Dingy, decrepit, dilapidated.
This 100+ year old memorial to a Canadian monarch has NOT been properly maintained. This shows disrespect to those that own it - most likely the City of Vancouver in some form or another. Look after your statues properly, or store them until you can! Yet another example (albeit a small one) of how the city ignores and abuses its assets.
Take a moment, when in the vicinity of Georgia and Hornby to go by and see what I mean.

Installed in its current location in 1983, the King Edward VII drinking fountain was originally commissioned by the “Imperial Order of Daughters of the Empire” to sculptor Charles Marega in 1912. If the latter’s name sounds familiar to you, that’s not too surprising because Marega is responsible for a number of notable works in Vancouver and Victoria: The lions on Lions Gate Bridge, the President Harding Memorial in Stanley Park, the Joe Fortes fountain, Mayor Oppenheimer bust, and a number of statues at BC’s Parliament. In short, Marega was no stranger to monumental works and, thus, was an apt choice to commemorate King Edward VII.
I’ve walked by the King Edward Memorial Fountain countless times, sometimes noticing it and other times not. I’d like to say my passivity to the fountain stems largely from knowing “it’s always been there,” but that would simply be a falsity. I think it has more to do with location. As of this writing, the King Edward VII Memorial Fountain is tucked away on the west side of the Vancouver Art Gallery – along Hornby Street. As you amble down the street, you might glance at the fountain but aren’t too likely to stop . . . at least, that was always my experience. And I’ve observed a lot of other people do that, too. Now Hornby – at least the section beside the Art Gallery – is undergoing seemingly endless renovation. This makes observing the Memorial Fountain all the more challenging because it’s surrounded by construction equipment, which makes the site look kind of junky. On the other hand, maybe being surrounded by construction equipment is strangely appropriate because it kind of illustrates contemporary attitudes towards the monarchy and heritage monuments: Tucked away, out of sight so as not to offend anybody for any reason at all.
The King Edward VII Memorial Fountain wasn’t always relegated to the side of ye olde courthouse (current Vancouver Art Gallery). When it was originally unveiled in 1912, it sat prominently in front of the courthouse for all to see and enjoy. At the time, it was even equipped with handsome bronze drinking goblets (similar to the Queen Victoria Fountain in Stanley Park), but those were promptly stolen and never replaced. Come 1966, though, the fountain was put into basement storage until being moved to its current location.
It really is a shame that most of us tend to walk by this fountain without so much as a glance. When you stop to actually look at it, it’s a beautiful piece (if you can ignore the recent vandalism). The concrete base and pillars speak to a high level of expert workmanship; the lion, which used to spout water, is nicely done; the bronze image of King Edward VII has held up well over the last century; and, even though the fountain has been relegated to the side of a building, it still fits in with the architecture. Thus, if you’re walking in the vicinity of the VAG, I’d recommend stopping – even briefly – to observe this fine monument.
PS: The location listed on TripAdvisor is obviously wrong. There is no "Whitechapel Road," nor a "London Hospital."
