‪Vancouver’s Horticultural Jewel‬
يوليو 2021
‪If there’s one thing the pandemic has been good for, it’s forcing us to explore more of our own backyard. Over the last year and a half, I’ve explored more of BC than I ever have at any other point – and it’s been such a rewarding experience. I’ve patronized a lot of the touristy, well-known spots, and just as many lesser-known treasures. To say it’s been an enlightening experience would be something of an understatement.

Queen Elizabeth Park is one such place I’ve managed to patronize during this time. Believe it or not, up until this point, I’d never taken the time to fully explore this wonderful 139 acre park. Sure, I’d stopped by the Bloedel Conservatory a couple of times, but that’s it . . . and given QE Park’s status in this city, it’s kind of surprising and sad on my part.

Established in 1939, Queen Elizabeth Park is ideally situated in that it sits atop the highest point in Vancouver. As a result, the views you are privy to are, bar none, some of the best in the city. Go stand near The Photo Session sculpture (see my earlier review on this site) at dusk and you’ll see what I mean. Its little wonder many a wedding photo gets taken here: The area highlights, in the most compelling way, Vancouver’s modernism and its close relationship to its natural environment.

If visiting, I’d recommend allocating 2 to 3 hours to fully enjoy the park and its amenities:

Bloedel Conservatory: Opened in 1969, the conservatory is a lush tropical paradise playing host to a plethora of birds and unique plant life. I really enjoyed visiting during winter because it allowed me to pretend I was in some tropical paradise while it was freezing outside. Earlier this summer, the conservatory also featured “Uncle Fester,” a rare corpse flower (I really wanted to see this, but the limited ticket sales, due to COVID, prevented me from doing so).

Quarry Gardens: As the name implies, this garden is housed in an old rock quarry and is, I think, the crown jewel of QE Park. The flowers and plants are well-manicured and draw many comparisons with Butchart Gardens in Victoria. It’s easy to get “lost” walking the stone and gravel pathways in this area of the park – worth a visit by itself!

Rose Garden: Established in 1967 to celebrate Canada’s centennial, I admit I found QE Park’s Rose Garden kind of underwhelming. The colour and variety of roses was nice, but the layout seemed a little – I don’t know – “lazy” to me? The odd sunflower jutting out captured my attention more than the roses (sorry, Robert Burns).

Public Artwork: Queen Elizabeth Park is home to a few notable sculptures, including Knife Edge Two Piece by Henry Moore, The Photo Session by J. Seward Johnson, and Love in the Rain by Bruce Voyce. For a detailed account of each, please see my earlier reviews on this site.

After you’ve finished your foray in and around Queen Elizabeth Park, why not stop for a nice lunch or dinner at Seasons in the Park (a place I’d still love to visit)?

All in all, QE Park is definitely a “must visit” when in Vancouver. It has a lot of unique attractions; the scenery is beautiful and reflective of the city; and it’s a fine substitute if you don’t have sufficient time to explore the much larger Stanley Park. Highly recommended!‬

‪Went with out of town friends‬
أغسطس 2021
‪We haven't visited QE Park for 10 years. Two weeks ago we met our out of town friends there. First thing we found out, it cost us $ 3.65 per hour for parking. That shows the city desperately needs financial support. Second thing, I wanted to show them the famous Rose Garden. All we found was a dead silent garden that lost all the glamour, beauty and colour, what a disappointment. One thing is the magnificent harbour view, no matter the weather, sunny, rain or cloudy, it's still there for visitors to enjoy!
Happy Travelling!‬

‪Neglected‬
سبتمبر 2021
‪The park has been noticeably neglected. The Zipline has been removed. It's still a nice park and a must-see when visiting Vancouver.‬

‪Could be looked after better for scenery‬
يوليو 2021
‪We come from another city and make a trip to see this park each year. Disappointed with the care or neglect of the rose garden as over grown with grass and weeds in areas. The park lacks color with flower borders as the catus just does not add to the beauty once this park had. The stream is so small, and areas should be cleaned. For a Vancouver city park you have to pay for parking the grounds could and should look better. Yes heat wave, but expected more artistic borders, flowers, plants as it was years before. (Longbeach). ‬

‪Great view.‬
أغسطس 2020
‪The park is central to Vancouver. Easy to get to by car or bicycle. Fun to visit under the dome. For a high end meal, date night or small gathering try Seasons in the Park restaurant. The view is second to none on a clear day.‬

‪Great flower arrangements, Great views‬
يونيو 2021
‪Ideally located at the highest point in the city. Various activities are available; but I was overawed by the flower gardens and the views. Clearly, a lot of thought went into the design of this old quarry, as can be seen from from the many photographs. But, the views of downtown were and are nonpareil! Great views of the North Shore, the east end, and Downtown. Lots of parking when I was there on a weekday morning, clean washrooms. BUT, if not coming by car, about a 10-15 walk from the nearest Skytrain station at Kind Edward. Uphill.‬

‪A place you must visit‬

‪It is a lark you have to go. There is an amazing view point where you can see Vancouver downtown from the top. You can also see the mountains. There is a paid parking lot and a nice restaurant. ‬
