Stunning views at the viewpoint. Relatively easy hike if you exclude the last rocky uphill section which seemed quite dangerous and can be skipped. Did a loop from the Plain to Highline, then Big Beehive, Lake Agnes and Mirror Lake.

When I was choosing a hike in Lake Louise, I was confronted with the basic choice: Plain of the Six Glaciers or Big Beehive. I chose Big Beehive. I was underwhelmed by it but luckily had enough time to extend my hike to Plain of the Six Glaciers and it is so much better of a hike. The views of the snow capped mountains, waterfalls down the rocks, distant valley view of Lake Louise, and the much less crowded tea house make this the hike to do if you must choose one. Much of the trail is exposed and can get hot, so bring plenty of sunscreen and water. The tea house is a nice plus after a long hike and we immediately got a table with a view when we arrived compared to Lake Agnes' long wait. The tea house does take credit card for those that are curious and they allow you to eat your own food if you just want a drink or dessert. The views from the tea house are just as good as the viewpoint if you want to save a little time. I recommend this as the definitive Lake Louise hike. You can extend to Big Beehive, but it doesn't add much in my opinion.

If you are not staying lakefront at Lake Louise, then plan on arriving early for parking. We arrived at 6:30 to snag a parking spot before the lot closed. The weather was a mixed bag with a bit of rain and snow. The lakefront at sunrise was very busy. The crowds thinned as we made our way along the lake to the Plain of Six Glaciers. As we hiked along, we heard what sounded like thunder. As we got deeper into the canyon, we realized the boom was the sound of snow falling away from the glacier. We hiked to the very end of the trail past the teahouse for a closer view of the glacier. All along the trail were views back down the canyon to Lake Louise.

I started this hike at around 8 AM. The first 2 km of the hike is flat and you walk around the lake (Lakeshore trail). After walking about 20 minutes, you will reach a point where the rock flour is draining into the lake, which is so cool to see. Then, you will go through a wood boardwalk, and at this point, you leave the lake behind you.
The trail then goes through trees and forests with a gradual uphill. In about an hour since the departure (about 4 km in), you will reach a junction where the uphill trail on the right side would lead to the Big Beehive. After this point, you start to see the open views of Victoria Glacier and the glacier on top of Mount Lefroy. There are some switchbacks on a few places but none of them is too steep.
Then, you will reach the teahouse. I took about 1 hour and 40 minutes to get to the teahouse but that included a few breaks, so if you are a fast hiker, you may get there in 1.5 hours or even less. You can either stop your hike here and go back or continue to the Abbot Pass Lookout for another 1.4 km. I continued to the lookout.
Right after leaving the teahouse, you will pass through some trees and in about 5 minutes, you will see a sign that says the trail is not maintained beyond this point. Continue your hike and the trail gets a bit narrower and rocky but nothing dangerous at all. The views will open up and you will get to see the north aspect of Mount Lefroy, which looks majestic. The "trail" then becomes full of rocks and stones and will naturally end after a slight uphill climb. On your back, you can see the tiny Lake Louise and the Fairmont hotel, your front is the Victoria Glacier, and you can also see the "Death Trap" with the Abbot Pass where the Abbot Pass Hut used to be located.
I personally couldn't reach the official end of the trail because the wind was SO strong to the point that made me a bit hard to breathe so I had to turn back, but a few people in front of me continued on. I think I stopped maybe about 100 m before the end of the trail. I still got to see the Death Trap and glaciers so I was happy. After I came back to the trailhead, it was 12:05 PM so it took 4 hours for the entire hike with several breaks and photo stops.
The views were stunning and it was so amazing to see the majesty of Mount Lefroy and the surrounding glaciers at a close distance. Looking them far from the Lake Louise didn't make me realize how massive the sceneries were, so I definitely recommend this hike. For me, I felt this hike was easier than the Big Beehive hike, even though the distance was longer. Amazing hike!

We hiked with Backroads to the Tea House with a group of 18. We were 49 to 69 years old. Varying hiking levels. We made it that’s all that counts! We witness thunder melting snow off the glacier! Magical!

This was an amazing trail. We went from around Lake Louise to Mirror Lake to Little Beehive and then Lake Agnes Tea House and then around Lake Agnes to Big Beehive and from there to Plain of Six Glaciers Tea House and finally Six Glaciers Viewpoint and then back. It was a long hike – taking us most of the day – since we stopped quite often to take in the magnificent views and to eat at one of the tea houses. The scenery was just breathtaking. At one point, on the route to Plain of Six Glaciers tea house, we passed the side of the mountain just covered in wild flowers. Other than being long, the majority of the hike was not too difficult with the exception of the section from Lake Agnes to Big Beehive. That section was a rather challenging hike up. The other parts of the hike did not have such a steep grade. If I had to give a recommendation, it might be to turn around after the Plain of Six Glaciers tea house. The approx 2 km to Six Glaciers Viewpoint wasn’t as spectacular as the rest of the walk and while not difficult to get to, it was difficult coming back down – as all the gravel made it somewhat slippery and so was slow going. (Uphill on a slippery slope is easier than downhill on the same slope.) Also, the end of the viewpoint is not marked, which was surprising. Almost all other main points had some signage. There are outhouses (restrooms) near both tea houses. Note: On All Trails, this is called the Plain of Six Glaciers – Big Beehive – Lake Agnes Tea House trail.

