Call ahead to make sure there will be a retired member of the police to give a guided tour. The hours may be varied week to week. The price is free, and they take pride in their artifacts and displays. Try on the buffalo coat, lock someone up in the cell, and sit in the motorcycle side car for some unique photo ops. A must see if wandering downtown Peg-city. Some very cool exhibits.

Located at police headquarters, this museum is mostly the works of one man. Knowing this its impressive how big the collection is. A look back at the beginnings of law enforcement of the city and area. Kids will love all the things here. The volunteers know their facts as they once were on the force. And its free to get in. But please donate to the museum to keep it going. For all that's here its worth a donation.

Spent just over an hour there with three kids under eight and one teen. We were there at 10 am when they opened and it was getting busy by 11 because of spring break.
The exhibits span the early history of the WPD and the other local PDs (which were eventually amalgamated into one), through to the turn of the century.
Yes they had a hovercraft long before the police helicopter.
The kids enjoyed stints as a motorcycle cop and a prisoner in a working jail cell. They were allowed in a sidecar and inside the lockup. The staff were careful to ask if the 'inmates' were ok if the cell door could be closed before doing so. Unfortunately they were all later released on bail.
Without kids you could easily spend a couple of hours there. Don't be afraid to ask questions, there was always a volunteer around who was genuinely anxious to supply an answer.
Meter parking outside is good for 2 hours and it is easily accessible by bus.

This museum is in the new(ish) Winnipeg Police Head Quarters building 245 Smith St. Entrance is corner of Smith and Graham.
Front of HQ has a unique display that includes vehicle and boat etc. Inside museum entrance I'd right off front doors. There are volunteers at the entrance directing you the way.
This is a step back in time. Old bomb truck, a jail cell and lots and lots of equipment. Some reading but a great experience. Museum is run by volunteers who really seem to care and will have the time to answer questions...

If you are at all interested in Winnipeg History, especially law enforcement history, the Winnipeg Police Museum is a must see. Artifacts back to the 1800's are on display with guided tours. Originally divided into 13 smaller cities, each having its own police department, they ammlgimated in 1974, into metro Winnipeg. Uniforms, equipment, firearms, vehicles and documents tell the history of the department's. A must see for law enforcement and history buffs.

Had to wait downtown Winnipeg for several hours and came upon the Winnipeg Police Museum.....who knew there was one??? Was greeted by the volunteers and got a private tour. Wow, the history of Winnipeg on display with many interesting newspaper articles, bomb squad vehicle and even a hovercraft. One of the volunteers opened the special exhibit and explained the call boxes and many other interesting facts. Well worth ones time and no admission fee, just a contribution. Very well done!

The museum is divided into areas. One area deals with transportation and includes paddy wagons and also displays of the horse and cycling patrols. There is also a squad car individuals can sit in. There is an interactive display about how dispatch worked.
Area two is about how policing developed in Winnipeg starting with the pre Winnipeg incorporation period . It showcases each of the districts in Winnipeg and how they all had their own police force , prior to amalgamation of Greater Winnipeg.
Retired police force workers, man the museum and are very engaging and thoughtful in answering questions. They will also help you research relatives who served on the force.

I see I'm in the wrong place. Do you have an email address for the Police Museum?
Don’t see email, but Mailing address for the Winnipeg Police Museum and Historical Society:

Hi, I hope you can help me. My grandfather, Donald Sinclair, was one of the founding members of the Winnipeg Police Pipe Band. He had an actual photo of the band, that I believe is in your book, which I own, but his son donated the picture to you. All I have is a photocopy of it, and I would like to get a decent copy. Is there anyway you can help here?

Hi Sandra, I myself can't help you, but I know who can. You can email the museum. Trip Advisor won't let me include the email address, but if you Google it, you should be able to find the email address..
Or, stop by the museum in the new Winnipeg Police Headquarters on Graham and ask for Randy or Jack. If the photo is there, and they can find it, they should be able to make you a good copy...
Hope this helps...
Mike
