quietly nestled into a small part of Churchill Park lies the Friends of the Aviary in Hamilton. although not a huge facility the first thing I noticed is how dedicated the staff is to their birds. It doesn't take long to cover the whole place so we took our time and tried to have a chat with many of the lovely birds with some responding. you see pictures of these animals but rarely come this close so the colours were very impressive. I will be back but next time in the summer so we can get a better look at the surrounding grounds. highly recommended.

It is a hidden treasure in the urban land of Hamilton. It was so warm to see volunteers working tirelessly to to keep it going.

My family and I stopped by on Sunday during their weekly open house. It's open every Sunday from 1-4 and free admission! It's located in a really nice spot and there are walking trails nearby too. The birds were beautiful and you can tell the volunteers really care and know what they are talking about.

I've read negative reviews of the Aviary in West Hamilton that suggest the birds aren't cared for properly. I am a bird lover and I can say with authority that these birds are happy and well cared for. The single bird who appears to have plucked his feathers, suffered from an infection---not neglect.
This is a great place for young families. There are many birds who talk and act silly which is great for little ones. There is a friendly bird who often is free to pet and watch at close range. Outside, there are chickens, ducks and peacocks!
The facility is older, but the Aviary operates on donations and public funding, so if you feel the facility isn't up to standard, please don't hesitate to drop a few dollars in their donation box.

The discoveries in the City of Hamilton never cease to amaze me. I found The Friends of the Aviary one afternoon last year while hiking the Cootes Paradise trails. This was very much to my delight for I am a bird enthusiast. Over the past year I have been a regular visitor during the Sunday open house, which is 1 to 4 pm. In this time I have learned so much about the facility, property, & the birds from the dedicated volunteers that keep this gem going. I was reading through some of the comments both good and bad, which have been posted on trip advisor. My personal thoughts, is there is a lot of misunderstanding.
So based on what I have learned from repeated visits, I would like to share what I have learned. The property has a rural community feel with the aviary and community garden plots. The property is shared by the City of Hamilton & The Royal Botanical Gardens. One person mentioned parking fees, well the parking lot is operated by the RBG. The aviary itself is a non-profit organization depending on donations and is partially funded by the City of Hamilton. Also street parking is free.
Yes the facility is showing age, but volunteers are working hard with what they have and limited funding to make continual improvement and the well-being of the birds housed there. What most may not know if they haven’t asked, is these birds are fed a well-balanced diet of fresh organic produce and dry food on a daily basis. They also receive good vet care when required. They also receive a spritz bath, and have their dodos cleaned up. And the birds get plenty of play time and social interaction with volunteers. Some of the birds are brought out from time to time during public visits when their chosen handlers are available. They are otherwise in their cages at this time, for they can be unpredictable. Which can be a liability with accidental bite. Not to mention signs clearly ask to keep fingers out of the cages.
One person mentioned they wanted to see a greater variety of birds, I have asked the same question. I was told at this time there is not enough space to expand. That’s unfortunate. Another said they couldn’t see birds outside, well they go in and out at their will during the warm months. The stand-alone outdoor flights are only used on occasion. Then there was the person who mentioned the chewed up wood, that’s what parrots and their kin do. In the wild they chew cavities into trees for nesting.
The Friends of The Aviary truly is a gem in our fine city. I support and wish it the best. I look forward to watching it grow. I may even volunteer some of my time in the near future to help. Until then, I will continue my weekly Sunday visits. And a special thanks to the volunteers.

The visit to the aviary was very upsetting. I have rescued many parrots and have done a lot of research into their care and well-being and thought that a place like this would have as well. Parrots are very intelligent and need many different types of toys to keep them entertained. Without them they can get depressed and start plucking which it seems a few of the birds do. The lack of perch choices in the cages was alarming as they need different types of perches to keep their feet healthy. Cleanliness is an issue as well. I hope with more donations and funding they can contribute more to the well-being of those birds. It seems like the volunteers really love the birds but may need more education into their care.

I found the staff both knowledgeable and attractive. I hate going somewhere that is staffed with ugly people

We discovered this place almost by accident and how lucky we feel! This is a great place to take the family if you are looking for a free, fun, beautiful, and educational afternoon. It is free, so don't expect it to be polished and glossy like the Toronto Zoo or the African Lion Safari. But, there was a great variety of birds to see, inside and outside, and volunteers were full of knowledge and ready to share. It wasn't busy at all, and so there was opportunity for interaction with the birds. And, the best part was when one of the birds unexpectedly talked back to us! The surrounding area is full of beautiful trails too if you want to spend a whole afternoon there.

Came across the Aviary by chance and did not go in since we had our dog with us. I later thought that I should have gone inside without my husband just to see if the inside was as run down as the outside. I actually felt sorry for the few birds that were in the cages outside. The building seemed neglected and the cages were boring. The birds had no greenery or toys to amuse themselves just a perch hanging from the top and I later could not remember if they even had a water dish. The birds seemed happy enough, talking to us and climbing on the cage to get close. The park itself has a nice wildflower area where we saw lots of butterflies and finches and there is a walking trail that we only walked in a short distance since we were limited on time. There is a charge for parking.
