Russell Books has been a staple in downtown Victoria ever since their first location opened in 1991. Known for their treasure trove of used and rare books, one could easily spend a couple of hours in here browsing the stacks – it’s a great way to escape the stressful world in which we currently live: Pandemics, unprecedented weather systems, and social unrest. Books offer a momentary respite from all the hurly burly . . . and it’s much needed!
I hadn’t been to Russell Books for a solid 7 years – well before they moved across the street to their current location (2019). While I have fond memories of ambling about the narrow stacks of the former location, I must give many a kudo to this new space: It’s significantly larger (by 6,000 square feet, in fact) and far more accessible with wider aisles, escalator and an elevator. The layout is attractive and makes navigating the busy bookshelves a lot easier.
Besides the impressive selection on offer, I especially enjoyed looking at Russell Books’ special collection of old books on their main floor. Seeing a book published in 1617 on display was pretty crazy! Even if I had the funds to purchase such a book, I’d probably be scared to open it!
Anyway, while we might lament the narrow and crowded stacks of old, the “new” Russell Books remains as impressive as ever. With the greatly expanded space, there’s ample room for even more books, making this independent bookstore a “must visit” for any bibliophile!

One of our favorite things to do after going out for dinner is visiting a bookstore. We ate at Fishhook nearby and came here afterwards. It is an attractive store with two floors and a large collection. You could easily spend an hour plus here.

I've been going to Russell Books for years. For a long time, Russell Books was an oasis for me, and perusing the packed shelves, looking through the stacks on the floor, meandering down the endless aisles of wooden shelving...all of it was a joy. Trade value given for used books about a decade ago or so was pretty fair in my view, and it was fun to trade with the store. I miss those days.
Unfortunately, over time (as with all things, really), Russell Books changed. In my view, and I say it with a heavy heart, it has lost much of its heart and its quaint appeal. The new store, while impressive on many counts, still ends up feeling more like a Chapters than the wonderful maze of literary treasures it used to be. Though the store itself is larger, the selection seems to have gone down; presumably, this probably has something to do with the endlessly omnipresent nature of the effects of the Covid pandemic, and its subsequent effects on book trading, etc. That said, many of the books seem to be simply overstock rather than old treasures, and the chance of coming across a really unique copy of a book seems less and less.
When trading was still allowed, trade value had seemingly gone down...way, way down. So much so, in fact, that I stopped trading in altogether, by and large.
Regardless, I really feel disheartened over the place. It used to be a treasure trove, a place to surprise oneself by finding hidden gems, a place where one could really dig in their search for a title. Now, it feels so Chapters-like that little differentiates it for me anymore from a regular bookstore (though, thankfully, it is not like Indigo!!).
Still, Russell Books is an amazing store to visit if you love books, and it is (as far as I know) one of the largest of its type. It's a place for book lovers, through and through. It just seems to have lost some of its heart and its classical appeal. Perhaps this is simply indicative of the times, perhaps its just a simple case of expansion and progress. That said, I'll always miss Russell Books the way it used to be. Nothing could compare to it, and nothing (not even the new store as it is now) will probably ever compare to it.

Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. We really value input from our community and that is why we worked so hard to find a space that is larger and provides accessibility for everyone. Although many of us miss the quaint narrow aisles, stacks of books lining the floors, the creaky staircases, and books piled to the ceilings, we got complaints every single day about the old store from customers and staff alike. We are trying to maintain the same values and traditions that Russell Books was built on 60 years ago by my Grandfather and we are working hard on improving every aspect of our business to help it stay viable for the next 60 years and beyond. We hope you will visit us again once the pandemic is over and we have all of our hardworking staff back with us and are able to present you with everything you need to give us a five star review once again. Our new store is bright and airy and clean and almost twice the size of the old store. It allows the elderly and those in a wheelchair or in a baby carriage access to all of it thanks to the elevator and escalators. It might surprise you to know every section has either the same or greater representation in our new location. We have widened the aisles and now have a 10,000 sq foot warehouse nearby keeping our extra stock off the floor and easily findable thanks to our completely computerised inventory.

A local said Russell Books was his favourite book store in Victoria. As lover of books, my travelling companion and I had plans to go to Munro's (which we did) but we also made sure to visit here. It didn't disappoint! Russell Books have a nice collection of collectables and used books, as well as new ones. They're all shelved together, so there's a great chance the book you find might well be used and reasonably priced (which is what happened to both of us on our visit). We spent a lovely amount of time browsing and came away with some great finds - and collectables. Highly recommend coming here and it's become top of our list for books in Victoria.

This is a great find in Victoria. During our one week visit to Victoria we visited this store twice and bought five books in total, I wish i could buy more. I think the books are used hence the price but they are pretty new condition. The books have reviews at the back as to whether it was highly rated or an average read.
The selection was awesome and the staffs knowledgable. The only draw back is most books were fairly “old”, not in the condition but the published dates so if you are looking for latest or more up to date books then may not be such a great choice.
Plan to visit again.

Hi there! Thank you for the kind review! The listing on the sticker with, for example, "very good" is referring to the condition of our used books and is not a review of the books themselves. The variety, quality and price of books available at this store is incredible! The new location (across the street from the former location) provides superior access compared to the previous location.

Been going to Russell's for years and always enjoyed its quirky fractured character (i.e., different floors, different doors, challenging stacks). Just checked out their new store and it's so impressive and spacious, plus barrier-free. Great staff, as always.

My daughter and I found this book store while vacationing. We love books! This store has the best price and best selection of vintage and rare books that I have ever seen. So much to see! We could easily have spent several hours here. They also have new books. Extremely helpful staff. I want to visit Victoria again just to go to Russell Books Store again!

I am wondering is there any signage posted at Russell's cashier check out counter that says - " All sales final "? I can understand Russell Books is an outlet for used books and any return for refund doesn't make business sense.
We purchased from them 3 new 2020 calenders and they were factory wrapped and brand new. Subsequently, we found the same calenders at $6 cheaper each down the block! We phoned Russell Book to inquire about their return policy, only to found out "all sales are finally", refund is not allowed at Russell.
My question is: did we miss their posted sign? If there isn't one, then, should they put one up??