We were intimidated by some of the reviews of this hike, so on our first day in LL we decided to only do the Lake Agnes Teahouse/Small beehive hike. We found that quite strenuous so we decided not to do the loop to Plain of Six Glaciers. Big mistake! Fast forward a week later and we had an extra day in Banff coming back from Jasper and we were so bummed that the Sulphur Skyline trail in JNP was closed (due to Miette Rd being washed out) so our kids convinced us to do this trail. I am so glad we did because this was one of the most beautiful trails we have ever done, certainly the best one of our trip to Banff/LL/Jasper! Unlike Lake Agnes which is mostly in the forest, this hike gives you a view of the origins of Lake Louise the whole way. Go past the teahouse to the lookout point to see the glaciers! We actually saw an avalanche from one of the glaciers in the distance and I'll never forget the thundering noise it makes!
If you can only do one hike in Lake Louise, choose this trail! It is less crowded than Lake Agnes and especially once you get closer to the glacier lookout there's very few people left. Honestly our family agrees that this trail is EASIER than Lake Agnes because unlike Lake Agnes its not a continuous steep ascent, it has some flat areas and the view will distract you from the longer distance. Only caveat is the teahouse in Lake Agnes is nicer with better views. Even better, do both teahouse hikes on the same day, it is very doable even for moderate hikers like us.

Loved this hike. Its approx 14km return, starting off from Lake Louise. Its a steady incline the whole way and steep enough to make it a good workout. The tea house at the summit looked cute.I was with a guided group and we had a picnic lunch so didn't eat there.Very pretty spot to eat and relax though. From there you can walk another 1km to see the glacier, which I did and the views are amazing.Highly reccomend this hike.

Got to the parking lot around 6:45 and only a few spots left. Great hike- the farther tee house was a fun place to stop. The closer tea house was packed. Consistently great views!

The trail opens in July but the date varies depending on the weather. I thin you have to weigh up your desire to be there quickly and being able to take the trail in safety. If you are taking a guide - I suggest you ask them.

Hi‐ Anyone have experience hiking this trail with kids ages 5-8? Would you recommend it for kids? They like hiking, but just hesitant about the length of time. Thoughts?
Thanks!

For a 5 year old it may be tough. You can do a lot of stops between. As an earlier reviewer said, you can always turn around and go back. The whole way is spectacular. It is worth a try.

Hello, I'm planning to do this in August (Next week). How can I get here from Banff? Can I take the 8X service and then use the same to come back? And is hiking boots a must? I was planning to bring a pair of Salomon speedcross only. Thanks!
كُتب بتاريخ 6 أغسطس 2019
Hi we drove there so I cannot answer that question but in regards to footwear my husband work hiking boots and I wore regular sneakers. Hiking boots are probably the better option especially if it’s raining but I managed perfectly well in sneakers.

I am visiting Banff in the middle of March and are planning some hikes. What kind of footwear should we bring? Hiking boots, ice cleats, snowshoes?

You can also rent Yak traxs in town if needed. We did the hike with just regular hiking books (not water proof) and were fine. The trail is packed so getting wet is less of an issue. Its the ice that will be the big deal. (freeze/thaw... not your friend) Enjoy the views.

Hi! Visiting Canada for the first time we want to do the hike at the Six glaciers is it a good idea to visit in December??
كُتب بتاريخ 29 نوفمبر 2018
We visited in the Summer and it snowed lightly. Unless extremely prepared and experienced, I would not recommend in December.

Has anyone done this recently? Coming here next week (june 2nd)

We did it last June (early). What is your question?
كُتب بتاريخ 28 مايو 2018
My bud and I plan to do this trail sometime soon (end May) , but I see that the Parks Canada website has this trail listed as “not recommended” due to the avalanche risks past the lake. Has anyone done this trail during this part of the year and has any tips for our plan? We both don’t have experience with avalanches.

The Fairview Lookout is a short alternative in the Lake Louise area if you're looking to avoid avalanche risks near the end of May. If you have a vehicle, the Castle Lookout (about 25 minutes away from Lake Louise in the direction of Banff) is one of the recommended early season hikes since the snow clears faster.

4 active adults want to do this end of June. Is this a loop? Start at Lake Louise and take the Plain of Six to teahouse than coming down do we take Beehive Trail? Just confused on the trail. We would like to make a loop.
Any suggestions?

To make a longer loop on the way back from the Plain of Six Glaciers, take the junction on the left to go to Big Beehive. From there, you continue on to the Lake Agnes tea house (and can even go to Little Beehive if you have the energy.) From the Lake Agnes tea house continue back down to the Lake Louise lakeshore. There is a nice map after hiking for the first 30 minutes at the back of Lake Louise.

We are planning to visit Banff in early July. We have a 10 year-old and 13 year-old daughter. They both are in great physical health and have hiked with us at Bryce and Zion National Parks. Would this hike be too tough for them?
كُتب بتاريخ 18 مايو 2018
How far is it to the tea house. Glacier lookout? Would you know the elevation gain?
كُتب بتاريخ 31 ديسمبر 2017
We hiked to Plain of Six Glaciers tea house in late June. There are two tea houses. Our round trip from the Chateau was 7.58 miles with 1,187 ft elevation gain. Beautiful hike. The sights AND smells were amazing. Had to cross a few sheets of ice. Walking sticks and hiking shoes recommended.
