by saying that I am athletic, but not a hiker. Since I regularly walk 3-4 miles a day (on mostly flat ground) i thought this would be easy. It was not. Turns out walking uphill for over an hour is very challenging! I made it to the top with the only side effect being sore calves the next day, but this was challenging enough that I would not want to see what any "difficult' hikes look like. This being said, the views at the top were worth it

It takes 90-120 minutes to hike from the lake to the Teahouse, and while you go through 400 metres of elevation, it’s mostly a steady, wide path that takes you there, apart from the stairs at the start and end.
Around half way there’s a nice slot in the trees for lake views, and near the end there’s Big Beehive, Mirror Lake and the final waterfall below the Teahouse.
This is not the hike for getting away from it all – while only a fraction of the crowds at the lake shore will take this hike, you will walk with, and pass, thousands over the course of the there and back hike.
But it’s worth it – the Teahouse is a delight, and its setting just sensational.
Views here are nice, but to get the classic views back down to the lake you need to take the walk up behind the Teahouse to Little Beehive.
If you’re not up to the full climb, there’s actually superb views just a hundred metres along the track behind the Teahouse.
But if you can make it to the top (about 20 minutes each way) the views on a clear day are stunning.
Return to the lake shore is the same way you came up, but from Little Beehive there is a short cut before the Teahouse that cuts the corner.

Absolutely Wonderful Lake that I could sit at all day and never tire of. It is a smaller lake but worth every step of the hike. Go, do, see.. you will like it I guarantee!

The climb up to the tea house I would suggest that you have some level of physical fitness before taking on this challenge. It is a steady climb up but worth the views. The tea house was closed . The scenery was beautiful of the lake , lake Agnes and mirror lake . A suggestion for the climb would be to bring walking poles and water. It does take 3 hours approximately. You will get there if you take it at your own pace. Good walking shoes are a must with a waterproof jacket. The sun was shining down at lake louise but when we arrived at lake Agnes it was sleeting. Didn’t stop us taking lots of photos

La vista y la zona es magnifica, vale muchísimo la pena, pero creo que el mejor consejo que les puedo dar es lleguen temprano. La zona es muy popular y hay poco espacio de estacionamiento, por lo que es sumamente recomendable llegar temprano (al rededor de las 8 de la mañana). De esta manera no perderán tiempo buscando estacionamiento y podrán disfrutar mejor del recorrido.
Desde el lago Louise se hace mas o menos una hora de subida hasta el lago Agnes, el camino es algo empinado en algunos puntos pero nada imposible, creo que cualquier persona con condición normal lo puede hacer. Después del lago pueden continuar el camino otros 20, 30 minutos hasta el beehive donde se tiene una vista excelente del lago Louise y las montañas de alrededor.
Nosotros fuimos a principios de junio por lo que todavía había algo de nieve y había zonas resbalosas, las cuales pueden ser algo molestas para gente con tenis o zapatos normales.
Desde el lago Louise se hace mas o menos una hora de subida hasta el lago Agnes, el camino es algo empinado en algunos puntos pero nada imposible, creo que cualquier persona con condición normal lo puede hacer. Después del lago pueden continuar el camino otros 20, 30 minutos hasta el beehive donde se tiene una vista excelente del lago Louise y las montañas de alrededor.
Nosotros fuimos a principios de junio por lo que todavía había algo de nieve y había zonas resbalosas, las cuales pueden ser algo molestas para gente con tenis o zapatos normales.

Should we book Timberline Tours horseback riding to Agnes Lake Tea House in advance or the day we are there? Just wondering considering we will be in Lake Louise during the rainy season but don't know if they sell out in June. How far are the stables from Lake Louise? Thanks!

Yes there are public toilets at Lake Agnes. There are two unisex ones similar to the ones along the highway. From the tea room you need to climb about four minutes . They were busy.
