We expected much more seacoast views but were disappointed at the south and the west sides of the loop!
The north and east parts are FANTASTIC. We will do them again as they were that nice.
The south part had construction and the road ripped up making a very rough and dirty drive with much dust. The entire south end is flat and there is nothing to see! starting north again on the west side was interesting for the first few kilometres then inland to see nothing much! What a waste of time and gas!

Driving from Trinity to Trepassey. The Western part of the loop is God awful. The roads are really really bad. There are a few places to visit but IMO not worth the drive. The Eastern part is better. I cannot believe how poorly maintained the roads are.

Some of the road is in rough shape, but the scenery is unique. Worth the drive to go to St. Vincent's and whale watch on the beach.

We did the Irish Loop while visiting St. John's. It's a really beautiful drive, however, the pot holes are kinda crazy! We were so glad to have been driving a rental vehicle actually. Another issue we had was that all the restaurants along the way were closed for some reason. Weird for a summer day along a pretty famous route. Needless to say, we found a gas station and picked up some chips and drinks and enjoyed the scenery.

We drove the Irish loop in early September and although there are a few scenic spots I would do the Discovery Trail in the Bonavista area instead. I was surprised how barren and flat the south end is. The drive as far as Ferryland is nice but I would turn around at that point if I had to do it again

We drove the whole Irish Loop, which was pretty easy because we were out of season (October) so many things were closed. It was still beautiful and lots of interesting places to stop in and see. We didn’t do the mistaken point hike, which I would definitely do next time. One note, being out of season there weren’t any restaurants open for lunch, so we had to grab food in the convenience stores. So if you are later in the season pack a lunch.

We only completed a portion of the Irish Loop (from St. John’s to Ferryland and back), but I would have liked to complete the whole loop! If you are accustomed to two-lane traffic or come from a rural area were you have to navigate gravel or uneven road surfaces, you will be fine! The drive to Ferryland was easy and smooth-going. We did the 1.4 km La Manche hike (suspension bridge and abandoned town) which is beautiful, and also stopped for photo-ops in various towns along the way. Our final destination was Ferryland’s Lighthouse Picnic, which was worth booking ahead! Even though we only had five days in Newfoundland, it was worth leaving the city to experience the charm of other communities and enjoy nature!!!

We squeezed in a drive around the whole Irish Loop during our stay in Newfoundland. While it was interesting to see how different the terrain and vegetation were on different parts of the Avalon Peninsula, we were disappointed with the northern and western parts of the loop, as they were almost entirely inland, with no views of the seacoast. The southern part had only about 30% that wasn't inland. The eastern part was much nicer, especially the part from Bay Bulls to Ferryland, and I would recommend doing that part and skipping the rest.

The Irish loop is something to behold. It allows you to see parts of the island you have never seen before. There are sections along this that are as flat as the prairies. Great little villages are sprinkled along the loop as well.

We travelled the Irish Loop twice on our trip. We loved the down to earth hospitality. Delicious local food, very stop had a different fish chowder! We went whale watching 3 times and saw whales every tour. Beautiful weather with some fog on two days.

We are planning a trip to Newfoundland in mid to late April. I know it is considered off season and a lot of things are closed. We love scenery and are comfortable with moderate and mild hiking. There will be 4 of us ranging from 25 to 55. Looking for budget friendly recommendations for places to stay, eat and visit. Our son is a student in St. John's and this is his school break, he hasn't seen much other than campus area.

It's a pretty easy drive - but get a map of the area. It's not signposted as 'the irish loop'; it's simply a road that goes around the peninsula where many irish people settled. Take some snacks, drinks in the car as there are some stretches where there's no stores. Keep your tank full - there are sections that there weren't many gas station. That's what I remember from our trip this August. I wrote a review on it - hope it helps. Enjoy your trip!
