We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Irving House. We were given a guided tour by the volunteers and their passion, knowledge and enjoyment of the history of the house and family was refreshing. If you enjoy visiting historical houses and learning about family history we would recommend it.

To be fair, I've seen a lot of historical Victorian era houses. Probably too many. I should stop going really. If you haven't then you'd probably enjoy this and you should visit. The staff were attentive and I got a private tour the moment I walked in the door. I learned all about the names of families that lived there and how they used each room. The space was beautiful. But I've seen a lot of historical houses dedicated to people the guides assure me were very important, lots of parlours, cast iron stoves and hair wreaths. I'm at the point where I have to pretend not to know the answers to questions so I can be politely shocked by the explanation for a chamber pot. These houses blend together until you find the ones that stand out with unique storytelling, willingness to explore different themes or creative displays and programs. This one didn't particularly stand out. But it was free and it was raining and now I can say I've been.

Great 40 minute tour of historic house by a great guide who was very knowledgeable for cost of donation. Victorian house with original wall paper and carpeting

Very personalized tour from 'Robin' I would recommend him. He's not a bird, he's a fella!
Lovely bit of history of New Westminister. The first house ever built there.
As original buildings are thin on the ground in Vancouver, this is a must-see!
Step inside the airconditioned atmosphere and while away a very enjoyable hour. The house was built with some style and this is still reflected in the original wallpapers and carpets in some rooms and some furniture and bric-a-brac from the original family's collection.

If you are looking to have an informative tour of a 150+ year old Victorian house, the Irving house & staff will transport you back in time.
Our party consisted of 5 moms finding time to visit in peace.
I have never been excited about high tea overall - its tea & treats. I can do that anywhere. I have been dragged to several high tea establishments that were Gorgeous, but was still just tea & treats.
I like that the food was mostly served to us. The food was basic with 2 options. Unfortunately not a fan of either.
I an Super impressed with the staff that called to confirm and accommodate my serious food allergies. I felt very safe to eat the options they did serve me. I just hate salmon.
The option of orange pekeo and earl grey seemed very simple, but maybe representative of Victorian times. Thankfully Earl Grey is my favourite.
If history is your thing, you may be delighted. Our tea seemed to go by too fast and we felt rushed, but that can happen in great company.

This is one of the best and most interesting old house museums I've seen (and we've been to many). It's a bit off the beaten track, on the hillside in New Westminster, an older suburb of Vancouver (or is it the other way around?) but well worth the trip. Good for family visits.

Irving House is located on Royal Avenue in New Westminster.
This is a Victorian house originally built in 1865 and we were told Irving House is the oldest house structure still standing in the Lower Mainland (Vancouver and surrounding area).
Upon entry, we were greeted by an older gentlemen (volunteer?) and he gave a little history of the Irving family and house. The volunteer then went on to describe the living room and front parlour.
After viewing the front rooms downstairs we went upstairs to view the living quarters and then exited by the servant’s staircase to view the kitchen, library and the tea room on the main floor.
Each of the rooms are filled with period artifacts and furnishings.
If you’re interested in Victorian era history as it relates to the Irving family, it’s worth a 45 - 60 minute visit.
An interesting experience that rates a 3.75 out of 5 - good
Notes & Tips:
• Admission by donation. Suggested donation is $2 per person or $5 for a family
• The volunteer staff was friendly
• Check the museum website for hours and additional information
• Limited free street parking in front of Irving House. There is also parking on the surrounding streets.
• The skytrain station is about a 1.1 kilometers (.7 miles) walk, partly uphill to Irving House.
• Unlike Roedde House, another Victorian era house in Vancouver, there are no information guides in multiple languages describing the room and providing relevant information. As indicated above this was done by the volunteers in Irving House.
• Roedde House is located in “Barclay Heritage Square” bounded by Barclay, Nicola, Haro and Broughton Street. The heritage square consists of old houses and you can do a self guided tour. Be sure to get a pamphlet from the Roedde House Museum.

We were greeted right away when we walked in and it was explained that the gentleman upstairs was doing a tour, that we could join or wonder around and wait for the next tour in 15 minutes. We decided to participate right away as we had not missed much. It was really neat to hear about how the family lived in those days and the way life was lived so simple back then.

A little difficult to get to, and limited parking, but worth the trouble.
Over the years, have visited many old houses with period furniture, but in this case you do not have to travel to Toronto or Montreal. The layout of the furniture to show the different types of rooms (parlour, bedroom, etc) is extremely well done - clearly, someone has spent some serious study time on how to do this properly.
But, the best part has to be the guides, who are not only knowledgeable, but sound like they care.
I wasn't expecting to enjoy this as much as I did. I hope you do too.
