‪The BC Entertainment Hall of Fame is interesting. It was founded in 1992 to honour those in the Province, and especially the GVA, who’ve made “outstanding” contributions to the entertainment industry. Following the tedious work of establishing such organizations, the StarWalk was created in 1994, with Dal Richards as its inaugural inductee. In the last 27 years, over 200 bronze stars have been added to the StarWalk for individuals who’ve excelled in a variety of categories, including music, film, theatre, TV, radio and production.

The bronze stars, which many have erroneously compared to the Hollywood Walk of Fame, run for 2 blocks along Granville Street. The location, I think, is apt: The StarWalk basically follows Granville’s entertainment district – including running adjacent to the Orpheum and Commodore Ballroom – and thus adds another layer of complexity to the storied neighbourhood. Even though Granville isn’t what it used to be, I still enjoy the heritage vibe and feel one gets walking along this stretch of the street.

Curiously, locals don’t tend to spend a lot of time (if any) observing the bronze stars. I suppose this tendency comes from the belief of “well, it’s always been there.” And I confess to being guilty of this. I’ve walked over these bronze stars countless times and have rarely stopped to read any of them. They’ve just . . . always been there. It’s only now, because of the pandemic, that I’ve taken the time to truly observe and see what – and who – is recognized on this StarWalk.

Indeed, as you walk along BC’s StarWalk, there will be many names you don’t recognize (some might call this our own colonialism), but also a number of which are household names. A few names that immediately jumped out at me: Donna Spencer, Michael Buble, Bryan Adams, Red Robinson and, of course, Michael J. Fox (I was surprised to learn Fox had only been inducted in 2016!). It’s nice to see some of BC’s best and brightest honoured, but I probably wouldn’t go out of my way to visit the StarWalk; instead, add it to a larger itinerary that inevitably involves Granville Street.‬

‪In Granville Street near the Orpheum Theatre, currently 203 bronze plagues are placed in the sidewalk quite similar to the Hollywood Walk of Wame to honor outstanding British Columbian performers, such as Bryan Adams, Michael Buble and Allard de Ridder. The Starwalk was created in 1994 together with a Starwall in the Orpheum theatre. In 2010 the plagues were renewed when Granville street was rejuvenated for the winter Olympics.‬
